Early Childhood Studies (Joint Honours) Where you will study: Derby Campus – Kedleston Road site. Entry requirements: Academic – 220-300 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 200-240 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification. Language – A qualification such as IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all areas) or TOEFL – 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based). About the course You’ll develop your understanding of early childhood from birth to eight years old, discovering how children develop, learn and think. You'll explore the importance of identifying and meeting children's needs and consider the challenges and opportunities in children's services, looking at childhood from a range of perspectives. We'll encourage you to use your own experiences in early years to enhance your knowledge and develop your understanding of early childhood.
How you’ll learn You'll be taught through lectures, seminar activities and tutorials in order to support you through your assessments. You'll take part in group work which provides a good opportunity for discussion and interaction. You’ll be assessed through essays, reports, posters, presentations, case studies, online tests and independent research. You won't have to take any exams.
Your career You’ll gain the skills and approaches you’ll need to work with young children in early years’ settings. You could work in the private, voluntary or independent sector, or join a graduate employment scheme. If you want to teach, you can apply to study either our PGCE Primary or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills) when you graduate. Some students also choose to do further training in social work, nursing or occupational therapy. You could also progress onto our Early Years Professional Status qualification which will enable you to lead practice.

What you’ll cover
To provide you with an insight into working in the early years sector, you'll have the opportunity to organise appropriate work experience through consultation with a study advisor. You’ll also have the opportunity to go on fascinating educational visits such as the Museum of Childhood, Think Tank Science Museum, and Eureka! The National Children’s Museum. You'll be taught by lecturers from backgrounds including early years, primary teaching, social work, nursery management, health visiting, social sciences, law and ICT, so you'll gain a wide range of knowledge and expertise.
At each stage of the course you'll be able to choose from a range of different modules to tailor your degree to suit your own interests. There is an emphasis on the development of the transferable skills that you'll need for successful employment, such as teamwork, reflection and the ability to use research. You can study this course as either a minor or joint subject, which will determine how many modules you’ll choose at each stage.
