You'll have a mixture of lectures, tutorials, group work and self-directed study. Much of your time will be spent in the studio, workshop or CAD facilities. Learning strategies include practical studio-based project work with formal lectures, seminars and debates to embed underpinning theoretical knowledge. We demonstrate relevance of the curriculum to the product design profession through industry learning opportunities, live project work, competitions, teamwork, cultural field study visits and visiting speakers.

This course has its emphasis on design for mass production and design engineering. It's ideal if you're a creative thinker with a real interest in the technical design of products, particularly how industry manufactures them and how they actually work. That's why we involve manufacturers in the course - you'll work on industry sponsored assignments that will really enhance your development as a designer. And you'll develop the range of skills that they have told us are essential for a good designer.

Entry requirements: Academic – 260 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 220 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

Options
We’ve got extensive computing facilities linked to rapid prototyping systems and large format printing at Markeaton Street, which means that you’ll be working with the latest computer aided design software and develop the knowledge and skills that are essential to work in the industry.
Stage two You’ll choose from: ▪ Eco Design ▪ Design for Manufacture and Materials Optimisation. Diploma in Professional Practice (optional) You’ll take: ▪ Applied Professional Practice ▪ Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice. Stage three You’ll choose from: ▪ Advanced Eco Design ▪ Advanced Manufacture Design.
You can go on an optional work placement between stages two and three, which is a fantastic opportunity to gain some real-world experience. You'll also gain an additional qualification - the Diploma in Professional Practice.
