Why choose this course? In the 2012 National Student Survey, we received 96% overall satisfaction for this course from our students. Our teaching team are actively involved in research and consultancy in sports organisations and many are accredited by various industry associations. You could also apply for internships working with athletes from different clubs to enhance your development.

You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, practicals and technology enhanced innovations. You’ll be involved in physiology testing, psychology case studies, coaching sessions and techniques in performance analysis. You’ll be assessed on your knowledge, applied practical and research skills, which will all take place in our new specialised facilities.

Your career This course will be the start of your career, so achieving a good degree and gaining employability skills along the way are key. Recent graduates have secured jobs in strength and conditioning, coaching, sport science support, the fitness industry, NHS, Police and the Armed Forces. Others have gained jobs from their work placements and internships. You could study our MRes in Sport and Exercise, where you can gain the skills in teaching, applied sport science and research, with the potential to progress to PhD level.

If you’re interested in the science behind sport and exercise performance and the role of exercise and activity in health, then this course is an excellent choice for you. Enhancing your employability through work placements and internship opportunities is a key part of this course. You’ll also be assigned a personal tutor to support you and help structure your personal development and career planning.

Entry requirements: Academic – 260 UCAS tariff points, of which at least 220 must be from your International Baccalaureate or equivalent qualification.

Options

There are opportunities to gain National Governing Body coaching awards in a range of sports that will develop your confidence, leadership skills and employability. You’ll also benefit from masterclass sessions from sport and exercise professionals about their experiences and career development. You can test and measure health and fitness and utilise computer software packages to analyse the results of performance in our new labs. You could also get involved with Team Derby which covers our courses, sports clubs, facilities and the Athletics Union.

What you’ll cover You’ll study subjects including physiology, psychology and biomechanics, and also choose from a range of optional modules so you can follow your interests and tailor the course to your career aspirations. Throughout the course you’ll develop your research skills to prepare you for your final research project.
