Marina di Massa nasce come località balneare d’elite a cavallo tra fine Ottocento e primi del Novecento . La facilità con cui poteva essere raggiunta dalle grandi città del Centro- Nord, il microclima unico, dovuto anche alla presenza, a pochi km., delle maestose Alpi Apuane (in pochi minuti di auto si possono raggiungere i 2000 mt. di altezza) vide, infatti, già in quegli anni la nascita dei primi stabilimenti balneari e divenne la sede di importanti villini aristocratici, costruiti secondo lo stile Liberty allora in voga. Nello stesso periodo sorgeva, per accogliere, i bagnanti anche lo storico Grand Hotel Tirreno.
Marina di Massa became a high-end seaside resort around the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s. It was easily accessed from the major central and northern Italian cities, with its own microclimate thanks to its proximity to the Apuan Alps – a few minutes in a car and you can be over 2 km. above sea level – and thus a number of seaside structures and major aristocratic villas were built during this period in the Liberty style then in vogue. Da Marina di Massa parte un viale di grandi dimensioni, il c.d. “lungomare” che collega tutta la costa fino a Viareggio. Una pista ciclabile collega Marina di Massa con Forte dei Marmi. Nella zona centrale così detta del Pontile (ex ponte caricatore Cuturi) sono ancora presenti alcuni storici stabilimenti balneari (qui chiamati “Bagni”) la cui concessione demaniale risale ad oltre un secolo fa. Il pontile, che sorge di fronte all’Hotel Tirreno, oltre ad offrire una passeggiata suggestiva sul mare guardando le montagne che vi si specchiano, è anche un punto di ritrovo degli amanti della pesca soprattutto durante le mareggiate dove vengono posizionate e calate delle reti dette “bilance”, e nel periodo estivo è il luogo da cui partono le imbarcazioni per le gite marittime verso la vicina Liguria. La caratteristica della zona, unica forse sull’intera costa toscana, è che, a differenza delle riviere attigue, lungo i quasi 8,5 km di litorale, sono presenti più di una decina di scogliere artificiali perpendicolari alla costa, che partono dalla spiaggia e si inoltrano nel mare per un centinaio di metri, larghe dai 6 ai 10 metri e distanti tra loro 200 m circa, tali da eliminare il cosiddetto fenomeno dell’erosione.
near Piazza Betti. From Marina di Massa, a broad street, known as the “lungomare”, links the coastline as far as Viareggio. A cycle path connects Marina di Massa with Forte dei Marmi. Some historic bathing structures, called “Bagni”, can still be found in the central area, along the pier (“Pontile”) that was once the Cuturi loading dock. These date back over a century. The pier, which begins directly in front of the Hotel Tirreno, not only offers excellent views of the sea and its reflections of the mountains beyond, but is also a popular site with fans of fishing, especially during heavy seas, when they drop nets (called “bilance”). During the summer, boats depart the pier for trips towards nearby Liguria. A characteristic feature of the area – possibly unique along the entire Tuscan coastline – is that, unlike nearby rivieras, there are nearly 8.5 km. of artificial reefs perpendicular to the coast, that start from the beach and run for hundreds of metres into the sea, from 6-10 metres wide and approximately 200 metres apart. These were built to prevent coastal erosion.
