j’uni Studio de François Azambourg
2018
J'uni is a system which can be manipulated into multiple configurations to create a unified play space designed for a crèche in Jardin Luxemborg, Paris. It is simple but responds to a child’s mind by giving the choice and freedom to react, discover and interact with the object. Team members: Nivedetha Vedanayagam Client:
problem definition
While furniture scales down the space for children, they do not use it or classify it the same way that adults do. They tend to push, pull, jump, bite and explore the object.
initial ideas
Children are innately curious, and every new object they encounter is alien to them in color, texture and form.
An over-commodification of the play room and an abundance of toys push children to play individually and does not encourage interaction between children.
A child’s imagination has no bounds. A cardboard can enclose a whole new world. Simple objects allow for pretend play, without defining.
mock-ups
prototyping
user test
Having decided the model, we determined the dimensions. Then, we cut the cardboard.
Mock-up trial made out of cardboard to explore different variations.
Some original scaled cardboard models to test some conceptions.
As the next step, we glued 20 mm foam, set the dimensions on the fabric and, attached on the furniture.
With the prototypes we did the user testing at Crèche collective municipale Lobineau.

CONSTRUCTION
Basic shapes with large outlines have been used to facilitate easy understanding and create a connection to daily object such as chairs and arches. J’uni establishes a bridge between the adult and the child by acting as a play object for children, as well as furniture for both children and adults.
Although the form is simplistic, the possibilities are endless.
