We've got a fantastic range of music making facilities at our Markeaton Street site, including new recording studios, rehearsal space, and music technology labs. There's a vibrant music scene at Derby, so you'll have the chance to work with enthusiastic musicians.

You’ll develop production and technical skills in our state of the art facilities which will prepare you for work in a range of industries, including sound design for computer games.

How you’ll learn

Our students have gone on to gain employment as sound recordists, music producers, audio engineers, broadcasters, musicians, composers, film makers and sound designers, which all use music technology in some form or other.

AUTUMN

Language – A qualification such as IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in all areas) or TOEFL – 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based). See our website for other accepted qualifications or phone us: +44 (0)1332 591698.

You'll gain an excellent understanding of the music industry and recording studios, and learn about the technology of the studio, and playback systems. During this course you’ll also explore the process of sound recording and production, and complete a portfolio of commercial recordings. The course will develop your awareness of the commercial environment, and how best to promote your music.

STAGE THREE

Entry requirements: Academic – 260 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 220 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

Options

If you want to gain work experience, you can take an optional industrial placement between stages two and three during which you'll study an additional qualification, the Diploma in Professional Practice.

Stage two You’ll choose two modules from: ▪ Sound System Engineering ▪ Professional Practice ▪ Acoustics ▪ Video/Audio Production. Diploma in Professional Practice (Optional) You’ll take: ▪ Applied Professional Practice ▪ Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice. Stage three You’ll choose two modules from: ▪ Studio Post-Production ▪ Multichannel Sound and Auditory Perception ▪ Live Performance.

If you don't have the appropriate qualifications to start this degree, you can apply to study the Technology Foundation Programme for a year first. We have brand new recording studios, equipped with the latest HDX Protools systems, lots of great instruments and a Classic 48 channel Neve recording console. Every year we stage our graduate Degree Show. This creative festival provides you with the opportunity to showcase your achievements as well as making vital industry contacts, and it’s a really high profile event in the city’s arts calendar.
