Teaching and learning You’ll learn through lectures, practical sessions, seminars and crime scene training. We hold Home Office licenses which will allow you to work with class ‘A’ controlled drugs and our firearms collection to provide a realistic forensics training environment for you. You’ll also have the opportunity to observe a post mortem. You’ll be taught by experienced forensic scientists, psychologists and practising professionals who will provide you with the latest information on criminal psychology and forensic practice. We also have strong links with Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service.

About the course You’ll learn about key psychological theories and principles and take a detailed look at criminal psychology. You’ll cover key forensic practices such as crime scene investigations, human tissue analysis and fingerprint analysis. You’ll be guided through the process from crime scene analysis and recovery to presentation of evidence in the courtroom using our dedicated crime scene house, vehicle and mock courtroom facilities.

This is a hands-on, practical course that balances an understanding of crime scene investigation with an insight into the criminal mind and behaviour. You’ll use our excellent forensic and psychology facilities, which include forensic laboratories, a crime scene house and psychological observation suites. In the 2013 National Student Survey, 91% of our students were satisfied with the teaching on our forensic science courses.

Placements can be during your summer break, three to four months, or up to a whole year. We have a range of optional modules allowing you to
tailor your degree to your own interests and career aspirations. You’ll also keep a continuous personal development portfolio, helping you to prepare for life after university. Your career Combining an in-depth knowledge of forensic science with an understanding of core psychological principles opens up a variety of career opportunities for you. You could work within the criminal justice system including the probation service, in local constabularies, the forensic science sector or for companies such as Rolls-Royce, ESG Scientifics, LGC Forensics and AstraZeneca, for example. You could also be employed by law firms, private forensic laboratories or insurance companies. You’ll have the skills for further education in the areas of medicine or psychology amongst others.
