Why choose this course? This is a hands on practical course, accredited by the Forensic Science Society and endorsed by Forensic Skillsmark. You’ll use our excellent forensics facilities and receive fire investigation training, which is unique to Derby, but vital in forensics. In the 2012 National Student Survey, 93% of our students were satisfied overall with this course.

Your career You could work within the criminal justice system, in local constabularies, the forensic science sector or for Rolls Royce, ESG Scientifics, LGC Forensics and The Health and Safety Laboratory, for example. You could also be employed by law firms, private forensic laboratories or insurance companies, and even go on to teach after completing postgraduate training. We’ll teach you to be analytical and you’ll learn organic chemistry and molecular biology, so you’ll have the skills for further education including qualifications in medicine or a masters degree.

You’ll use our crime scene house, which we share with Derbyshire Constabulary, a car donated by Toyota to evaluate crime scenes and a mock courtroom to give you realistic training experiences. You’ll learn through lectures, practical sessions, fieldtrips, crime scene training and your own study. You’ll be taught by experienced forensic scientists and practising professionals. We also have links with Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

AUTUMN

You’ll cover key forensic practices such as crime scene investigations, human tissue analysis and fingerprint analysis. You’ll learn about blood pattern analysis, firearms and fire investigation and how entomology and tissue decay can help the forensic scientist. You’ll follow the process from crime scene analysis and recovery to presentation of evidence in the courtroom.

STAGE THREE

Entry requirements: Academic – 260 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 220 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

You’ll analyse samples in our specialist labs and we also hold Home Office licenses allowing you to work with class ‘A’ controlled drugs and our firearms collection. This provides you with a realistic learning experience and fully prepares you for your career in forensic science. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit a post mortem.

Depending on how many optional modules you can take at each stage of the course, you’ll choose from the following:

What you’ll cover Between stage two and three, you can apply to work in industry to give you an opportunity to use your theoretical and practical skills. Placements can be during your summer break, three to four months, or up to a whole year. We have a range of optional modules allowing you to tailor your degree to your own interests and career aspirations. You’ll also keep a continuous personal development portfolio, helping you to prepare for life after university.
