Why choose this course? This course is accredited by the Forensic Science Society, and endorsed by Forensic Skillsmark. We have links with Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, giving you opportunities to gain work experience to enhance your employability. In the 2012 National Student Survey, 91% of our students were satisfied overall with this course.
Your career You could work within the criminal justice system, in local constabularies, various forensic service providers, HM Prison Service or the Police Force, for example. You could also be employed by pharmaceutical companies, law firms, private forensic laboratories or insurance companies. Some graduates even go on to teach after completing relevant postgraduate training. We’ll teach you to be analytical and you’ll learn organic chemistry and molecular biology, so you’ll have the skills for further study, including qualifications in medicine or a masters degree.

We’ve got specialist facilities including a crime scene house, which we share with Derbyshire Constabulary, a car donated by Toyota, and a mock courtroom to give you realistic training experiences. We’ll teach you through lectures, practical sessions, fieldtrips, crime scene training, your own study, continuous assessments and exams. You’ll be taught by experienced forensic scientists and specialists in criminology, as well as practicing lawyers, barristers and judges.

This course is for you if you’re interested in topics such as the causes of criminal behaviour, whether criminals are born or made and the legal aspects of forensic science, including the court process and the roles of the judge, jury and witnesses. You’ll practice the process of collecting and examining forensic evidence and presenting your evidence in court.

Entry requirements: Academic – 260 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 220 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

You’ll analyse samples in our specialist labs and we also hold Home Office licenses allowing you to work with class A controlled drugs and our firearms collection. This is to provide you with a realistic learning experience and fully prepares you for your career in forensic science. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit a post mortem.

What you’ll cover Between stage two and three, you can apply to work in industry which will give you an opportunity to use your theoretical and practical skills. Placements can be during your summer break, three to four months, or up to a whole year. We have a wide range of optional modules to allow you to tailor your degree to your own interests and career aspirations. You’ll also keep a continuous personal development portfolio, helping you to prepare for life after university.
