About the course Computer science is the theoretical field that underpins all software development. Knowledge of computer science is a prerequisite for employability and success as a computer programmer of any kind, but is particularly applicable to the breadth and complexity of computer games development. This course has a strong emphasis on computer science and the practical programming skills needed for games development. Teaching and learning You will learn by using cutting-edge software development tools in our industry standard labs. The course is taught in a studio style environment by experienced computer scientists and ex-industry professionals. You will also spend your third year in an industry placement, which is great opportunity and really sets you apart from the competition when you graduate. The BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming course is designed to give you both the theoretical grounding and practical skills you will need to develop computer games. The solid computing and software engineering focus of the programme ensures that employability prospects for our graduates are excellent across all software development roles within the computing industry.

You will learn how to use programming languages currently used in the games industry such as C# and C++. This allows our students to develop on a variety of modern systems, with students currently developing games on Xbox 360, Android, iPhone and Windows. Additional information The University of Derby is an official academic partner of Epic and the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). You will learn to develop with world-class toolsets such as Unreal Engine 3.

Game Behaviour

Students can become members of the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance allowing them to use Microsoft products at home. Your career You will find there are a wide range of opportunities for skilled games programmers, from small start-up companies to major multinational organisations. The course will equip you for a variety of roles in the games industry. Whilst this programme is geared towards careers in the games industry, the knowledge and training you will receive will prepare you for almost any future career or further education involving software development. Some of our recent graduates are now working at companies such as Electronic Arts, Microsoft and Codemasters in a variety of different positions, ranging from Software Engineers to Lead Programmers.
