FROM THE PUBLISHER
Years ago, one of our earliest partners asked me if the magazine was going to make it, and I assured him that it would. He then asked why I was so certain. I replied, “because I’m going to work until” it did – and then I went out and did it. I had no idea what it took to make a motorcycle magazine succeed, but we were going to find out.
That was almost 15 years ago, and it’s certainly been a long and interesting ride. We grew and evolved until we were the largest regional motorcycle magazine in the nation – averaging more than 100 pages an issue for more than 5 years.
A big part of the reasons that we grew so fast and became so large was that early on we choose a business plan that centered around partnering with organizations within the riding community. We found regional riding organizations and local charities that we could work with and help support their mission and events they hosted. This allowed us to get more exposure while serving the riding community. Win-win.
Then COVID came and the entire industry was seemingly put on hold –and then we essentially found ourselves starting over again. We were forced to adapt in order to deal with a whole new set of challenges –and an evolving community as well. We made some changes, updates if you will, and adopted a new more interactive, more efficient format. Beyond the physical changes to the magazines, we found ourselves evolving our core concept – into what you hold is Reasons To Ride.
Reasons To Ride is an evolution of that same original core concept and business plan – to build our name and increase awareness by supporting others within the riding community. Really not a revolutionary concept, but there are some challenges to it.
First off, you really need to find good partners – and that’s not always easy.
Secondly, you need to focus on the big picture and long game. Investing in the now with an eye on the future. That’s not always easy either, as you’re spending today while hoping for growth tomorrow. And lastly, you need to stay focused on the mission. Delivering a quality product while staying focused on activities and events which will represent us well. Which isn’t always easy, as there are always distractions… especially in our community.
As we prepare for the 2024 riding season, we are extremely proud of where we stand – and who we are standing with.
We are partnered with quality organizations and promoters – helping to host the largest motorcycle events in our area served, some of which are national in scope.
And we are committed to making a difference every day, with every ride and event that we participate in.
Not every ride or event that we participate in or even host will be a success. Things happen and sometimes even the best planned and executed efforts turn out to be more of a learning experience; and that’s ok. We will learn and grow from them.
Yeah, we’re just a bunch of bikers. Dad and brothers, sisters and mothers – just folks.
But we are going to make a difference and we’d like to invite you to ride with us.
As you turn the pages of this magazine and read over everything that’s going on within our riding community – consider how you might fit into everything that’s going on. Picture yourself at the events, on the rides, or even just with your bike parked at a show.
If you like what you see – don’t hold back. Go ahead and join in the ride – and let’s make a difference in our community and in ourselves this year. Let’s RIDE WORTHY this year!
Looking forward to seeing you out there.
Sincerely,
D. A. Smith Publisher, Reasons To Ride D.A. SmithSons
“Ebay Jake” #13 goes for the win! He looks to defend his title at Billy Lane’s SONS OF SPEED race on Saturday, March 2nd at the New Smyrna Speedway. Check out the full pic as this month’s calendar shot - and more on the races on page 22-23. For tickets and more, visit BillyLane.net
BECOME A LOCAL ROAD REP
If you’re a rider that’s active in your local riding community, we’d invite you to consider becoming a Local Road Rep for Reasons To Ride. This is NOT meant to be a sales position or full time job for anyone – but is a chance to help promote local events and businesses, while making a “few dollars” to support your riding habit!
Like most things, you get what you put out of it – but it’s meant to be a fun gig for riding enthusiasts. If you’re really active and cover a larger area, you can make good money – but that takes time and a commitment. The real payoff is to have a good time as the person to see about getting their events or even just their picture in the local biker mag.
We aren’t looking for guys wanting to be “part-time bad guys” or any nonsense like that, we’re looking for reliable good folks that want to help support others in the community. The ideal folks might be active supporters of a local charity ride, and are looking to expand their activities while getting more exposure for their own ride.
We can handle the sales aspects of the area, but we will look to you for pictures of local events and updates as to what’s coming up. And you’ll be able to make some money doing what you’re most likely already doing.
We’re asking for a minimum time commitment of 8-10 hours a month. It helps if you have a laptop and a camera – although a smartphone can usually do it. You’ll get some cool swag, access to rallies and other events, and a chance to help a lot of local folks. As our coverage and presence in the area increases, you are able to share in the revenue generated. It’s a pretty proven business plan – it’s what built this entire organization. We think it’s a pretty good deal – for the right folks.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We will be scheduling “Intro Video Seminars” over the next few months to help explain how it all works. And now is the time to jump in, as we prepare for the upcoming riding season!
So don’t delay – send us an email and tell us a little bit about yourself!

Ride Stops!
In May, Reasons To Ride will kick things off for the 2024 Ride n’ Win Riding Challenge! This challenge isn’t a skills challenge – it’s a challenge to just get out and ride as much as possible and share where you’ve been. We encourage riders to explore new areas and check out new events. We challenge riders to join us at new rallies and rides all across the Midwest – and even at some of the biggest national events across the country. And along the way, we’re looking for new places to stop!
Since its launch in 2011, this program has evolved and grown every year as we try to improve things and ensure that it’s a great time for everyone. This year is no exception, as we add even MORE STOPS and WAY MORE PRIZES! Our primary area of focus for our Midwest stops is across Michigan and Ohio. However, we will also be adding stops throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania as we develop our new Reasons To Ride: Appalachia programs in 2024. This is some of the best riding in the country and there are literally hundreds of really cool stops to discover.
If you own a business, are hosting a ride or other motorcycle friendly event, or would like to recommend a place for riders to visit – shoot us an email for more information on how to become a ride stop. Over 50,000 riders have participated in this program since launched – and we’ve awarded over 3,000 prizes – including motorcycles, travel packages, rally passes, concert tickets – and of course HUNDREDS of t-shirts and other swag!
For more information, email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com
NON-PROFIT EVENT LISTINGS – Only $1!
As soon as you’ve got a date and basic details locked down for your upcoming charitable motorcycle event – make sure you get it entered into the Reasons To Ride website. You can easily go onto www. ReasonsToRide.com and then select “Add Your Event” from the top of the page. Or you can enter - reasonstoride.com/submit-event/ (If you’re viewing this online, you can simply click on any of these links to take you right to the entry page.)
From here you can enter the basic information on your event, your contact details, and upload a flyer or photos. We will then review your post and confirm things – and then it will go online for all the world to see, right up until the day of your event. All for a single $1 donation.
We used to make these basic listings for free, but we had to wrestle with an endless stream of spammers, hackers, and folks posting up spam and fraudulent stuff. So, we added the $1 donation – and you wouldn’t believe how much it limited the garbage. Plus we use the $1 to help support local charities as well.
And if your event isn’t worth a $1 of your money to get out to the world – it’s probably not worth anyone elses as well?
MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES
MARY GILBERT, CMA STATE COORDINATORLet us March into a new season with praise!
Here we are on the edge of the riding season! How exciting and exhilarating it will be to finally get out and feel the wind after being shut up in our cages! We get grumpy when we are closed off for too long, don’t we? Well sometimes, even in those moments, we need to think about the goodness around us. These things bring a smile and even a little hope that lifts us up out of the blues of winter.
Thinking about the good things that have happened before, and even a little look at the not-so-great things, gives us an opportunity to reflect and reminisce about what we could have done differently or what we learned from the experience.
I have a Deluxe, have owned her for three years now. Just prior to that I attempted a Freewheeler trike. After having been on two wheels for thirty years, the three wheels were a bit of a different animal. Turns are different, the way you use your body to maneuver the trike is different from the bike…major learning curve and I mastered it, but I wasn’t happy with it. My theory is, if you aren’t excited about the ride from the start, you won’t be happy at the end of the journey. And I wasn’t a happy camper either way. Try as I might, it just wasn’t working for me, so wisdom prevailed, and the trade happened! What was the takeaway? Just because it looks good on paper doesn’t mean it’s going to fit the reality! My Blue Pearl is perfect for me and now we are just as happy leaving the driveway as we are when we return! It’s not always just the destination that makes the trip. Glad for the experience because I can say it was done, thankful for the outcome because what was learned in the process became valuable to me.
The bottom line: Reflection brings responsibility for change. We can either roll with it and get what we need from it, or we can roll in it and remain in the stink zone. Our choice. That’s the beauty of our lives…it is ultimately our choice. God set it up that way for us to have some control over our true destination. He put the plan in motion, we get to choose whether we will follow it. Kind of like the GPS, we can put in the address, allow the system to etch out the route, yet at any given time we can make a wrong turn and get off course. What happens then?
“Rerouting”! Same with our Father, the ultimate GPS…God’s Plan Saves.
So, what are the plans? Have you made a list for the next go around? There are plenty of events coming up that can hardly wait for your arrival! Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana calendars are packed full of adventures for us to ride into! One is CMA Seasons of Refreshing event: Ohio is April 5-6 in Pickerington, OH, Indiana is March 22-23 in Columbus, IN. Go to cmausa. org, click on events and get all the information you need for all events in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan! We welcome your presence!
Get into gear and we will see you in the wind with a smile as big as the sun!

OUTREACH REPORT
For over 20 years, our team has helped support local charitable events and non-profit organizations. In 2024, however, we are going to start sharing a lot more of what we’re doing – both in an effort to showcase the organizations and causes that we are working with, as well as encourage others to join in!
HOSTING A RIDE IN 2024? OFFER ONLINE PRE-REGISTRATION!
Reasons To Ride is working with corporate sponsors to offer Online Registration at NO COST to non-profit organizations or the charities they support through Ticket ReLeaf, Inc. This is an easy way to vastly improve your event by allowing more accurate planning, better protect against inclement weather, and expedite processing on the day of your event – to name just a few advantages. RtR can help arrange local, regional, or even national sponsors to help cover the cost of the online registration and marketing of your ride! Restrictions do apply – email Info@ReasonsToRide.com for more information.
For 2024 – we have sponsors especially looking to help sponsor / promote charitable rides and events aimed at supporting VETERANS, limiting / addressing TEEN SUICIDE, and women’s health issues. If you’re involved in an event focused on these causes – shoot us an email at Info@ ReasonsToRide.com
IT’S A TEAM THING.
RtR Offers Promotional Partnerships to Regional Riding Organizations and Charitable Groups
For 2024, one of our primary goals will be to develop regional partnerships with charitable organizations to both help support these groups and the work they do – as well as help promote the magazines and RtR partners within their region. The belief is that by working together, we can increase the impact and reach of both our messages.
Working with other regional partners and sponsors, there will also be opportunities for partner organizations to raise funds to support their organizations or their designated charities. Again, it’s a great opportunity for RtR to team up with established organizations to share revenues and ensure that everyone benefits from the partnership.
We’d much rather work with a charitable organization than sell them an ad – it’s a WIN WIN for everyone involved.
For more information, please email Info@ReasonsToRide.com
HOSTING A BLESSING? Don’t pay for ADVERTISING!
Now how often do we say that?! Fairly often if you’re part of a local grass-roots charity and hosting a nonprofit event! With the support of sponsors, such as ERSKINE LAW, we can help arrange sponsorship for your Blessing and possibly provide FREE ADVERTISING, banners, and maybe even blessing stickers for all the bikes! It’s a cool deal – and doesn’t cost your charity a thing! It’s part of our ministry and we want to help you reach even more people with yours! Email us for more information, but hurry – there are only so many events we can help with. Don’t miss out!
RtR and the OC PLUNGERS HIT THE MARK FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS!

This year, we are pleased to share that Erskine Law and Arsenal Harley-Davidson came on as sponsors as well, with Erskine jumping in with BOTH FEET as the Official Team Sponsor as well!
In just the team’s second year – the OC PLUNGERS raised over $25,000 for Special Olympics Michigan and came in FIRST PLACE in Oakland County amongst Law Enforcement teams.

RtR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES
PRESENTED BY ERSKINE LAW
After doing these shows for more than 12 years, it’s great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists among folks that customize or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show!
NEW for 2024!
Exhibitor Lanyards and Pins
Select RtR Bike Shows will now feature special badges and lanyards for those exhibiting motorcycles at the show. This will make it easier for everyone to identify who the builders are and encourage discussion as folks looks to hear more about the bikes. These lanyards will be provided free of any additional cost for those registering in advance for these shows, courtesy our sponsor – Erskine Law
We will also begin presenting “show pins” for those exhibiting motorcycles. Series and custom show pins will help recognize those that are “seasoned exhibitors” and the shows they have participated in. These collectible pins can be attached to jackets and vests; and will also be provided free of any additional cost for those registering in advance, courtesy Erskine Law
Expanded Sound Competitions
We will be incorporating informal sound competitions into more of the RtR Bike Shows this year. These will be “King of the Hill” style competitions with winners chosen based upon overall sound quality – not simply the decibels they can produce. While we will have several classes – the emphasis will be on creating a fun opportunity to showcase quality sound systems.
Legacy Bike Recognition
In an effort to showcase Best of Show motorcycles – and possibly give others a chance to win as well, we will now be inviting past winners to come and exhibit their bikes as prominent features of the shows they have won. We have special “extras” for Legacy Winners – and will work to get additional shots and features of these bikes from the shows to showcase within the magazines and online.
All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RtR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class.
It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well.
Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide
Bike of the Nights!
As always, the RtR crew will be out and about hitting various Bike Nights, Rides, and other events throughout the upcoming riding season. At select events, our team and our partners will be recognizing one or two bikes as “BIKE OF THE NIGHT” as part of the 2024 Championship Bike Show Series –presented by Erskine Law.
The owners of these motorcycles will receive a special trophy and invitation to participate in an upcoming bike show – sponsored by the magazine. We will also be featuring some of these bikes in the magazine and / or online.
At some locations, such as Arsenal HarleyDavidson, Fink’s, and Zeppe’s – we will be regularly presenting a BIKE OF THE NIGHT Trophy as part of their Bike Nights! Follow them or us on Facebook for more details!
If you’d like our crew to stop by your Bike Night or other event, just email us with details and contact information. Email us at Events@ReasonsToRide.com
Thunder Zone Vendor Areas
For the larger weekend shows, we often host THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas as part of our layout. These vendor areas offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. Many of our shows are part of rallies and events with more than 10,000 in attendance, several more than 50k, and even a few 100k plus! And for all of our Tour Stops – we work with vendors to ensure a seamless, successful experience. However, at most – space is limited! So, email us ASAP to get on the list and reserve your spots! For a complete schedule and more information on vending at these events, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

MICHIGAN’S BIKE WEEK RETURNS TO MUSKEGON!
We are all counting down to the week of July 17-21, when we will be heading to Muskegon Michigan – right on the shores of LAKE MICHIGAN – for MICHIGAN’S BIGGEST BIKER BASH – REBEL ROAD!
This is an incredible rally in one of the region’s most scenic areas –drawing thousands of bikers from across the state, Midwest, and even Nation.
When you consider everything Rebel Road has to offer, along with Hot Rod Harley-Davidson down the street, and of course the historic Muskegon Motorcycle Club hosting their HILL CLIMBS and drags the following weekend – it truly is MICHIGAN BIKE WEEK!
For 2024, Reasons To Ride has teamed up with Rebel Road and the Child Abuse Council of Muskegon to help kick things up and help spread the word about this amazing event – of which 100% of the proceeds go directly to help support local kids in need. Here are just a few of the things in the works now –
KICKING THINGS UP ON STAGE!
As the rally has continued to grow and evolve – Rally organizers are kicking things up on the main stage, which was kind of a necessity as the bikes are getting louder and louder on Western Avenue.
For many, Chad Flores stole the show when he took to the Miller Lite Stage last year during Rebel Road. His hard hitting “Michigan Country” blew away the crowd after winning the chance to open for Ward Davis through last year’s Battle of the Bands.
On Friday, July 19th – Josey Scott – the original voice of Saliva will be headlining the Miller Lite Stage. As the lead singer, Josey created rock anthems such as “CLICK, CLICK, BOOM”, “Your Disease” and “Anthem”. You can check them out at JoseyScottRocks.com
On Saturday, July 20th – the REBEL ROAD will ROCK with the rowdy big stage show that is TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION. THC has been a favorite at rallies and bike events across the country – and Rebel Road is pleased to present them at part of this year’s rally.
Even with this jacked line-up, the Rebel Road concerts remain completely free to attend thanks to Rally sponsors, including - Miller Lite, Twisted Tea, Michigan Biker Law, Betten Chevrolet Cadillac GMC Buick, and Reasons To Ride: Michigan
BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2024
Even with recent success, the rally is still focused on showcasing and promoting the local community – including local musicians. After last year's success with our first-ever Battle of the Bands, we knew we needed to kick it up a notch for year two. So, we've partnered with Rock 101.7 FM and The Intersection to present the Rebel Road Battle of the Bands 2024.
Three nights of competition with the winner getting a chance to open for Texas Hippie Coalition at Rebel Road 2024!
Preliminary Rounds will take place March 22 and 23 at Elevation with the finals taking place March 30 at The Intersection. Think your band has what it takes to win? Get entered to find out! Otherwise, come check out some great acts and help support the Child Abuse Council of Muskegon County . To register your band for a chance to qualify, just go to ROCK1017FM.com.
Find tickets and more info at www.sectionlive.com
The REBEL ROAD BIKE SHOW
Last year’s bike show showcased an amazing array of bikes of various styles from across the Midwest and even Canada. Like everything else, this year’s show promises to be even bigger and better as the RtR Crew has been conspiring with the Rebel Road team to come up with even more excitement and extras for those coming out. Look for new badges and extras for those exhibiting bikes – as well as new classes and possibly even a SOUND COMPETITION
For more information on the RR 2024 Bike Show presented by Reasons To Ride, check out the Facebook event page.
MORE VENDOR / EXHIBITOR OPPORTUNITIES!
Reasons To Ride will also be collaborating with Rally organizers and sponsors to introduce expanded vendor opportunities – including possible Paint / Pinstripper areas and motorcycle service areas. We are also looking to encourage more Michigan riding organizations and event organizers to come out and set up during the Rally. For information on vendor opportunities – please email us at Info@ ReasonsToRide.com

THE RALLY GUIDE and RALLY RIDE NEW FOR 2024!
Of course, with so many things going on – there needs to be an Official Schedule for the Rally and various events / activities being held throughout the area. So, Reasons To Ride will be collaborating with the Rebel Road Rally and other local businesses and riding organizations to create an OFFICIAL 2024 RALLY GUIDE for the Muskegon Region and MichiganBikeWeek.com. Additionally, the Rally Guide will be featuring a new RALLY RIDE – to help showcase recommended ride stops and businesses throughout the area. This will be the ONLY Official Guide to Michigan’s Bike Week – and will be offered in both print and digital versions.
If you have a business catering to, or hosting an upcoming event for motorcycle enthusiasts, or are in the area and simply want to support the cause – we’d invite you to become a part of the Rally Guide and possibly a STOP on the Rally Ride. This is your best means of reaching riders attending the rally – with copies being placed directly into the hands of riders at hotels, restaurants, and event locations throughout the Rally. It will also be sent out to over 300,000 print and digital subscribers, followers of Reasons To Ride! For information on how you can be involved – email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com
When folks approach us for help with their Poker Runs or motorcycle events, the number one area of concern is almost always “Sponsorships”. Easily 7 out of 10 requests center around folks needing help with arranging sponsors and raising funds for their ride. And 90% of the time, folks are always making the same mistake.
And that is understanding the simple fact –
“Your cause alone is NOT justification for sponsors to open their checkbook.”
This doesn’t imply that 90% of business owners and operators are cold hearted, insensitive folks. It’s simply the reality of doing business – and staying in business.
Especially these days, most business owners can’t simply fund every worthwhile cause that comes through their door. Business operators have an obligation to look out for their own interests – and remain in business. Many local businesses, especially these days, are facing a myriad of challenges and in many cases – increased costs. In most cases, they need to consider what business benefits your sponsorship offers them REGARDLESS of the cause.
For a simply raffle donation or smaller donation, sure – the cause alone may justify some contributions, especially if it’s a well-known charity or cause. Veterans causes, children’s charities, cancer –anything that impacts a lot of people – will prompt some support. In many cases, they may donate simply because they like you and appreciate anyone making an effort to help others. But if you are looking for significant sponsorships, you need to come in the door with supporting arguments as to why they should invest in your ride.
Legitimate reasons include –
Traffic – How many people can the business expect to come through their door as either a sponsor or Ride Stop. Will this traffic generate off-setting income?
Branding / Positive Exposure – Does your Ride / Event offer the business a chance to positively showcase themselves within the community or cause folks to associate them with a strong brand or identifiable cause. How is this conveyed to the public or even ride participants?
Direct Return – Offer an immediate return on their investment in the form of tickets / passes for the ride and after event for them to distribute to customers.
“Stop into ABC Harley-Davidson™ and PRE-REGISTER for the ride, and ABC will cover the cost of the ride!”
How do you MONETIZE the value of your Sponsorships?
Make them a Stop. The easiest and most prominent means of offering value to a sponsor is by making them a RIDE STOP, and for your strongest sponsors – making them a starting or ending point. If possible, ALL of your Ride Stops should be sponsors.
Allow them to market directly to your participants / supporters. Allow your sponsors the chance to deliver their message / invitation directly to your participants and supporters. This might include:
• Setting up a booth at the event.
• Delivering a presentation to your organizations at a meeting before or after the event.
• Insert a flyer or coupon into a “swag” bag or distributing them to participants directly at check-in.
• Create a Program or Ride Card that features the sponsors and their message.
• Collect lead / contact information through registration or door raffles (w/ email addresses). Make sure you let participants know that you will be sharing their information with sponsors.
• Put them on ride t-shirts or banners at the event.
What to ask for / How to present?
Prepare a simply one sheet that outlines what it is you’re proposing. Keep it simple. It should cover the basics –
When / Where / Why? – When and where is the Ride and what’s it supporting.
Who? – Who are you? Is there an organization behind the event, is it a certified 501c3 charity?
How? – How are you getting the message out. What’s your plan?
“We will be promoting the ride through Reasons To Ride Magazine, a regional motorcycle magazine reaching over 300,000 riders across the Midwest. They offer both a print magazine and online promotion through digital editions and social media. In addition, we will be distributing over 500 handbills and posting flyers at over 50 locations throughout the area.”
What? – What is it that you’re asking for? In most cases, we recommend a basic three tier structure for Sponsorships. Make it simple and easy to convey so that anyone in your group can easily present.
Presenting Sponsorship – should include them on everything, maybe even the “name” of the ride. For example, “The Michigan Biker Law Ride for Veterans”. Don’t be afraid to make this worth a lot and possibly even include multi-year options. A commitment to a long term relationship and recognizing the value of it – will be appealing to most sponsors, especially if you’re asking for a significant investment. Always, though, allow them the option of excusing themselves (well in advance of next year’s event) if they are not happy or don’t see the value in the event. Essentially you are giving them the FIRST OPTION for the next year, however they must exercise it right away. This is a great excuse for getting them to commit early. These should ALWAYS be exclusive in terms of their market and direct competitors, not only in terms of the Presenting Sponsorships – but ALL sponsorships and on-site at the event. The value of the Presenting Sponsorship depends entirely on the size of the Ride / Event and the amount of advance promotion / exposure you have. If you’re running ads in magazines (such as Reason to Ride!) and circulating flyers / posters throughout the area – it’s reasonable to ask for at least $1,000 - $5,000 for established rides. If you’re doing more expensive promotions – such as full page ads or ads for months in advance, maybe radio or billboards – you must justify $5-10,000 for bigger rides and events.
The key here is to remember – you’ll RARELY (if ever) get it if you don’t ASK.
Supporting Sponsors – Allow for multiple Supporting Sponsorships and maybe include them on on-site and online materials, but not to the extent or scale as the Presenting Sponsorships. These could be half as much or maybe even less than the Presenting Sponsorships. In most cases, these might be $500 - $1,000 in cost.
Community Supporters – This is the basic level of sponsorship and should allow any business that wants to support the “cause” to donate and get recognized without a huge investment. Maybe recognize them as part of a list on a banner, program, and online. NOT on ride posters, flyers, or prominent signage. In most cases, these sponsorships are $100 or so.
ReasonsToRide can help promote your event for as little as $100 and has basic Ride Promotional Packages starting at $500 that can include online pre-registration, digital + print advertising, and even assistance with sponsors and on-site coordination. The First Steps.
First off, identify potential sponsors within the community. Working with your board and volunteers, create a spreadsheet of prospects. Make it the theme of a meeting and brainstorm as a group. Take note of known contacts and relationships that your group may have with the prospective sponsors. Identify specific people to approach each sponsor. Assign a team, whenever possible.
Make sure you cover, the usuals and even a few reaches –Motorcycle Dealerships (Potential Starting / Ending Spots)
• Bars / Restaurants (Potential Ride Stops)
• VFW’s / Legion Halls (Potential Starting / Ending Spots)
• Tattoo Shops
• Retail Shops
• Car Dealerships
• Insurance Agencies
• Law Firms
• Banks
• Bail Bond Companies
• Smoke Shops
Make first, informal approach in late September / October - tail end of riding season while the value of the motorcycle community is still front and center in their mind. Some companies do their budgets in the Fall and that’s the time to get in your request. In some cases, it’s easier to get $5,000 in the Fall than $50 in the Spring. However, don’t be surprised or put-off when they ask you to come back in January or February. The process varies greatly with different companies and organizations.
Of course, those making the approach should be credible and effectively represent the ride, event, and the cause it supports. You are essentially asking these folks to invest in YOU and trusting that you will help others with their money. Don’t underestimate this. Along these lines, NEVER drink while making a presentation, even while at a bar. Nothing is gained by it – and you risk having them question your reliability and potential risk to investing in you and your ride.
Track the approaches and status of each of prospect on your spreadsheet.
During the Event.
Make sure that you make your sponsors part of the program on ride day.
• Invite them to set-up or participate in the Ride. Give them a number of “passes” or invites for them to use or hand-out to customers, friends, or family.
• Frequently announce / recognize sponsors throughout the entire event. It’s worth having a DJ / MC for this alone if necessary.
• Hang banner(s) recognizing sponsors prominently at both check-in and at any after-ride festivities.
• Take photos that include the sponsor (their business, their logo, their people..) whenever possible. Make it clear that they are part of the ride / event.
• Make sure that you save any programs (mentioning sponsors) or signage. You’ll want these for follow up with sponsors and your lead-up for next year’s ride / event.
After the Ride.
When it comes to your sponsors – it’s ESSENTIAL that you follow up with them after the event unless you’re not planning on hosting the ride / event or seeing them ever again.
• Drop-off or send them a copy of any programs / signage from the ride that includes them.
• Drop-off or send them a personalized letter or plaque that recognizes them for their support. Wall plaques are GREAT – because it not only gives them something to mount on the wall and show off (giving them additional exposure) but it also promotes your event to potential riders and sponsors. “Hey, I’d like one of those on my wall!”
• Recognize them with a post on social media, tagging them if possible. Include photos of the event that include their business, their logo, or their people. Whenever possible, include a photo of the principles with you or at the event. That’s a brief summary of some recommendations and ideas that you might consider. Of course, things vary widely based upon the specific ride / event and your cause. First year events should take a very different approach - seeking high visibility sponsors more as partners to give credibility and exposure to your ride. Well established, larger rides can certainly kick things up a lot.
The key points remain the same, though, for all rides. For more information and assistance with promoting your ride or upcoming event, you can of course contact us directly. That’s pretty much what we do. We also have bundled packages that include everything – print and digital ads, flyers, banners, and even
help distributing it all – at amazingly reasonable rates. We can also discount things and offer additional services such as designing flyers in exchange for sponsorship recognition. We can help each other –as promotional partners.
That’s pretty much our business. For more information, email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

Things can get boring during winter so the Garage Brewed Motorcycle Show, held annually at the beginning of February at the Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the perfect way to spend a cold Saturday.
The show is organized by a dedicated crew from Cincinnati Cafe Racers (CCR), a Facebook group based in the Greater Cincinnati area which includes Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and South Eastern Indiana.
They are fans of many different styles of motorcycles, with an emphasis on vintage and classic bikes, both stock and customized. Their membership is diverse, and they ride many different types of motorcycles, scooters, mopeds, and morejust about anything with two wheels.
February 3, 2024
There were about sixty bikes in the show, entered in the Classic, Race, Pro Custom, and Garage Custom classes. The Garage Customs have always been my favorites, as the use of junk, mismatched parts, etc. demonstrates creativity and a sense of humor.
Attendees voted on their favorites. Here are the People's choice awards for 2024:
First place: 1st Shane Richardson Tyler's Army 1999 Kawasaki Concours ZG1000. This was my favorite bike of the show- I owned one of these bikes from 1987 to 2001 and this one is NOTHING like the one I had!
Third place:

First let’s talk about Red River Gorge for those of you out there who may not know about it and what it has to offer you the rider.
About the “Gorge” and the Thrill of the Ride!
Nestled in the heart of Eastern Kentucky's Appalachian region lies the captivating Red River Gorge, a true haven for outdoor enthusiasts, adventurers, and those who want to experience the true awe-inspiring beauty of one of mother nature's most spectacular creations. While renowned for its hiking trails, rock climbing, and breathtaking natural landscapes, Red River Gorge also offers an exhilarating experience for motorcycle enthusiasts. With winding roads that snake through dense forests, rugged terrain, and stunning vistas, exploring Red River Gorge on two wheels promises an unforgettable journey. For motorcycle enthusiasts, Red River Gorge presents a playground of winding roads and scenic byways waiting to be explored. The journey begins as riders navigate the winding paths leading into the
gorge, where the landscape transforms into a breathtaking panorama of lush greenery, towering cliffs, and meandering waterways. One of the most iconic routes in the area is the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway, a 46-mile stretch of road that winds through the heart of the gorge. As riders traverse this scenic route, they are treated to panoramic views of sandstone arches, towering rock formations, and the serene beauty of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
Adrenaline-Pumping Twists and Turns
While the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway offers a leisurely ride with plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the sights, thrillseekers will find their adrenaline fix on the more challenging roads that crisscross the region. The narrow, winding paths that cut through the forest provide an exhilarating ride, with tight twists and turns that demand precision and skill.
One such road is the KY-77, known colloquially as the Nada Tunnel Road. This narrow, winding route takes riders through the historic Nada Tunnel, a 900-foot-long tunnel blasted through solid rock in the 1910s. Emerging from the tunnel, riders are greeted with stunning views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys, making for an unforgettable experience.

FIREARM REPORT: PROPER FIREARMS HANDLING: At the Range
In terms of your safety and those around you – it’s FAR more important that you know how to properly handle a firearm than actually owning one. The key to understanding and being able to shoot properly means practicing until you are comfortable and absolutely familiar with your firearm. A shooting range is just the place to gain expertise and confidence with your firearm while improving your marksmanship. An important part of the training process is understanding gun range etiquette. Understanding the dos and don’ts is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience at the shooting range.
Even experienced gun owners can get too comfortable. Forgetting to strictly follow all safety procedures can have deadly consequences. Handling a gun should never be taken lightly. So here is a basic review of gun range safety rules. Each range has its own set of rules. Know them. To start, here are a few questions to ask the range operators if you’re not already clear on them.
• What are their safety rules? You should never enter a shooting range without an awareness of their specific set of rules.
• What type of firearms are allowed on this range?
• Is drawing from the holster allowed? If so, what type of gun holster is allowed on this range?
• Is rapid fire shooting allowed?
• What type of ammunition is allowed? This sounds simple, but there are definite limitations at some ranges, such as no armor-piercing ammunition, tracer rounds or potentially flammable ammunition.
• What type of shooting targets are allowed?
Outdoor ranges may have more flexibility in their range rules, but it is always good to adhere to the gun range safety rules above.
• Know if the outdoor range is a “hot” or “cold” range.
o Hot ranges allow firearms to be loaded when not shooting. Firearms must remain holstered until ready to shoot at your target (no exceptions).
o Cold ranges require the firearm to be unloaded until your turn to shoot and given a command to load and make ready.
• Outdoor ranges will generally have a “Safe Table” in a safe location where firearms can be handled.
• Outdoor ranges where shooting at multiple targets is allowed will generally have a “180 rule,” where muzzle can break to a 90 degree right / 90 degree left line.
Do: Put safety precautions first.
You are responsible for your own firearm, your behavior and knowing standard gun safety rules.
• Know the condition of your firearm before you start to shoot and after you’re finished. Is it loaded or unloaded? Never, ever assume.
• When you arrive at an indoor shooting range, proceed to your lane and place your firearm on the tray with the muzzle pointed down range. (Your firearm stays there until you’re finished and either re-holster or put it in your range bag).
• Your firearm must be pointed down range at all times (loading, unloading, dealing with malfunctions, etc.)
o If you have a malfunction you’re not sure how to fix, lay the firearm down (pointed down range) and ask a Range Safety Officer (RSO) for help.
o If you have a malfunction you do know how to fix, fix it with the firearm pointed down range.
• Keep your finger outside the trigger guard and on the slide until your firearm is on target. When finished, place your finger back on the slide with muzzle pointed down range.
• Know your target and beyond. (Even at a range? Yes, the firearms range is where you practice mindset and conditioning.)
• Clean up after shooting. When finished, pick up or sweep up your brass, targets, etc. Leave the range cleaner than when you arrived.
Do: Wear proper safety gear.
Having the proper safety gear for the shooting range is important to protect your hearing, your eyesight and more.
• Eye protection should be safety rated and wrap-around style.
• Hearing protection can be foam ear plugs or quality electronic gear. Investing in electronic gear is highly recommended to provide maximum protection, especially at indoor ranges where the person next to you may be shooting an AR-15 rifle.
Do: Understand the cease fire command.
The cease fire command is more likely on an outdoor shooting range but could happen at any range.
Cease fire means just that: stop firing. Lay your firearm down in a safe condition.
Do: Never point a gun at anything you’re not willing to shoot.
Of all the rules of safe gun handling, this is one of the most important, both on the range and off. Never point a firearm at anything you are not intending or willing to shoot.
Too often, people will turn, gun in hand, to talk to someone or show them something. This can cost a life. It’s very easy to do without thinking – even for experienced gun owners.
Now for the don’ts of a shooting range.
Don’t handle your firearm behind the firing line.
Your firearm belongs at the firing line on the stall tray (indoor ranges). Don’t engage in horseplay with friends.
The range is where you must be serious. This is not a time for goofing off or joking with friends.
Don’t visit a shooting range if you’ve been drinking (even just one drink) or using drugs. This endangers your life and the lives of others.
Don’t ever go in front of the firing line.
Sometimes targets fall. Leave them and ask the RSO to retrieve them for you if necessary. The RSO will call a cease fire and ensure the range is safe.
Don’t leave the stall (indoor range) with a firearm.
Remove the firearm from your range bag in the stall and replace it in your range bag in the stall before you leave.
DIY TIPS to Ready your Motorcycle for Spring
Did your heart sink as you watched the snow melt and realized you hadn’t winterized your motorcycle? These DIY motorcycle tips can get your bike ready for spring and get you on the road for a smooth highway cruise.
1. Check for Small Animals and Debris
If you haven’t covered your bike thoroughly for the winter, you may be surprised to find that a small animal has taken up residence in your exhaust or air intake system. Examine these areas before starting your bike, and send any critters on their way. Look for signs of any damage to wires and clear any possible nests.
2. Drain the Gas Tank
If the gas tank still contains old, untreated fuel, your motorcycle probably won’t start. Drain the fuel tank and examine the fuel. If brown grit comes with the fuel, it’s a sign the inside of your fuel tank has rusted. Flush your fuel tank with acid remover to prevent problems with your fuel system and ensure clean-burning fuel. Your local shop can assist with this if needed.
3. Treat Gasoline with Fuel Stabilizer
Even after draining the fuel system, there’s a chance that stale gas and ethanol are left in the gas tank. Stale gas and ethanol can cause engine misfiring or problems beyond simple DIY motorcycle repair. Adding a fuel treatment to the tank clears any unwanted leftovers, plus helps the fuel system stay healthy. It’s an inexpensive preventative measure that can save you a lot of headache –and a lot more $$$. https://amzn.to/4bSya1G
4. Change the Oil
If you didn’t change the oil before “storing your bike” – now’s the time to do it, before the season starts, especially if it’s been sitting. The oil may have condensation build up from the winter and lack of use. Even if you did change it out a few months ago – you should still check the level and consider any new marks on the garage floor. You should also make it a habit to check the oil before any long rides during the season.
rich tap water. Distilled water keeps the combination of sulfuric acid and water as it should be without introducing minerals.
Once your battery is charged, test it. If it isn’t holding a charge, replace it now, especially if it’s over four years old. Replacing an old battery can prevent unforeseen problems such as being stranded or acid leaks.

7. Check Electrical System
https://amzn.to/3T8NP5R
There’s nothing worse than thinking you have enough gas for a longer ride, and then find out the hard way that your gauge malfunctioned. Examine all gauges, switches, head lights, rear brake lights, the horn, and turn signals before hitting the road.
8. Brighten the Headlights
S&S Cycle Oil Change Kit - https://amzn.to/3OUkWYB
5. Check All Fluids
Gasoline and oil are just two of the fluids you should check when reviving your bike in the spring. Check hydraulic and brake fluid levels as well. Make sure any fluids left sitting in the reservoirs over winter didn’t deteriorate. Examine fluid colors and consistencies. Replace fluids that look dirty or different from when new. Complete fluid change kit - https://amzn.to/48pWN2R
6. Inspect Battery
If a motorcycle battery was left on your bike over winter, you will need to either charge it or replace it. First, pull it out and charge it overnight. Secondly, if you don’t have a maintenance-free battery, check fluid levels in each cell at this time. Use distilled water to fill the cells that are below the recommended level, not mineral-
If your bike’s headlight lenses seem foggy, and visibility is limited, it’s time for some polishing. You can buy a headlight cleaner kit for around $20, and clean the headlight yourself. Many motorcycle accidents occur because car and truck drivers claimed to not even see the motorcycle. Prevent unsafe riding by making sure your bike’s lights are at their brightest. https://amzn.to/3PjgAur
9. Examine the Controls
Test your steering, throttle, and clutch to make sure they still work. Examine cables for frays, corrosion, or damage to coverings. Inspect lines and hoses for cracks, cuts, or signs of leaks. Control cables or hoses should not be folded or kinked, and steering should move freely. If this is not the case for your motorcycle, consider bringing your bike to a trusted mechanic to fix issues with controls.
10. Clean and Lubricate Chain (If Bike Doesn’t Have Drive Belt)
A dirty chain will inhibit how a bike runs. For this DIY motorcycle fix, buy a wire brush and dip it in degreaser. Slide the brush along the chain until it’s completely free of debris and mud. Then, rinse with fresh degreaser and wipe dry with a rag or sponge. Finish by spraying the sprocket side with lubricant. Also check for slack in the chain and adjust to manufacturer’s specification. https://amzn.to/49NCygQ
11. Check Brake Pads and Levers
Check your brakes before you ride to make sure your first ride of the summer isn’t your only ride of the summer. Brake pads should be at the very least 1/8 inch thick, preferably more. If brake pads are thinner or broken—replace immediately.
Test the position of your brake lever as well to make sure nothing shifted while in storage. Sit on your bike, grasp the handlebar ends, and place your fingers over the brake lever. If the lever touches slightly behind your fingers’ first knuckles from your fingernails and does not engage brakes, you’re in luck. No adjustments are needed. If the brake lever feels far away, use the lever span adjustment knob to move the levers to the correct position for you.
12. Measure Tire Air Pressure
Check all tires to make sure the pounds per square inch (PSI) are at the recommended level. It’s natural for tire pressure to decrease during winter, but if your tire pressure is below the recommended level, inflate tires to proper level to ensure safe and smooth riding. Check also for any damage such as cracks, worn tread, punctures, or bulges. If you find damage, replace the offending tire before riding.
There a number of very convenient, portable air compressors available now that can also help you accurately monitor your tire pressure. Some units can also double as battery back-up’s as well while on the road for your phone – or even provide a light. https://amzn.to/48A7yQ9
13. Let the Engine Run
Allow the engine to run for a few minutes and listen for strange noises. Doing so ensures the motorcycle can stay running. You don’t want to have your engine stall and fail miles from home!
14. Inspect the Spark Plugs
Check the gaps in the spark plugs for proper spacing. Check your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s specifications and adjust. Replace worn plugs as needed.
15. Check for Loose Bolts
Once you’re sure your motorcycle can stay running, check all bolts on your bike to guarantee everything is tightened properly. Take the bike for a short test ride, and feel for abnormal vibrations. Once you’re back from the ride, check all bolts again to make sure nothing came loose. If all bolts and parts are in place, but you’re feeling a rumbling or unusual vibration, there might be a bigger issue such as:
• Motor mounts
• Swingarm
• Axle
• Steering head fasteners
• Wheel balance
• Suspension
These issues can be dangerous and most likely require a visit to a trusted mechanic. They should be fixed before riding.
