About the course This course gives you a sound basis in engineering principles and practical experience. You will specialise in modules such as engineering design and modelling and engineering management. All of these subjects are essential to a modern mechanical engineer. You will also take an individual project module to extend your research and development skills and to give you real experience solving an engineering problem in industry. It’s an excellent way for prospective employers to assess your skills for your first job or for career development.

Duration and mode of study: 3 years full time or 4 years with the Technology Foundation Programme.
It will prepare you to become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) within the engineering industry, so you will be ready for careers in mechanical engineering design, motorsport or automotive design and in applications of advanced materials.

Diploma in Professional Practice (optional) You will take: Applied Professional Practice Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice. Stage Three You will choose from: Ethics, Environment and Innovation Computational Fluid Dynamics Advanced Powertrain Engineering. Additional information Between the second and third year you will have the option of developing your skills and
knowledge in industry by completing an optional work placement for a year. On completion of two modules, you will be awarded the Diploma in Professional Practice. If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications to start this course straight away, you can apply to study the Technology Foundation Programme first. Your career Derby is a city of Technology, with world famous companies including Rolls Royce, Bombardier and Toyota on the doorstep. It’s also the highest-earning city outside the South-East so your employment prospects are excellent. You could also go on to take our MSc Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
