FROM THE PUBLISHER I strongly believe that our motorcycle community represents some of the most important characteristics of our nation. As riders we head out onto the road to face new challenges, to explore, and put ourselves out there – maybe a little more vulnerable than we might otherwise be in a car or truck. It’s us on the bike, heading out to take on the world. And it’s that sense of adventure and excitement over what’s around the next bend or down the next few miles – which edges us on. It’s a similar spirit that drove settlers and pioneers to head out and build out our country. And as riders, we know that out there on the road – we are all brothers and sisters. Sometimes our luck will run out and we may find ourselves in need of help – and in many cases it’s going to be total strangers that answer the call. And I believe that most of us have that spirit within us – a calling to help those in need and to stand up for those that need defending, to challenge those that might otherwise cause them or us harm. I believe that it’s that same spirit that empowers someone to serve within their community, to help others, and in some cases to answer the call – and stand the line to serve and defend our nation in the most powerful all-volunteer military in the history of the world. Those serving, usually away from their home and loved ones, often face incredible stress and challenges – sometimes life and death. And this stress and conflict takes a toll not only those in service, but on their families as well. At the end of World War II – returning veterans took to the road on two wheels, and they launched many of our rowdier clubs. Clubs that celebrated individual freedoms -but still considered themselves patriots always. Loud motorcycles, crazy rallies, and just thundering down the road may have been a great escape and stress reliever for those coming home from the war. Today, as our conflicts have changed – more and more Veterans are returning home and struggling to cope and reconcile their different lives. Some are finding themselves fighting overwhelming challenges and stress – from which, far too many aren’t making it. With drugs and alcohol making things even worse. The solution is the same as it’s always been – Brotherhood. There’s no need for any vet – or any biker for that matter – to struggle through stress and conflict on their own. We are all in this together, but sometimes that’s hard to grasp when you’re in the midst of battle – personal or literally. The Veterans section of this magazine is meant to help connect Vets with organizations and events - opportunities to connect with other vets or folks that want to help. It also contains information on riding organizations and other groups that you can not only reach out to for assistance, but in many cases – you can actually get involved. And we’ve included information on resources offering support as you’re traveling down these roads. So, while we are still a motorcycle magazine – and you’ll recognize a lot of the same articles and features that we carry every month – this month has a little extra for those that have served and their families. And even if you haven’t served and don’t have anyone in your immediate family – you may find that the information is interesting and might be of use as you venture out onto the road. You just never know when you might run across someone needing a hand. And helping others, lending that hand – is what we do.
Live Strong and Ride Worthy! Sincerely, 4
D.A. Smith

Returning to Rebel Road “Michigan’s Biggest Biker Bash” Reasons to Ride Michigan™ (RtR) is proud to announce that we are returning to Rebel Road “Michigan’s Biggest Biker Bash” in 2024 – as both a promotional partner and sponsor, and as host of the 2024 Rebel Road Bike Show. Michigan’s premier motorcycle rally returns to the streets of Muskegon, Michigan July 17-21, 2024 – and RtR will be there! Rebel Road is a community driven rally with all of the proceeds going towards the Child Abuse Council of Muskegon County. With an all volunteer staff – Rebel Road is all about the children and supporting the local community. In 2023, RtR brought the Championship Bike Show Series® to Muskegon for the Rally and it was an unprecedented success. Bikes came from throughout the area and beyond, filling out a variety of classes with a wide range of makes, models, and years represented. “We’ve done Bike Shows before, with varying success. It was never a concern this year, as we knew things were handled. Everything was professionally done and the show was a hit!”, commented Gary Ridley with Rebel Road. “We’re looking forward to seeing the Bike Show continue to grow!” As part of RtR’s commitment to the rally and the region, the July 2024 issue of Reasons To Ride Michigan will be a special REBEL ROAD EDITION. In addition to regular content and features – there will be an extra focus on the rally, as well as ride stops and other events in the area. “The Muskegon area is a great one for riders – not only because of the beautiful shoreline and roads to explore, but because of its rich motorcycling history as well!” RtR Publisher Derek Smith affirmed. Over the last year, Reasons To Ride Michigan has also worked with the Muskegon Motorcycle Club (MMC) to help promote their events and riding within the area. The MMC was founded in 1920 and is one of the oldest, most well respected clubs in the country. They not only host road riding events – but off-road and even Hillclimb racing events as well. In fact, the MMC first hosted what would become the country’s first professional hill climb races back in 1923. Rebel Road was truly built by the local riding community – with riders and enthusiasts from throughout the area coming together to support the cause (The Child Abuse Council), but the downtown
businesses and region as well. Downtown Muskegon is a vibrant growing area with breweries, restaurants, bars, shops, and galleries – all contributing to the Rebel Road experience. There’s even a performance art center / hockey rink that serves up some amazing tacos and beverages as part of the party. And all of this comes together on the shore of Lake Michigan in the midst of one of the most beautiful riding areas anywhere in the Midwest. It’s truly an amazing rally. “We are proud to be a part of such an incredible event. It’s really amazing what a group of hard-working dedicated volunteers can do – creating one of the coolest motorcycle rallies we’ve ever attended, and to have all of the proceeds going to kids in need.. it’s simply amazing!,” affirmed Smith.
NEW FOR 2024 – MUSKEGON REGIONAL RALLY GUIDE! Working with the rally organizers, RTR will be helping to produce a regional RALLY GUIDE covering not only the rally and everything going on in the area – but also different ride stops and events going on in the areas. This will allow local businesses to get more involved in the Rally and take advantage of the thousands of riders that descend upon the area – even if they aren’t in the downtown Muskegon area.
Stay tuned for more announcements as the Rally approaches. For information on vendor and sponsor opportunities at Rebel Road or to discuss how you can get included in the Rally Guide, please email Info@ReasonsToRide.com
REBEL ROAD July 17-21, 2024 RebelRoad.org This is one Rally – that you don’t want to miss! Stay tuned for MORE announcement to come – regarding NEW RALLIES, BIGGER SHOWS, and even more excitement for the upcoming riding season. 8

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES MARY GILBERT, CMA STATE COORDINATOR
THANK YOU… Really isn’t enough for all that was sacrificed by both men and women who gave their lives for us. Whether they made it home to kiss their families or not, they paid a price that we could not ever repay. We talk about freedom as if it were an emotion or sense of privilege. There are those that act like tearing apart towns and desecrating statues is a right. It’s not. We have the right to speak our minds and give opinions on matters that pertain to us. We have the right to bear arms to defend our families, property, and country. We have the right to PEACEABLY demonstrate in a group. But we don’t have the right to steal, kill, and destroy just for the heck of it. That’s not what the wars have been fought for. That’s not why my dad, husband, sons, brothers, uncles and aunts, nieces and nephews spent endless hours in the strangest, cold, wet, and dark places around the world. That’s not why so many never returned home in one piece or not at all. So why did they go? To preserve. That’s right. Preserve, which is to maintain something in its original or existing state. To keep our country united and not under the rule of a type of government that disregards our true freedoms. The question is…have we forgotten that? We could all sit and argue the point, but that isn’t going to do anything but create a bunch of tiny wars within our own communities as it has already. A bit of irony, don’t you think? The goal of any enemy is to divide and conquer. So, who do you think the number one enemy is in our lives today? I will tell you he is well hidden, and he sneaks up on us when we least expect it. The number one enemy we have is the same one that is against everything that represents God. Our country was based on Godly principles set in motion by men of God who wanted to establish a better way for the people who fought to free themselves from tyranny. So why do you think that things are going the way they are in our country right now? Because a weak and blinded people who cannot stand together will surely be easier to conquer than those who maintain a united front.
believing lies. Stand therefore, having your loins gird about with truth, carrying a shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Put on the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness and the shoes of peace. (Ephesians 6:14-17) STAND FOR WHAT IS TRULY RIGHT! Show the enemy that the sacrifices made in every war we have fought and will fight have not and will not be in vain! And remember this…. the longer you sit, the easier it is to quit. Don’t just be in the moment, take charge of it! Thank you for all, thank Him above all! The days are getting shorter… Mary G.
Veteran…why did you go? Christian…why do you stand? Patriots… why do you align yourselves with others in pledge to allegiance? I can tell you why…preservation. And just like the sacrifice that was made on the cross by Jesus Christ to preserve what God our Father originally created, we choose to preserve what we know to be truth, freedom, and justice for all. So, stand when you see the flag, stand when you see injustice, stand when the enemy tries to create thoughts of evil instead of good, stand for the truth when everyone else around you is

Ever since World War II, less and less of our nation has answered the call to serve in our all-volunteer military. At any given time, less than 1% of our population is actively serving and less than 10% of our population can claim veteran status. The veterans living today have fought everywhere from the Pacific Theater of World War II to the mountains of Afghanistan. They have answered the call to defend our nation, to carry out missions, and protect the world from those that might otherwise seek to subjugate, persecute, or limit the freedom of others. As our nation struggles to find itself and cope with new realities and lifestyles, it’s important for us to stay focused on some of our core values.
“Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. That all men and women are created equal and are deserving of certain inalienable rights.” These principles are in conflict with many cultures and societies around the world. And in many cases – it’s upon our armed forces to protect us from these folks, that might otherwise cause us harm. This seems like a serious charge to lay upon someone – and it truly is. By swearing the oath to serve our nation – and to defend us from those that might otherwise cause us harm. And to those that have sworn that oath and answered the call – we must honor, respect, and help support them as they return home and look to rejoin our “civilized society”, Honoring veterans doesn’t always mean “taking care of them.” In some cases it means giving them the tools and support to take care of themselves. It means understanding the sacrifices they have made and giving the assistance needed to overcome the demons they have faced. It means giving them the respect they deserve and showing gratitude for the sacrifices they have made. It means taking the time to say “Thank you” and maybe being a little more understanding when needed. Not just on Veterans Day – but EVERY DAY. For it is every day that we benefit from and possibly take for granted the freedoms they fought for – for all of us. Thank you.

For each, we’ve included a few posts, but there are many more locations within the area for each of them. Our membership is comprised of Full Members (those with verified combat service) and Supporter Members (those who have noncombat military service and have a sincere dedication to helping veterans). Many members continue to serve in our Armed Forces, with several serving in combat areas now.

Both Marines and FMF Corpsmen who wore the eagle, globe, and anchor, have a very special bond and loyalty to one another, which comes quite natural to us. When you combine this bond with the love of motorcycling through the beauty of the country in which we would die for – you’ve created a special breed of person – A Leathernecks Nation Motorcycle Club Member! We are looking for a few good men who served with the Marine Corps, as well as Navy Corpsmen who served with the FMF. Honorably discharged, active duty, or retirees only. Our colors are earned only through hard work, respect, dedication and loyalty to the club. All cruiser style bikes are welcome but American is preferred. We are not a 1% club. Wheels For My Favorite Warrior Wheels 4 Warriors presents another Bike to a worthy warrior. By Marybeth Sullivan, Motorcycle Ohio Instructor and RtR Contributor Did you know there is a non-profit organization called Wheels 4 Warriors USA that gifts custom motorcycles to our deserving veterans? Everyday people donate bikes, then a custom bike builder makes it safe and stunning and customizes it to the hero’s personality. The builder donates his labor and people donate parts and services to make it roadworthy. In addition to that, all the hero’s safety gear and a motorcycle class is donated. Then they are given their license plates, stickers, insurance and gas for an entire year! All are made possible by donations from regular people and the Wheels 4 Warriors USA Foundation. I didn’t know anything about this until I was approached about nominating a local veteran. I was so surprised to hear about the program and all they do. I mean, a free motorcycle and all the goodies? All of our service men and women are deserving of such a gift. I was honored to be asked. I personally know a veteran named Tyler Patterson from Akron, OH that I thought would be the perfect recipient. He is 27 years old and already served 5 years in the Marne Corps then enlisted the Army and served 3 more years. I asked him why and he said “I wanted to jump out of airplanes”. Tyler grew up in the Ellet neighborhood of Akron and excelled at baseball. He joined the Marines to follow in his step-dad Jim’s example. Jim is a member of the Leatherneck Nation and an avid motorcyclist. Tyler shares his step-dads love for the wind. He wanted to be able to ride with him and make lots of road memories. Tyler is studying Industrial Technology starting next year and is looking forward to working on and operating heavy machinery. His hobbies include working on motors, guns and spending time with his friends. The bike started its life as a 2005 Victory Hammer painted in a green snakeskin theme. It was donated by Kyle McDaniel. It was then transformed by Sands Cycleworks in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio with a slew of others who pitched in to make this project happen. It really does take a lot of hands to complete such an undertaking. The bike needed a lot of upgrades to make it roadworthy and beautiful. Dustin Sands and his team of volunteers did exactly that. It was a frame up restoration including painting the frame and powder coating the wheels. The front forks were rebuilt. The engine was gone through thoroughly then the jugs were painted with American flags. There are so many subtle nuances on this bike, I could make a 10-page chapter on it. The brakes were replaced and returned to the proper and original location. New turn signals and battery. Custom painted and themed as a Marine uniform. Hence “Saber” was born. Check out all the photos to see all the details and the folks that made this happen. I don’t feel we can ever repay our veterans for their sacrifice to keep us free, but I am very proud to have been involved in this amazing program. There are several organizations out there dedicated to supporting our heroes. Please consider donating or volunteering. Marybeth Sullivan Contributing writer and Motorcycle Ohio Instructor

Cardo and Sena Mesh Intercoms Finally Get Together Sena and Cardo mesh intercom users have wished for compatibility ever since the two brands came out with competing mesh systems around 2018. They have always been able to connect using the "universal intercom" feature, but it worked by giving up other functions such as GPS access on one side. The other side treated the intercom connection as a phone call, disabling not only mesh intercom but GPS and regular phone calls as well. Limited features, limited range, hard to set up, making it completely unsatisfactory. In July, 2023, Cardo made a breakthrough, enabling new generation Packtalk models to bridge to Sena Bluetooth models, using their regular Bluetooth intercom pairing. The Sena user can then participate in a seamless conversation with all Cardo DMC mesh group participants while still having access to their phone and GPS. Great!
Getting Started- Hardware Cardo side- There are three hardware options: 1. Cardo Packtalk Edge- top of the line, about $350- latest technology with all the premium features. The helmet mount includes gold contacts that connect the Edge to the helmet speakers and microphone. The only regular connector on the device is a USB-C, which is used for charging and firmware updates. This permits the unit to be charged while riding. 2. Cardo Packtalk Neo- about $315, is virtually identical to the Edge except that the mount has no electrical connections and the wiring for helmet speakers and microphone connects to the Neo using its USB-C connector. The disadvantage is that the unit cannot be charged while in use, but battery life is not a problem anyway. 3. Cardo Packtalk Custom- about $250, uses a subscription model where you pay subscription fees to enable advanced features. This concept has not gone over well and I don't recommend it, as I was able to purchase the Neo on sale for about $20 more and never pay extra for features.
26
YOUR MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM
Sena side- There are three hardware/connection options of differing capabilities: 1. Cardo mesh to a traditional Sena Bluetooth only communicatorJust about any existing Sena model will work directly. (30 and 50 series Sena mesh models also work directly, but not with Sena mesh intercom at the same time. See option 3 to add Sena mesh intercom capability.)
Road Testing I use a Sena 50S, as do most of my regular riding buddies. Since I go to lots of rallies and ride with different people, I regularly encounter riders who use Cardo Packtalk models. At a recent rally I was eager to try out the new capability but quickly found several problems- over 90% of Cardo's installed base uses the older Packtalk models that don't support the new connectivity. Even if they have a new model, they may not have the latest firmware installed or know how to make it work. To eliminate those variables, I bought a Cardo Packtalk Neo so I would have everything needed to connect and know how to make it work. Once both units are properly set up, all it takes to complete the bridge is turning on Bluetooth intercom between Cardo and Sena units. My first test at a rally went great except that I encountered the Bridge/mesh problem with the Sena 50S. Later I was able to find the workaround explained in Option 3 using the Sena 20S as a gobetween. Having my communicators all set up to work makes it easy to connect with both Senas other Cardos and I am quite happy with the setup. It helps to have the bridge units very close together on one bike to minimize popping and cracking noises in the audio. Getting out of urban areas where there's lots of Bluetooth traffic helps too.
2. Cardo mesh to Sena mesh simple and direct- Pair the Cardo with a Sena +MESH, Bluetooth to mesh intercom adapter (about $125)
To Sum Up If you only ride with regular friends, it's simpler to have everyone on the same brand, and Cardo and Sena are both good choices. If you have a mixed group and want to try the Cardo-Sena Bridge, I have prepared a complete guiding document that includes step by step setup and connection of all units, connection details, battery life and many other in depth topics. Check it out at http://flybyweek.com/downloads/Cardo-SenaMeshBridgingv1.pdf Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts:
3. Cardo mesh to Sena mesh on 30 or 50 series- Pair the Cardo to a traditional Sena Bluetooth only intercom model such as a 20S or 20 Evo, then pair that to the Sena 30K (about $280-330) or 50S (about $340) mesh unit

Backroads of Appalachia! - Reasons to Ride Partner The leaves are falling to the ground here in our mountains and another riding season is coming to a close for us here on the Backroads of Appalachia. It was a season to remember this year as thousands of new riders came to our region to experience what we have to offer here in the last unexplored frontier on the East Coast. On the Motorcycle Side of our Non-Profit Organization, our all volunteer Whitley County Motorcycle Facebook Group averaged over 20+ new members per week all season long as more and more riders joined us in our mission to bring economic development to our small forgotten coal towns through Motorsports Tourism. It is truly a community effort here at the WCMG and we are making a difference and we could not accomplish what we have in such a short time frame without you the rider. We are humbled by the response we are getting now and no words can tell you how much we appreciate your support of what we do. This season we were able to attend 5 major Rally events, bring our new Backroads of Appalachia Live! Show to Facebook, add 8 new gps-enabled trail routes to our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application, and host over 25 events and rides helping many small towns, small businesses, numerous charities, and multiple people in need along the way. We also began adding gravel and adventure touring routes to our BOA Mobile Application and we are already working on the expansion of our trail route system to include another Appalachian state, West Virginia! This will allow us to reach even more impoverished areas across our region while also bringing you more of the best riding in the U.S.! When you come here you are not just making lifelong memories, you are also helping our area recover from years of economic downturn. For everyone who came to ride here or visit us this season, our media partners, our sponsors, and our state and local government supporters, we thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone next year as we pull out all the stops in 2024 to bring
you our biggest riding season, trail route system, and event schedule yet! Stay tuned next month as we begin our Winter coverage highlighting many different areas for you to check out and explore here on the Backroads of Appalachia starting with the one and only Country Music Highway 23! Let’s Ride Appalachia! Jay Fryman Founder, Whitley County Motorcycle Group Backroads of Appalachia Journalism Team

Cheesy Cauliflower Soup Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers)
This is a great hearty soup that is easy to double and serve a crowd!
2 tbsp unsalted butter
Cheesesteak Beer Soup
1 large yellow onion, diced
Serve 8 (or 4 hungry bikers)
1 medium head cauliflower, diced into 1 ½ inch chunks 4-5 cups chicken broth
1 whole large onion, diced
1 cup water
1 whole bell pepper, diced ( I use a small red and green pepper for color)
2 cups sharp cheddar, grated ¼ tsp salt
1 (32 ounce) package Velveeta cheese, cut into small cubes
¼ tsp pepper
3 tbsp butter
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
3 tbsp flour
Minced fresh dill for garnish
1 cups chicken broth
Melt butter over medium heat in a soup pot
1 tbsp beef stock powder
Add onion and sate until soft
1 1/2 cups cream
Add in the cauliflower and cook until beginning to lightly brown
1/2 cup strong beer
Stir in the broth and water then bring to a boil over high heat
Chop Steak-Umms meat into 1/2 inch pieces and cook lightly to remove excess grease and set aside
Reduce heat to low and allow it to simmer until cauliflower is very tender
Add onions and peppers to meat grease and add cook until soft
Pour mix into a bowl and allow it to cool a little to make it easier to handle
Sauté chopped onion and bell pepper in the meat grease and olive oil until onions are translucent, add to meat
Working in pour mix into a blender to fill about halfway then blend until smooth, then pour pureed soup back into the soup pot and repeat until all of the mix in smooth
In a soup pot over medium high, melt butter, add flour and cook till it comes together and lightly browns to make a roux
Bring back to a medium heat then add cheese and stir until melted.
Stir in beef stock powder, cream and beer, cook 2 minutes
Season with salt, pepper, and Cayenne (optional) then serve with a sprinkle of dill and extra cheese on top and some nice crusty bread
Cut the Velveeta into cubes and add to soup a few pieces at a time, allowing it to melt, stirring constantly so it doesn’t stick to the bottom
