How you’ll learn You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials, on and off site laboratory and site work and visits to companies. You’ll be assessed through workshop laboratories, surveying field work, groupwork and individual assignments. Some traditional exams maybe involved for design tests.

As a graduate you'll have the knowledge and skills to start your career, and you'll have the academic base for Incorporated Engineer status. An Incorporated Civil Engineer is a person with an accredited Bachelor Degree and experience who can maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. The qualification is essential to be a practising engineer and lead a team in a professional organisation.

Duration: 3 years full time
This degree is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). This will lead to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (MCIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (MIHE) following a period of relevant experience and professional review.

You'll develop a thorough understanding of the process of civil engineering technical design and management. You'll be introduced to key skills in structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials.

Entry requirements: Academic – 220 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 180 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

You’ll be based at Markeaton street, where you’ll use the latest software including AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Project, and Cato CADMeasure. We also regularly have experts from industry as guest lecturers and we’ve got links with renowned companies so you’ll be able to work on live projects and have excellent work placement opportunities.

You can continue your professional development and further study in the discipline of civil engineering by taking our MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Management course. If you don't have the appropriate qualifications to start this course, you can apply to study the Technology Foundation Programme for a year first.
Diploma in Professional Practice (optional) Between the second and third years, we encourage students to take an optional work placement year in industry, which will give you the additional qualification – the Diploma in Professional Practice. You’ll take: ▪ Applied Professional Practice ▪ Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice. Stage three You’ll choose from: ▪ Surveying 3 ▪ Advanced Infrastructure Design.
