Why choose this course?
Your career
Additional information
You can combine this course with a wide range of other subjects allowing you to keep your options open; study what you’re most interested in and give yourself a range of career avenues. You can get real opportunities to put your skills into practice through work placements or community projects. We've also built a fantastic dance studio to ensure you receive the best experience and environment in which to practise your skills.
You could work in community dance practice; become an artist; work within arts organisations; take further training to teach in primary or secondary education, or in private dance schools; or work with people generally. Some graduates are now working as community dance artists, arts administrators; running their own dance organisations or undertaking further training. You could also study at masters level, for example our MA Dance Movement Psychotherapy, or choose to develop the second subject in your joint honours degree, giving you a range of career choices.
A joint honours degree is the perfect choice for you if you want to study more than one subject. You can give yourself an obvious career path by combining this with one or two other subjects such as Sport and Exercise Studies, Psychology or Theatre Studies for example, or you could even create a less familiar combination according to personal interests.
About the course If you enjoy dance and movement, and want to share your passion, then this is the course for you. You’ll develop an understanding of the body, dance and movement, and the creative application of your art form in working with people in various settings. You’ll build skills in choreography and improvisation, firstly by working individually, then in small groups, and you’ll give a public performance in stage three, which is essential to your learning.
The lecturers have really encouraged me as a dancer and have given me the knowledge and confidence to take my dancing further after finishing my degree.
How you’ll learn As well as personal development you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in lots of community work through placements and project management. We have strong links with Déda in Derby city centre, which is the only dedicated dance house in the East Midlands, where there are opportunities to get involved in technique classes and dance development activity.
What you’ll cover You’ll be studying an innovative course, with links to schools, societies, health and social organisations and charities. This means you’ll have access to a range of placement opportunities. You’ll explore different cultural approaches to dance and movement, including eastern and western approaches, and the impact of gender, society and disability. You’ll also cover the social aspect of dance and how it can bring people together and promote inclusion. You can study this course as either a major, joint or minor subject, which will determine how many modules you’ll choose at each stage.
