Why choose this course? In the 2012 National Student Survey, 90% of our students were satisfied with how enthusiastic our teaching was. You could go on an Erasmus exchange to Charles University in Prague, to look at sociological issues from an international perspective. You’ll also develop a range of life skills to enhance your CV, to stand out in the job market.

About the course Everybody has ideas about society – poverty is due to individuals’ laziness;

Your career You could work in social services, education, criminal justice, welfare services, national and local government, counselling, charities and the voluntary sector. You may want to become a community development worker, equality and diversity officer, lecturer, teacher, police officer, probation officer, policy advisor or researcher. You could work in a hands on research or policy capacity with young people, families, victims of abuse, faith groups, refugees or adults with learning disabilities for example. The people skills which you’ll gain mean a career in management would be suited to you too.

SPRING

You’ll be taught through lectures, seminars and film and video. You’ll also gain skills in interviewing people and analysing facts and figures, which are both highly valued by employers. You’ll gain research skills enabling you to conduct interviews, surveys and analyse and interpret visual imagery. You’ll use these in your own research projects when you look into the real world of society and explore an area of your interest. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a work placement. You’ll be assessed in different ways to give you the chance to show your individual strengths and abilities.

Entry requirements: Academic – 220 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 180 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

Additional information You’ll look at previous theories on changes in society and culture, helping you to consider how the modern world has developed and how we can bring about change. You’ll be able to analyse social issues, ranging from the most everyday or intimate experiences, to those linked to global or historical questions. You can focus on issues that interest you, gaining deeper insight and building up your knowledge and expertise.
