Biker Preacher’s Corner

There is an old phrase that goes something like this: over and out. We’ve all heard the phrase, but most of us don’t know where it came from. The term originally comes from our beloved armed forces and is also used in radio communications, like the CB radio.

So many people today are too easily offended by just about everything. These are the ones that have taken this phrase way too far, and way out of context from its original meaning. Some say over and out when they don’t get what they want out of a relationship, a marriage, or even membership in an organization—like church, a motorcycle club or a civic association.

People, we need to learn to persevere. We need to toughen up and honor our commitments instead of just throwing in the towel and giving up so quickly. James 1:4 says “But endurance (perseverance) must do its complete work, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.” If we don’t persevere through the hard times, we will never achieve a level of maturity and success that only come from and through those hard times.

When I was young, my mom used to have a couple encouraging statements that she would say to help me to dig deep, work hard, and finish the job. These sayings went something like “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” and “keep your nose to the grindstone.” What she was encouraging me to do was to stay focused, keep working hard, and to not give up, no matter the struggle that I might have been facing or the frustration other people may have caused.

My encouragement to you today is this: the relationship might seem like it’s on the rocks right now. But, don’t give up—love one another and communicate. Don’t give up so quickly. Things at work, at church, or in the club might seem like they’re going the wrong way. Stick it out, and be a part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Quitting never accomplished anything. What tends to happen when we give up too quickly is greater offense—and then out of the offenses and hurt feelings come slanderous comments that are made about the people, places and things that we’ve quit on.

Remember, there are two sides to every situation and then there is the truth. Stay involved, stay engaged and be a solution...not part of the problem
