About the course In electrical engineering, we apply the fact that electricity can be used to transport and deliver energy. Electrical engineering deals with the study of motors and generators and their control, power transmission and distribution systems,

The programme is taught through a mix of lectures, tutorials, and laboratory work. The timetable contains around 16 hours of contact with staff a week, with around the same amount of time as "directed study". All modules are supported through UDo, the University of Derby online, so you have access to essential support materials at any time of the day or night.

In electronic engineering, we apply electricity to carry, process and store information. Electronics depends heavily on semiconductor technology, which has led to the invention of the famous microchip. Both electrical and electronic engineering depend on the same fundamental scientific laws, but diverge widely beyond these basics.

If you don’t have appropriate qualifications to start this course straight away, you can study the Technology Foundation Programme first.
Stage two You’ll choose from: ▪ Computer Systems and Software Engineering ▪ Control and Instrumentation ▪ Electronic Communications Technology
Between the second and third year you will have the option of developing your skills and knowledge in industry by completing an optional work placement. On completion of two modules, you’ll be awarded the Diploma in Professional Practice. This course is one of a suite of courses offered by the Electronics and Sound subject group. Since the others are closely related to this one, you’ll benefit from close links and collaborations with other students studying multimedia, music production or live event technology. This will provide you with a challenging, stimulating and creative learning environment.
