Teaching and learning We’ll teach you through lectures, practical sessions, field trips, crime scene training and you will also need to conduct your own study. You will be taught by experienced forensic scientists and specialists in criminology, as well as practising lawyers, barristers and judges. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including continuous assessment from coursework, practical sessions, oral presentations, as an expert witness in the witness box and examinations. Between stage two and three, you can apply to work in industry which will give you an opportunity to use your theoretical and practical skills. Placements can be during your summer

About the course This course is for you if you’re interested in topics such as the causes of criminal behaviour, miscarriages of justice and the legal aspects of forensic science. This includes the court process and the roles of the judge, jury and witnesses. You will practise the process of collecting and examining forensic evidence and presenting your evidence in court. We’ve got specialist facilities including a crime scene house, which we share with Derbyshire Constabulary, a car donated by Toyota, and a mock courtroom to give you realistic training experiences.

Additional information You will analyse samples in our specialist labs and we also hold Home Office licenses allowing you to work with class A controlled drugs and our firearms collection. This is to provide you with a realistic learning experience and fully prepares you for your career in forensic science. You will also have the opportunity to visit a post-mortem. Your career You could work within the criminal justice system, in local constabularies, various forensic service providers, HM Prison Service or the Police Force, for example. You could also be employed by pharmaceutical companies, law firms, private forensic laboratories or insurance companies. Some graduates even go on to teach after completing relevant postgraduate training. We’ll teach you to be analytical and you will learn a broad range of scientific knowledge, so you will have the skills for further study, including qualifications in medicine or a masters degree.
