ABATE
Congratulations Vince!
ABATE is working very hard in Lansing trying to make sure all the bikers in Michigan get included in the insurance bill that is being put together by our legislators. All independent riders—like your readers in Thunder Roads—need to call your state reps. and let them know that you are concerned about your health and welfare when it comes to coverage protecting you from going broke if you are involved in an accident. God forbid that you aren’t crippled or killed, not to mention the devastation to the families if we are injured or killed, and we can’t help or support those associated with the individual involved. It’s awful! I had the opportunity to go to Orlando Florida for the NCOM (National Coalition of Motorcycles) meeting. OMG, what an awesome experience I had meeting all the reps from so many different clubs—including the National President and National Vice President—across the United States. I have a whole different outlook on the biking world when it comes to respect and how to appreciate what 1% clubs have to deal with on a daily basis. They are no different than any biker you will associate with. Many are so respectful and aware of what’s happening in the biking world, from politics to motorcycle rights. When “Doc,” the Florida ABATE President, was speaking, everyone shook their heads in disbelief at his message regarding the attacks on everyone with a patch on their backs. If I could ask all of you who are reading this to please do your part in helping anyone who rides; see if there is something you can do to help from supporting ABATE to your local clubs. They don’t bite. They need support like everyone else! On May 23rd, Vince Consiglio and I were at the promotion for May is Motorcycle Awareness Month attended by Josyln Benson, Secretary of State. Their new campaign is “HARD TO SEE--Look Twice, Save A Life, Motorcycles Are Everywhere.” This was not exactly what we had hoped for, but at least Michigan is doing something to promote motorcycle awareness. Maybe they will listen to the leaders of ABATE and formulate better ideas on what would work better at getting the message out to the general public. Just ask Kid Rock; he will tell you “All Summer Long.” After all, ABATE is responsible for getting the bill passed (House Bill 4306) to get funding for the program! The riding season is in full swing, so please be careful out there and be on the lookout for some dumb, distracted drivers. When you see them on their phone, give them the #1 sign and let them know that being distracted while driving can cause catastrophic consequences leading to someone being injured or killed. We all want to return home to our families after an event or a ride where we enjoy the privilege of interacting with other bikers. Finally, I want to give a shout out to Thunder Roads; I am impressed with all the events you have and all the good you do! Thank you! May the road rise to meet you and the wind always be at your back! Hot Rod Beaton ABATE State Awareness Director
