LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

5 THINGS I LEARNED DURING THE MAKING OF THE MAGAZINE’S SUMMER ISSUE Sunscreen just keeps getting better and better. Proof I’ve been a product junkie since my early years: when I was a little girl, I’d scour the pages of every single beauty, fashion and news magazine my mom had lying around, and as the warmer months approached, I’d look forward to seeing advertisements and stories pertaining to sun products. This is probably because I was as pale then as I am today, and for another decade or so would hold onto hope that some magic potion—probably something like a tanning oil with an SPF no greater than 8— would one day enable me to lay out and get bronze without any repercussions. (It wouldn’t.) Obviously, a lot has changed since the 1980s, when “strong sun protection” likely meant a swipe of neon-hued zinc oxide. But even though reliable sun protection has been user-friendly for some time now, I feel like skin care companies get better every summer at rolling out dependable formulations that are luxurious, light and silky. There are tons of these formulations in this issue, and you can read all about them beginning on page 9. I am not above a “basics” brush-up. Look, I devote a great deal of my life (at least 40-50 hours a week, if anyone’s counting) to feeding my curiosity on beauty’s best practices. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot. And I managed to learn a thing or two when putting together this issue’s Basics feature, which starts on page 26. French women have the right ideas when it comes to a lot of things. It’s not just effortlessly chic fashion I’m talking about, either—when it comes to skin care and looking gorgeous in general, they’re pretty much genius. I compiled some of my favorite bits of French beauty wisdom on page 60, and even if you learn nothing new in reading them, I hope you’re pleasantly reminded that a little joie de vivre goes a long way. And with that in mind… All magazines should probably ease up a bit when it comes to retouching. This is the second issue in which we’ve forgone it entirely, and I think the images of models you’ll see as you flip through the book speak for themselves. The right products and practices lend themselves to a good look, and flaws are a fact of life. Rather than hide them, shouldn’t we just try to embrace them?

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO SUN PROTECTION

Here at DermStore, we preach it ad nauseum: you need to be smart about the sun. In case you need a refresher on the most vital of skin care tasks, we’ve put together a comprehensive primer. EDITOR: ELIZABETH FRANZ

Advice from a Professional

sun care Contains powerful UV protectors and an ancient mineral clay that lavishes calming nutrients onto your skin for a beautiful finish and reliable sun defense. jane iredale Powder-Me SPF SPF 30 Dry Sunscreen – Golden ID 41369 $45.50 (0.62 oz.)

Straightforward tips from New York City dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe. CHOOSE BROAD SPECTRUM UVB rays cause sunburns and are more prevalent during the summer. UVA rays cause skin cancer, along with a laundry list of visible signs of aging. Needless to say, you need protection from all of the above. “I always recommend looking for a sunscreen that says the words ‘broad spectrum,’ which means it covers both UVA and UVB rays,” says Dr. Bowe.

CHOOSE YOUR PROTECTION ACCORDINGLY—AND DON’T FORGET TO REAPPLY We’re all about playing it safe, which is why we tend to use SPF 30 or higher on our face every day of the year, without fail. (We can’t help but exercise extreme caution in this regard.) As for how low it’s okay to go during the summer, SPF 15 works—if you’re not going to be outdoors but will be driving a car or working in an office. “UVA rays can actually penetrate window glass,” Dr. Bowe pointed out. Going to be outside? “Opt for an SPF over 30 and reapply every two hours,” she advised. “If you sweat or swim, you may need to reapply even more often than that.”

KNOW YOUR INGREDIENTS The good news? Thanks to cutting-edge formulations and supercharged ingredients, today’s sunscreen products prove far more effective than what was available 20 years ago. The not-so-great news is that it’s not always easy to navigate their complicated labels. Fortunately, it’s simpler than it seems. “I recommend either buying a sunscreen that contains antioxidants, or applying an antioxidant serum prior to applying a sunscreen. The antioxidants boost the efficacy and protection that the sunscreen provides,” Dr. Bowe recommended. Even more important than antioxidants, of course, are the active ingredients that actually work to provide protection. “An ideal sunscreen usually combines several different active chemical and physical sunscreen ingredients in order to provide the best broad-spectrum protection,” she continued. “In fact, if a sunscreen contains less than three ingredients, you are probably not getting a full range of protection.”

BE SMART Do you love AHAs, retinoids and skin-brighteners like kojic acid and hydroquinone for their youth-bestowing capabilities? We’re right there with you—which is why we must remind you that these ingredients are notorious for increasing sun-sensitivity. “Certain ingredients can thin the outer layer of the skin, and consequently make it a bit more sensitive to the sun,” Dr. Bowe explained. “In my opinion, you should simply use more sunscreen over the summer months, rather than less of any given product.”

Thanks to hyaluronic acid, Elta MD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 helps to plump your skin and diminish dehydration lines as it protects. Elta MD Skincare UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 ID 10106 $26 (1.7 oz.)

Burn Notice

WHAT’S IN YOUR SUNSCREEN?

Is prevention the best solution? Well, yes. But despite our best efforts, sunburns can happen to the best of us. Here’s how to deal when disaster strikes.

HERE’S WHAT SHOULD BE. An ingredient to cover UVB (a PABA derivative, salicylate, and/or cinnamate such as octylmethoxycinnamate or cinoxate)

1

The first signs of sunburn usually appear in the form of pink or red skin that feels hot and tender to the touch. Do not wait until the pain gets intolerable. Get out of the sun right away before it gets worse.

A shorter-length UVA filter (benzophenones such as oxybenzone and sulisobenzone) An ingredient to cover the rest of the UVA spectrum (avobenzone, MexorylTM, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide)

Features UV protection, time-release hydrators, antioxidants and natural skin-soothers, working to correct sun damage as it restores your skin’s vitality. MDSolarSciences Daily Anti-Aging Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ID 49179 $68 (1.7 oz.)

2

Over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen can help ease the pain and reduce inflammation and swelling. Acetaminophen (like Tylenol) can also help with the pain, but it won’t help with the swelling.

3

Sunburns draw fluids to the skin’s surface and away from the rest of the body, so don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water—and watch out for signs of dehydration like dry lips, reduced urination, headaches, nausea and sleepiness.

4

Reach for an after-sun lotion that contains soothing and healing ingredients, like nutrient-rich thermal spring water. Slather on a thick layer and reapply as often as you’d like.

A unique combination of mineral and chemical sunscreens housed in an oil-free formula rich in skin-plumping hyaluronic acid. Glytone Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 40 ID 17318 $37 (4 fl. oz.)

Free of oil, fragrance, parabens and alcohol, this summertime staple combines the best physical sunscreen with the most skinfriendly antioxidants, making it one of our favorites. Replenix® Sheer Physical Sunscreen Cream SPF 50+ ID 46021 $29 (2 oz.)

With its calming and cooling properties, this summer essential delivers much-needed relief from sunburns while working to counteract damage. Avène After-Sun Repair Lotion ID 34239 $29 (13.52 fl. oz.)

CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN Protects your skin by using chemical filters to absorb UV light. Commonly used chemical filters include Avobenzone, Mexoryl SX and XL, Oxybenzone and Tinsorb M.

Eating For Optimal Protection

FREE RADICALS Unstable molecules that create damage by “stealing” electrons from healthy cells. Unprotected sun exposure generates free radicals.

MINERAL SUNSCREEN Often white in appearance, it works by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays with mineral filters zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are believed to be less irritating than chemical sunscreens because they don’t penetrate the skin. Also known as physical sunscreen.

form when exposed to sunlight.

NON-COMEDOGENIC Means the product will not clog your pores—an important factor if you have oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin.

SPF (SUN PROTECTION FACTOR) A measure of how much UV exposure it would take to burn protected skin (with sunscreen) relative to the amount required to burn unprotected skin (without sunscreen). For example, an SPF 15 will, in theory, allow you to stay in the sun 15 times longer than you could without protection. A higher SPF also blocks more rays— SPF 15, for example, will filter approximately 93% of UVB rays while SPF 30 can filter out about 97%.

We’re not saying that eating certain foods eliminates the need for diligence with regard to SPF, but we will stand by the idea that every little thing we do for ourselves helps—and Dr. Bowe agrees. “I am a firm believer that lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise and stress reduction, can all impact the skin and our immune system,” she said. “I recommend oral probiotics, foods rich in antioxidants (fruits, vegetables) and fish oil supplements that contain high levels of omega 3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA to help protect our skin from sun damage and help repair what damage is already done.”

UVB (ULTRAVIOLET B) Shorter than UVA rays, but more intense, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. UVB rays damage the skin’s more superficial epidermal layers, causing skin reddening and sunburn. They also play a key role in the development of skin cancer.

WATER-RESISTANT The ability of a sunscreen to stay on the skin—and maintain its SPF—after 40 to 80 minutes of water exposure. The FDA only allows the claim “water-resistant” on sunscreen labels, as “waterproof” is considered misleading.

sun care THE VITAMIN D DEBATE We’ve all heard the other side of the argument by now—the position that daily SPF actually does us more harm than good by stifling our ability to produce vitamin D, thus creating additional health risks. So, what do we believe? “Every hour someone in the United States dies of melanoma. Why not wear an SPF 30 sunscreen every day, and just take vitamin D as a supplement? I know I do,” said board-certified dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman, who authored the book Skin Rules and also works as an assistant professor of dermatology at NYC’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine. As for the idea that sun exposure is really the only way, it turns out that’s a good plan if you reside in a very specific part of the world … and even then, it’s not foolproof. “It’s actually very difficult to get enough vitamin D from the sun, especially if you have olive skin

or are a person of color— the vitamin doesn’t get absorbed well. If you are fair, you really risk skin cancer,” she explained. “Studies on vitamin D absorption show that people near the equator, where the sun is strong, can get enough vitamin D from the sun. But, if you needed a lot of iron, you would take a supplement. You wouldn’t eat pounds of meat every day and elevate your cholesterol. This is similar in that you’d have to spend so much time outdoors without sunscreen, you would damage your skin and up your risk of skin cancer,” she continued. “Since there is a safe and effective way to get vitamin D without the sun, I never really understand why this is a controversy.” Adds board-certified dermatologist Dr. Cynthia Bailey: “Any sun exposure leads to the cascade of collagen breakdown that leads to wrinkles, skin thinning and sagging. When you use the sun and your skin as a vitamin D factory, you’re walking an invisible, but fine line and you have no way to gauge what you’re doing. However, you do know you’re making wrinkles. You’re simply better off taking supplements and seeing your doctor to get your vitamin D levels measured from time to time.” - ELIZABETH FRANZ

MISSION: BIKINI BODY Got a month? Then you’ve got time to make some healthy lifestyle changes sure to help you feel confident and sexy when it comes time to throw on a bathing suit. Who knows—you might just decide they’re changes you’d like to keep for good.

THE PLAN When it comes to getting fit, hard work is everything—and while squeezing in treadmill time 3-4 times a week is essential to your health and fitness, you’re going to have to kick it up a notch to see results in a month. If you can commit to getting in a workout six days a week for four weeks, you’re golden. (Remember: one rest day is absolutely essential!) But first, check in with your doctor. “Make sure you’re physically well before committing to any workout regimen,” advises Beth Shaw, founder of YogaFit. “If you are not in any type of shape, ease into it and listen to your body.” And, make sure to mix things up accordingly—workout variance not only fosters optimal results, but reduces the risk for injury, too. “Don’t do the same exercises every day,” Shaw warns. “If you’re constantly creating tears by training the same muscles, you are not allowing your muscles time to repair the tears and build strength.”

THE WORKOUT We get it: when it comes to exercise, getting to the gym in the first place is practically half the battle. Just remember, when you get there, you’ll be glad you did. Also, keep in mind that not every visit needs to entail a grueling two-hour regimen. (We find that the comforting thought of a nice, quick, it’ll-be-over-before-you-know-it sweat session serves as great motivation just to go and be done with it.) Even better? No matter how much or how little time you’re working with, you’ve got time to make an impact. Got an hour? Try 30 minutes of interval training for cardio—then spend 20 minutes on strength training and 10 minutes stretching. If you’ve only 30 minutes to spare, cut the cardio portion down to 15 minutes, hit the weights for 10, and stretch for five. On a serious time crunch? Don’t dwell on it—life, after all, happens, and ironically it seems to happen more frequently during the summer, when we’re all on a mission to be our most svelte selves. “If you can find 10 minutes in your schedule, you can do some quick exercises at home that don’t require any equipment, like pushups, sit-ups, planks and wall squats,” says Paulette Lambert, director of nutrition at California Health and Longevity Institute. We can’t preach it enough: even a little movement is better than none at all.

LOAD UP ON WATER

EATING CLEAN Once you get your workout plan in check, you’ll want to make sure your eating habits aren’t getting in the way of your objectives. Here, some simple pointers.

First things first: as soon as you wake up in the morning, the first thing that should touch your lips is a tall glass of water. “Water awakens our internal organs, stimulating digestion and elimination of toxins,” explains Shaw. “It also hydrates us after eight hours of dehydration.” In addition to that, drinking the right amount of water will help to raise the metabolism, detoxify the body and (yes!) curb cravings, further empowering you to eat less of the bad stuff and shed unwanted weight faster. But how much water should we really consume? Most experts believe that on the average, a person should get six to eight glasses of water a day—but this figure can vary. “Eight glasses of fluid is adequate under normal conditions, but with a high level of exercise and life in a warm climate, I recommend getting 24 ounces per hour,” suggests Lambert.

DITCH THE BAD STUFF You’ve likely heard before that fitness begins in the kitchen. As much as we love a good workout, we agree with this sentiment—and feel that it’s just as much about eliminating slim-down saboteurs as it is choosing the right foods. Of course, there’s the obvious: foods with added sugars, like desserts, refined carbs like white bread, and alcohol. Consider also cutting out dairy products like cheese and milk, processed food (it almost always contains alarmingly high levels of sodium) and gluten. “All of these induce water retention, and you don’t want that when you’re preparing for bathing suit season,” points out life coach Carol Whitaker. While you’re at it, clear your kitchen of anything containing high fructose corn syrup, if you haven’t

NOT JUST FOR PREGNANCY: MIO You don’t have to be expecting to expect amazing results from Mio, the new line from the skin care brand for pregnant women and new moms, Mama Mio (you know, the one that’s beloved by celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian for its range of stretch mark-easing, skin-tightening, whip-your-bodyback-in-shape solutions.) WHAT ABOUT ‘CHEAT’ DAYS? We can’t help it—we love the idea of a cheat day. However, the experts don’t all agree it’s a good practice. “I personally don’t believe in cheat days,” says New York-based nutrition expert Natalie Thomas-Oliviera. “Eating healthy doesn’t have to be so miserable that you need to seek an escape by ‘cheating.’ Besides, spending a day eating anything and everything will probably undo all the progress you’ve made during the week.” Shaw agrees—especially if you’re looking to see results in a 30-day window. “You’re simply not allowed to have a cheat day in a 30-day boot camp,” she says. “You should always take one day off from exercise every week, but you shouldn’t binge on junk food.” On the other hand, some argue that cheat days are fine for maintaining motivation—as long as they’re not completely out of hand. “I refer to ‘cheat’ days as ‘treat’ days, and I think they can be highly beneficial for your body and mind,” says Whitaker. “But rather than dedicating a day to eating carelessly, I suggest you choose one day out of the week to have your favorite dessert or meal.” Lambert agrees, suggesting you think of the “cheating” as controlled indulgence. “Total deprivation never works— you’ll end up feeling deprived and will eventually binge,” she says. “Allow yourself a limited amount of ‘permissible indulgence’ each week—say about 400-500 calories—that you can ‘spend’ as you desire.”

IS RED WINE REALLY HEALTHY? First, some not-so-great news: researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, after studying 783 people in the Chianti region of Italy for 15 years, have concluded that a diet rich in the antioxidant resveratrol (you know, the one we thought rendered red wine and dark chocolate health-conscious indulgences) does not reduce deaths, cardiovascular disease or cancer. “The thinking was that certain foods are good for you because they contain resveratrol. We didn’t find that at all,” said Richard D. Semba, M.D., a professor who helmed the study. The good news? Even if researchers don’t have a definitive answer as to why, Semba says that red wine, chocolate and berries do reduce inflammation in some people, and they also appear to protect the heart—resveratrol just isn’t the reason. - ELIZABETH FRANZ

SUGAR & YO U R S K I N :

THE BITTER TRUTH BY ELIZABETH FRANZ

Given the choice between a cheeseburger and a chocolate bar, my decision will vary on a day to day basis. But until recently, my admittedly skewed rationale would have resulted in a guiltier conscience over the latter, and that’s due to fat content. The burger, assuming it’s decked out to my liking, is going to ring in at around 40 grams. The candy? Right around 12. If I’m not being clear enough, I know very well that neither accounts for a wise option. But I came of age in the 90s, and my brain is hardwired to fear fat. Armed with knowledge of a seldom-discussed A remedy for mature skin phenomenon scientists call to diminish dark circles, glycation, I’m now able to puffiness and the effects remind myself—most of the of glycation. SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex time, anyway—that a sweet ID 20344 $91 (0.5 oz.) treat is a decidedly bad eat for a number of reasons. It’s not that a bag of jelly beans is going to cancel out the hours I’ve put in on the treadmill or at the ballet barre, though it’s not granting me any favors in that regard, by any means. It’s that sugary indulgences, with a lot of help from diabetes research, have been found to speed up skin aging, contributing to wrinkles, brown spots, yellowing skin, and sagging, among other unsavory consequences.

GLYCATION, EXPLAINED So, the short story is that sugar causes glycation, and glycation causes skin aging. But how? I asked a dermatologist for a simple explanation. “Glycation

22

SHOP BY PHONE 24/7 1-800-213-DERM (3376)

is when sugar binds to other molecules in your body, such as protein and lipids,” said New York-based dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe. “These sugar by-products do two things: first, they stop your cells from functioning properly, and then, they create free radicals which can further damage your cells. As a result, the molecules in your skin that keep your complexion looking tight and young—namely, collagen and elastin—are no longer able to do their jobs. Furthermore, you become more vulnerable to environmental stressors such as UV light, pollution and cigarette smoke.” The sugar by-products to which Dr. Bowe refers? Those are called Advanced Glycation End Products— AGEs, for short. Appropriately enough, the more of them you acquire, the older you’ll get—in more ways than one. “More AGEs mean the faster you’ll show signs of aging, both inside the body and on the surface, including your skin,” she continued.

THE WORST CULPRITS If you’re entertaining the wholly pessimistic notion that even healthy foods—like fruits—contain sugar, you’re sadly not too off-base. But before you dust off your Atkins diet book, remind yourself that fruit serves a number of valid nutritional purposes, and that high-glycemic foods and refined carbohydrates remain the biggest threats. “When you think of foods to avoid, think white bread, white pasta, chips, pretzels, dried fruits, cookies and cakes,” Dr. Bowe advsised. “These foods are quickly broken down in our guts and our blood subsequently surges with sugar, leading to a cascade of destruction. Try substituting these foods with low glycemic-index foods like multigrain bread, quinoa, barley, sweet potatoes, beans, veggies and lean proteins. I’m also a big believer in a diet that includes probiotics, omega-3s and antioxidant-rich foods.”

CAN A 3-DAY DIET CHANGE YOUR SKIN?

BlushTV Host Heidi tried it—see how it worked for her! dermstore.com/threedaydiet

COLDPRESSED JUICE— A BOLDFACED LIE? Think that beet and carrot mix you’re chugging as a meal replacement constitutes smart eating? Not so fast. While they can be rich in vitamins and nutrients, cold-pressed juices— the very concoctions that are enjoying a major moment in the spotlight as the “healthy” way to get your veggies—lack one very important element in any diet, and that’s fiber. Without fiber, your body will absorb fructose more easily. And that can lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar … the very same spike that tips off the “cascade of destruction” Dr. Bowe elaborated upon in explaining glycation. Our thoughts? If you love coldpressed juice, well, there are certainly worse things you could be into. A green juice on an empty stomach in the morning is one thing, but subjecting yourself to a threeday cleanse during which no solid foods are consumed? This will likely come as a huge relief: it’s just better not to go there.

GRILLED SALMON WITH ROASTED VEGETABLES SALMON 1 lb. salmon fillets (serves 2) 4 cloves minced garlic 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup soy sauce

KALE CHIPS 1 large head of kale, washed and dried 2 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt to sprinkle Cut the ribs from the kale and discard. Tear the kale into 1½ inch pieces. Put on a baking sheet and toss with olive oil and salt. Bake until crisp about 20-25 minutes. Turn the leaves halfway through. Cool.

LEAFY GREENS PASTA 12 ounces whole grain penne pasta 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley 1 teaspoon lemon zest 3 garlic cloves, minced 10 cups of mixed greens, loosely chopped (I use spinach, kale, mustard greens and collard greens)

Place salmon fillets, garlic, olive oil and soy sauce in ziplock bag and toss to coat. Let sit while preparing vegetables.

VEGETABLES 1 sweet potato, peeled and cubed 2 carrots, peeled and cut in 1 inch pieces 1 red or purple potato cut into chunks, not peeled 10-12 brussed sprouts cut in half 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into 1 inch pieces 3-4 cloves minced garlic 2 tablespoons olive oil Sea salt and pepper to taste Place washed and cut vegetables and garlic onto a baking sheet. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes or until desired tenderness. To cook salmon: Take a large piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and fold up the edges to make a “grill pan.” Place the salmon and juices in the foil and grill on the BBQ for about 6 minutes, 3 on each side. Serve together.

1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the greens and cook until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Using a large slotted spoon, transfer greens to a colander to drain. Re-boil the same water and add pasta. Cook until desired tenderness, stirring occasionally. Drain pasta but save ½ cup of the pasta water. Return pasta to the pot, add the greens and three tablespoons of olive oil and toss. Stir in feta, olives and reserved cooking liquid, then add salt and pepper to taste. Mix the parsley, lemon zest and garlic in a small bowl, then add to pasta. Toss again while adding the other three tablespoons of olive oil.

BERRY SMOOTHIE 8 ounces almond milk 1 cup spinach 1 cup kale 1 cup seasonal berries of your choice 1 teaspoon chia seeds 1 tablespoon unsweetened coconut flakes Put all ingredients in a blender and blend away!

skin care WASHING YOUR FACE… ARE YOU DOING IT WRONG? It’s a task that seems simple enough, but even we managed to learn a thing or two on doing it right when we sat down with celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas at her Fifth Avenue clinic. Here’s what you need to know.

JOANNA VARGAS ON HOW TO WASH YOUR FACE

MISTAKE # 1: SKIPPING IT AT NIGHT

Watch the video to hear it straight from the pro herself! dermstore.com/howtowash

That you need to remove your makeup and sweep away other impurities the day’s brought on before you hit the pillow isn’t news to you. But when you keep in mind that your skin is better enabled to repair itself when you cleanse properly, you’ll take the task more seriously, do a better job, and wind up with prettier skin.

MISTAKE #2: FOCUSING ON A SINGLE SPOT “You want to make sure you work your cleanser in all over the face,” Vargas says. “You don’t want to start working on just one spot on the skin.” With that in mind, commonly overlooked areas include the neck and the top of the forehead—be sure you’re not missing them.

BEYOND THE BASICS: LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

MISTAKE #3: NOT UTILIZING THE POWER OF MOTION “Lather, rinse, repeat” doesn’t adequately describe what you should be doing when you cleanse your complexion. According to Vargas, those with oily, puffy or breakout-prone skin should use downward circular motions. “But if your skin is dry, ashy, lifelesslooking or if it just doesn’t glow, you want to do it in an upward motion,” she explained.

MISTAKE #4: USING A BACTERIA-LADEN TOWEL Lest you negate all the effort you just made, make sure you’re not reaching for a damp, days-old towel when it comes time to dry your face—you’ll merely contaminate your otherwise clean skin with bacteria. And, if you’re acne-prone, Vargas suggests you use a paper towel. “You don’t have to be so vigilant about it if your skin is dry,” she clarified. “Just make sure you change it every few days.” -ELIZABETH FRANZ

Combines 4.7% free glycolic acid with a blend of conditioners and moisturizers to cleanse and exfoliate without leaving your skin dry. Glytone Mild Gel Wash ID 363 $30 (6.7 fl. oz.)

Unless your skin falls into that elusive “normal” category, chances are you struggle at least a little with dryness, breakouts, or puffiness—or maybe even all of the above. Using the right products is, of course, paramount, but you can also ease these issues with a technique known as lymphatic drainage massage—an art at which Joanna Vargas is an expert. To learn how to make lymphatic drainage a part of your regimen at home, watch the video at dermstore.com/ lymphatic

skin care EXFOLIATION 101 Let’s start with why we need to exfoliate. “The consistent removal of dead skin cells visibly brightens, smooths and reduces the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines,” says Dr. Gary Goldfaden, MD, the dermatologist behind skin care brand Goldfaden MD. “When we exfoliate, we enable the skin to absorb treatment products much more effectively, which increases their overall benefit.” Any questions?

DON’T SKIP THE SPF If you think your acne gets worse when the mercury rises, you could be onto something. “Sun, heat and humidity can cause oil glands to be overactive, which can lead to acne breakouts,” says board-certified dermatologic surgeon and associate at Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Dendy Engelman. And before you even think of skipping the sunscreen in hopes that a tan or a burn will help to dry you out, remember—the long-term effects of the sun simply aren’t worth it! Instead, opt for an oil-free broadspectrum sun protectant that’s non-comedogenic. You won’t break out because of one of these products, but you will protect your skin and your health. Win-win.

“Benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient commonly found in acne treatments, has a one to three-hour working time, and any cream that comes in contact with it before it has completed its work will likely inhibit it from working properly,” explains acne specialist Ashley Wiley. “It’s best to wait at least an hour before applying moisturizer after you use an acne treatment.”

DON’T FORGET THE BASICS Washing your face twice daily? You know that’s a must. But don’t forget that seemingly minor tasks like washing your makeup brushes once a week, making it a point to keep your hands off your face, and changing your pillowcase regularly will keep additional bacteria off your face, in turn bolstering your best acne-fighting efforts. - ELIZABETH FRANZ

ACID TIP As a skin care buff, you’re practically an expert on the topic of glycolic acid—the old standby that dermatologists and estheticians alike love for its ability to slough away dull, dead skin, revving up cell turnover and cultivating youthful radiance in the process. But are you up on its lesser-sung cousin, mandelic acid? How about malic acid? The ingredients that give M2’s High Potency Skin Refinish its superpowers, mandelic and malic acids work together in perfect, non-irritating harmony to deliver serious youth-enhancing results. The secret’s in their molecular structure, which is slightly larger than that of other commonly used alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as the aforementioned glycolic. This equates to slower, steadier penetration, and while that might sound like a load of chemistry jargon that means nothing in the real world, it’s actually what renders this product perfect for those who want to reap the collagen-promoting benefits of AHAs but have had a hard time tolerating other formulations. ID 18823 $49.98 (1.7 fl. oz.)

PRIME TIME WHY KINARA

WEIGHTLESS INFUSION IS THE BEST PRODUCT YOU NEVER KNEW YOU WERE MISSING It’s one of the most common makeup questions we receive: what’s the point of primer? Let’s start with a beauty analogy. Primers are— hear us out, please—a little bit like top-notch professional hair color. (Or, in a word, priceless.) Why? Well, much like balayage that’s been painstakingly painted on by the skilled, artful hands of an expert, you couldn’t possibly know all the favors a primer will do for you until you treat yourself. Just like going from box dye to the services of a five-star colorist will elevate your hair in ways you never dreamed possible, adding the right premakeup product into your beauty regimen will show you a whole new world of smoother, more youthful skin, replete with invisible pores and the freedom that comes along with eliminating the need for frequent touchups. And, when the product of choice happens to be a serum/primer hybrid, the argument as to why? becomes even simpler.

Kinara’s Weightless Infusion—both a serum and a gel primer—creates the soft, refined canvas that any great primer does. That’s its immediate benefit. In the long term, however, it poses all the perks you’d expect of a potent serum: brighter skin, thanks to niacinamide and alpha arbutin, tighter skin on account of biofermented resveratrol and collagen-stimulating peptides, and—just as age-defying—a healthy glow, which is fostered by powerful antioxidants. Don’t think of it as an extra step—think of it as a convenient means in which to take an existing one to the next level. ID 48133 $80 (1 fl. oz.)

skin care SEEING SPOTS: THE COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH Are you employing a one-step approach to brighter, spot-free skin? Stop right there. A lightening product—while certainly vital— isn’t going to give you the results you’re after on its own. In actuality, these formulations work best as part of a team—a team for which sunscreen is, indisputably, the most valuable player. (You’re simply spinning your wheels if your bright skin initiatives don’t include a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or more, worn every single day.) The other all stars? Antioxidants, including resveratrol and vitamin C. (These boost the efficacy of your sun protection and also work to brighten skin over time.) Finally, if your skin can take it, reach for retinol. “Retinol works great for fine lines and wrinkles, but also improves skin quality and texture while fading pigment spots,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Baxt. -ELIZABETH FRANZ

THESE DAYS, IT NO LONGER HAS TO BE EASY TO PINPOINT WHO GOT WHAT “DONE.” Thanks to a new crop of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, everyone can achieve a more youthful appearance without pain, downtime or overdone results. “People want non-surgical options—they want enhancements, not overhauls,” says Los Angeles-based board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Grant Stevens. “They want to look younger and feel better with less anesthesia, no recovery time, no scarring and no pain. They want to put off surgical methods for at least a decade more, and that’s what we’re doing.” Here, how it’s being done.

PROBLEM: CROW’S FEET, SMILE LINES AND LIP LINES SOLUTION: Belotero Balance®, An FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler

“I prefer this treatment for smaller lines—it looks more natural, and it doesn’t cause that dreaded Tyndall effect.” – Dr. Stevens Why it’s great: Hyaluronic acid is completely natural—in fact, it

exists naturally in your skin! Thanks to the use of an extra-fine needle, the process is virtually painless. And, as Dr. Stevens points out, it doesn’t create any bluish marks (also known as the Tyndall effect). Finally, there’s little downtime, if any, and the results last for at least six months.

PROBLEM: FOREHEAD CREASES AND NASOLABIAL FOLDS SOLUTION: Xeomin®, An FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A that works by blocking the transmission of signals from nerves to muscles, causing the muscle to relax

“I call this the ‘the naked Botox®’ because it’s pure—it doesn’t have accessory proteins. It’s great for patients who did not respond well to Botox®.” – Dr. Stevens Why it’s great: In addition to having gone through

a thorough purification process to remove the accessory proteins Dr. Stevens brings up, this one’s slightly less expensive than Botox®.

Allows skin to breathe as it covers imperfections and creates a flawless look, which is why dermatologists approve of its use on sensitive, problematic and postprocedural skin. Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation – Beige ID 39433 $66 (0.51 oz.)

PROBLEM: DEEP FACIAL WRINKLES, SAGGING CHEEKS AND AGING HANDS SOLUTION: Radiesse®, An FDA-approved calcium-based filler that instantly replenishes lost volume under the skin

“This heavier filler is best for deeper folds, and for providing structure to your skin. Overall, it enhances your skin’s texture and facial contour.” – Dr. Stevens Why it’s great: For starters, the results can last up to a year.

What’s more, it’s statistically more effective at smoothing out lines and wrinkles than hyaluronic-based fillers. Finally, it actually encourages your body to create more collagen and in turn plump the skin naturally.

PROBLEM: DARK SPOTS AND SCARS SOLUTION: Fraxel®, A fractional laser treatment that uses thousands of microscopic laser columns to treat a fraction of the skin at a time without affecting the surrounding tissue

“The latest, state-of-the-art treatment to get rid of brown spots is Fraxel®. There’s no anesthesia, it’s easy, it’s inexpensive, and it works on everybody.” –Dr. Stevens Why it’s great: Because it treats only targeted areas, it offers focused

(not to mention, dramatic) results without any downtime—and if you keep up on your regimen, its results in the way of clearing pigmentation issues will last indefinitely. -GRACEE TOLENTINO

EDITOR’S TIP:

POST-PROCEDURE FOUNDATION Unless you’ve got some sort of life arrangement that allows you to hole up in your house for days on end, facial procedures that entail “downtime”—chemical peels come to mind—likely aren’t the most appealing. After all, most of us don’t even want to come into the office or run our errands sans makeup ... let alone with red, inflamed skin that’s too vulnerable to tolerate it. Enter Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation, a formula dermatologists and plastic surgeons not only approve for use on post-procedure skin, but recommend. “It’s nonirritating on delicate, compromised skin, and actually helps to promote new cell growth, which is a great combination post-procedure,” explained board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ashley Magovern, DermStore’s medical director. I tried it post-peel myself, and loved the way it made my redness disappear. I’ve also found that it’s great for everyday use. “It’s light enough to give a very natural look, but at the same time offers great coverage to hide imperfections, and it won’t cause breakouts,” Dr. Magovern continued. “We find that most people that try it end up wearing it all the time. I do.” -ELIZABETH FRANZ

THE LATEST MUST FOR BRIDES-TO-BE…

THE HAND LIFT?

I’m getting married in October, and I’ll be honest: I’m thinking long and hard about what kind of cosmetic dermatology procedures in which I’ll be partaking before the day arrives. It’s not that I want to look different than what I look like today—it’s that I want to look like my prettiest, most refreshed self. What I’ve spent zero time thinking about since my fiancé asked me to be his wife is the condition of my hands, which, while not horrible, is not exactly perfect. (You know what they say: you can always tell a woman’s age by her hands.) Embarrassingly enough, my

“engagement selfies” depict a two week-old manicure—I genuinely didn’t see it coming! —and the lines and wrinkles I’d imagine just about anyone my age has. To me, they’re nothing major, but judging by the latest trend in bridal beautification—the “hand lift”—they’re bothersome to others. Considering it’s just an injection of hyaluronic acid fillers to smooth things out, the hand lift is admittedly not as scary as it sounds, but with a price tag upwards of $1000, it’s not exactly inviting. The long and short of it: if I could go back and change the way my hands looked the day I got engaged and snapped ring photos with my phone, I’d make sure I was sporting a fresh manicure. Would I make sure I’d also made my way over to the dermatologist for some hand fillers? Not a chance. -ELIZABETH FRANZ WWW.DERMSTORE.COM

HOW IS THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT IMPACTING THE PLASTIC SURGERY INDUSTRY? BY DR. GARY MOTYKIE, M.D., F.A.C.S.

With the passing of the Affordable Care Act and its inevitable impact on insurance reimbursement guidelines, many doctors are looking to perform elective cosmetic surgery in order to supplement their diminishing income. Since the origins of plastic surgery as a specialty, there have only been 8,000 or so doctors that have actually become board-certified plastic surgeons. Today, however, you will find everyone from podiatrists to brain surgeons offering cosmetic treatments such as Botox®, injectables, lasers and even plastic surgery. Although this does not seem to make any intellectual or legal sense, it is happening every day, all over the world. Unfortunately, some doctors are choosing dollar signs over vital signs by accepting payment for procedures they may not have been properly trained to perform. The road to becoming an actual board-certified plastic surgeon is a long, hard one that takes a great deal of sacrifice, dedication and intelligence. It is a journey that traditionally takes 14-15 years of schooling as well as an additional three to five years in private practice to complete. The majority of other medical specialties literally cut corners, skip surgical residency and avoid board-certification in order to reduce the number of years spent in training. These savings can then be passed onto you as a lower price that comes along with a less qualified, less trained surgeon. These doctors seem to be more concerned with making money than with patient safety, health and superior outcomes. People tend to want a quick fix in America—simply look around online and you will find deal after deal for cosmetic surgery procedures. But cutting a deal before going under the knife could end up costing you twice as much to fix in the end. Just remember, don’t bargain shop for parachutes or plastic surgery, or you may be left emotionally, financially and physically scarred for life. Dr. Motykie is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills, California.

beauty THE FUTURE OF COSMETICS: 3D PRINTING? Even if you weren’t following the happenings at May’s TechCrunch Disrupt 2014 conference in New York, you probably heard about Mink, the 3D printer that’s going to revolutionize the cosmetics industry by enabling people to print makeup from the comforts of home. We have to admit—in theory, it’s pretty genius. It works just like an inkjet printer, it requires no additional software, and it’s slated to retail at just $300. “It can take any image and instantly transform it into a wearable color cosmetic,” Mink’s founder and inventor Grace Choi, a Harvard Business School alum, explained at the forum. But can it really take the place of the experts who formulate our beloved lipsticks, eyeshadows, foundations and blushes? “They (cosmetics companies) make a lot of money on a whole lot of BS, and they do this by charging a huge premium on one thing that technology provides for free,” Choi asserted. “And that one thing is color.” But … is color really the one thing that makes a great makeup item? What about texture, staying power, quality ingredients and the right levels of pigmentation? (These are just a handful of characteristics that come to mind when we think of what makes our favorites such commodities.) If you ask us, color is important, but it’s merely part of the equation. While we admire Choi’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire to innovate, we’re not completely sold on this one. –ELIZABETH FRANZ

Still think of bold, punchy eye makeup as a 1980s relic that should stay in the past? Maybe you’re just going about it wrong. There’s a place in the modern world—for women of all ages, might we add!—for brightly hued maquillage. If you abide by a few simple rules.

OILY SKIN ESSENTIAL: A MATTIFYING SOLUTION

Those of us with oily complexions tend to dread the prospect of makeup on a hot summer day—throw heat and humidity in the mix with our own natural sheen, and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. The wonders that are mattifying products—solutions formulated to absorb excess sebum, putting a stop to shine before it starts and enabling makeup to stay put—prove our saving grace, summer after summer.

RULE #1: START WITH FL AWLESS SKIN By flawless, we mean nice, natural, healthy-looking skin. Avoid anything that’s too dewy—it’ll look forced. Similarly, don’t pile on the powder. You don’t want to look too “done.”

RULE #2: KEEP THE COLOR CONFINED A single pop of color goes a long way, and while a clean swipe of turquoise liner can look très chic, a turquoise lid plus a matching turquoise dress? That’s going overboard.

RULE #3: HAVE A PL AN We actually like to think of the color wheel when we wear bright makeup, and abide by the rule of opposites. For example, the aforementioned turquoise eye makeup looks great against a coral top, and conversely, a dress in any shade of blue is practically begging to be worn with a coral lip. Wearing lime green? Try a fuchsia-colored lip gloss.

RULE # 4: PUT IT IN NEUTR AL Going with a bold eye? Don’t be afraid to warm up your complexion with some bronzer, just save the bright blush for another day—and use a subtle, your-lips-but-better sort of lip gloss. (Skip the liner.) Putting the emphasis on your lips? Well-groomed brows, a little blush and mascara are really the only other things you’ll need.

Featuring three shimmery shades of brown, gold and champagne to create multiple summer-perfect looks. jane iredale PurePressed Eye Shadow Triple – Golden Girl ID 57830 $28 (0.1 oz.)

STEP ONE: CREATE THE PERFECT CANVAS Sweep on a primer before applying SPF-infused mineral foundation to achieve a complexion that’s smooth, eventoned and ready for color—find everything you need plus setting mist in jane iredale’s Starter Kit.

With a lip stain on one end and a lip gloss on the other, this tried-and-true staple is as convenient as it is essential. jane iredale Lip Fixation – Craze ID 57832 $30 (0.2 fl. oz)

STEP TWO: GET A HEALTHY GLOW For this look, celebrity makeup artist Michal Cohen used jane iredale’s Rose Dawn Bronzer, which offers shades ranging from pink to chocolate for easy bronzing and blushing. Topped off with In Touch Highlighter in Comfort, it’s just the way to accentuate your bone structure while infusing your look with summery youthfulness.

STEP 3: DEFINE YOUR EYES

$77 VALUE

For its ability to flatter all skin tones and eye colors, we love golden-brown and champagne-hued eyeshadows—but find them especially indispensable during the summer for the way they accentuate a (faux, of course) tan. Use the darkest shade in jane iredale’s Triple Eye Shadow in Golden Girl on the outer corners of your eyes, and the other two shades to blend. Top of off with Jelly Jar Eyeliner in Brown.

STEP 4: PUT ON LIP COLOR THAT’S BUILT TO LAST The easiest way to make lip color stay put is to use a stain, but the most flattering finish—especially for mature lips— tends to entail a bit of sheen. That’s why we favor jane iredale’s Lip Fixation Duo in Craze. One end provides a long-lasting wash of color and the other, a gorgeous golden gloss. It’s just the thing to complete your clean, classic look!

All the essentials for a flawless face—primer, two types of foundation, an applicator brush and setting spray—in a super chic bag you can easily stash in your purse. jane iredale Starter Kit – Medium Light ID 57131 $55 (6 piece)

SELF TANNING TIPS There are certain things we all know about self-tanning: exfoliate beforehand, wear loose clothing afterward, don’t shower for at least eight hours. But with a little expert guidance, you can elevate your skills to the next level. We asked some beauty pros to tell us how. 1. ‘GUIDE COLOR’ IS YOUR FRIEND “Always pick a product that has instant color so you can see if you missed a spot right away,” urges Dera Enochson, founder of XEN-TAN (a line of self-tanning products you can shop at www.dermstore.com/xentan).

2. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND... Sounds super basic, but even the best of us need a reminder that this isn’t the step to rush. “You can’t blend too much,” Enochson pointed out. She suggests going about it in a circular motion.

6. WAX OFF, TAN ON… IN THAT ORDER “It’s important to get your waxing done before you apply self-tanner,” says Christine Haddad, spa director at Boston’s G2O Spa and Salon.

7. START FROM THE BOTTOM “Always start at the bottom of the legs and work your way up toward the shoulders,” Haddad says. “Save your arms and hands for last so that you don’t end up with extra color or patches.”

8. IF YOU’RE A BEGINNER, ALLOW TIME FOR A PRACTICE RUN “If you’ve never applied a self-tanner, the day before a big event is not the best time to try it,” confirms celebrity makeup artist Amanda Shackleton. “I’ve had a lot of clients show up blotchy from a bad self-tanning incident, and it’s very hard to cover.” Avoid a disaster by doing a practice run well in advance so that you can identify your ideal product and learn from any inevitable mistakes. -ELIZABETH FRANZ

3. ...AND CONSIDER USING A NYLON POWDER BRUSH TO DO SO “After you’ve applied self-tanner to the body, rub it in using circular motions with a nylon powder brush, which gives your tan a gorgeous, airbrushed effect,” says Scott Barnes, celebrity makeup artist.

4. DON’T WIND UP WITH A SPLOTCHY BACK “If you’re not a contortionist, you need help to do your back,” Enochson told us. And if you must go it alone, use her genius tip. “Take a one-and-ahalf-foot piece of plastic wrap and fold it lengthwise into a strip that’s two inches wide. Place some tanning lotion or mousse in the center of the strip. Holding the two ends, blend the product across the spot you can’t reach.”

5. MOISTURIZE OFTEN

GETTING IT DONE AT THE SALON? AVOID THE BOOTH AND GO STRAIGHT TO A PRO

“My advice would be to get a treatment from a professional instead of from a spray tan booth that many tanning salons offer,” says Amanda Gabbard, beauty pro at The Guerlain Spa at the Waldorf Astoria. “The professional will customize the tan according to your individual needs and monitor the shade much better than the booths.”

“Skin sheds when it dries out from the sun. The peeling can result in blotchy spots,” warns Haley Kulow, certified master esthetician. The solution, of course, is to slather on your favorite body lotion twice a day.

Flashy trends, by nature, aren’t meant to be long-lived. (Go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief: crazy nail art is pretty much over.) But when it comes to the quest for beauty’s most integral aspects—amazing skin, in particular—products that do what they say they will tend to garner perennial staying power. Such is what’s happening with BB cream, the multitasking skin savior that aims to do everything from protect your skin from the sun to provide hydration, ease dark spots and banish breakouts. BB cream (short for blemish base, blemish balm or beauty balm, depending on who you ask) has been a “thing” in Korea and Japan since the 1980s, but only in the past few years has it gained cult status over here in the States. Having hopped on the BB bandwagon early on, when some of the first formulations made their way out west, I’ve tried more of them than I can count—and I can honestly say that today’s crop includes timerefined formulations that are leagues better than their 2011 predecessors. While the early specimens very closely mimicked their Asian counterparts, offering a not-always-flattering greyish cast along with overly opaque coverage, the new class consists of genius formulations that glide on smoothly, providing believable coverage as they pull off a laundry list of skin-beautifying tasks— all while delivering serious broad-spectrum sun protection that’s crucial for summer. -ELIZABETH FRANZ

FACT: THE NAIL SALON YOU’VE ALWAYS THOUGHT TO BE A BASTION OF RELAXATION MAY NOT BE THAT AFTER ALL. According to experts, nail salons are notorious for housing fungus and bacteria, passed on from person to person through poorly sanitized pedicure tubs and contaminated instruments. “Many skin-related issues of the feet—like dry, cracked skin and fungus—can be attributed to dirty pedicure bowls and tools,” says celebrity nail artist and color curator for Dermelect, Elle Gerstein. “That’s why it’s extremely important to pay close attention to salon cleanliness before you soak your feet in.” The good news? You can keep your toes in near-perfect condition right at home and on your own—and without subjecting yourself to the dangers lurking in nail salons. Here, we asked Gerstein and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldfaden to give us a few tips on how to primp and prettify our feet safely at home.

#1 Sparitual Nail Lacquer – Emerald City $12 ID 23079

Essie Nail Color – Butler Please $8.50 ID 46330

According to Dr. Goldfaden, even tasks as simple as walking can make your feet stinky and bacteria-prone. “Wash your feet frequently. They accumulate dirt and sweat throughout the day, so it’s really important to wash them often to avoid odor and unwanted infections.”

#2 EXFOLIATE AND HYDRATE Essie Nail Color – Geranium $8.50 ID 35448

WARD OFF BACTERIA

Dr. Goldfaden also recommends exfoliating your feet at least once a week to allow them to absorb moisture more effectively. “Then, slather your feet with a heavy moisturizer and sleep in socks. Your feet will feel soft and supple in the morning,” he adds. Another way to scrub them clean? Gerstein suggests giving yourself a mini foot spa at the beach by mixing sand and cooling lotion and rubbing the mixture on your feet. WWW.DERMSTORE.COM

#3 NEVER CUT CALLUSES! “As much as possible, avoid cutting calluses with a razor,” warns Gerstein. “If you are suffering from calluses, the safest way to remove them is with a damp foot file.” However, if you must use a razor, Gerstein suggests following it up with the finest pedi-file to make sure the skin is smoothed out.

#4 PROTECT YOUR POLISH

Frequently exposing your nails to the sun, sand and chlorine can easily make your nail polish dull and yellowish. “If you know you’re going to be out in the sun or at the beach,” Gerstein offers, “apply a top coat with UV inhibitors to protect your polish’s shine and color.”

#5 CARE FOR YOUR CUTICLES Lastly, Gerstein suggests keeping a bottle of cuticle oil in your purse. “Cuticle oil is like an instant pedicure in a bottle,” says Gerstein. “It keeps your nails healthy and it’s perfect for days when you just want a quick refresher.” -GRACEE TOLENTINO

From Paris With LOVE

Say bonjour to France’s finest: beauty staples for every concern and secrets of the women whose carefree glamour and je ne se quoi are coveted around the globe. EDITOR: ELIZABETH FRANZ

FRENCH BEAUTY LESSON #1: SKIN CARE IS ABOUT WELL-BEING, NOT INDULGENCE “Even just a decade ago in America, an appointment scheduled with a professional esthetician was considered an indulgence,” remarked Katherine Tomasso, director of brand education for Yon-Ka Paris. “Yet today, skin care treatments are regarded as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. This mindset originated with the French—mothers in France will regularly take their young teens for professional skin care treatments. Continuing good skin care practices with each passing decade is the French norm.”

FRENCH BEAUTY LESSON #2: CONFIDENCE, HAPPINESS AND PERSONAL STYLE ARE THE KEYS There’s a reason French women have less of an apparent obsession with plastic surgery than American women, and it’s not needle phobia. “It’s my opinion that the French have a refined aesthetic—everyone knows about the French woman’s sense of style,” Tomasso said. “The confidence you gain by having your own unique style and being generally happy limits your desire to change yourself drastically.” The same goes for less drastic anti-aging tactics, like injectables. “Aren’t we done with volume abuse?” she wondered. “I’m sure the majority of French women regard filler as a crime, with women its victims. Perhaps too it’s that they don’t automatically associate youth with perfection.”

FRENCH BEAUTY LESSON #3: BEAUTY IS AN EXPERIENCE “French women tend to be drawn to natural and botanical products that offer results, efficiency and a beautiful aromatic experience each time they use their regimen,” Tomasso informed us. “And French woman have as many skin care products for the body as they do for the face—think bust, neck and décolleté treatments, or products for slenderizing and shaping the silhouette.” A 100% mineral sunscreen in a cream-to-powder compact foundation–promises both beautiful coverage and reliable protection. Avene High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50 – Beige ID 27555 $34 (0.35 oz.)

The number-one reason French women have beautiful skin? They use this soothing, mineralrich spritz like it’s, well, water. Avene Thermal Spring Water ID 6793 $18 (10.58 oz.)

A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE FRENCH BEAUTIES They just make being gorgeous look so easy.

beauty SUMMER READING: FRENCH WOMEN DON’T GET FACELIFTS BY MIREILLE GUILIANO You’ve no doubt heard of, or perhaps read French Women Don’t Get Fat, the book in which Mireille Guiliano sheds light on the seemingly effortless ways French women, well, stay thin. I recently enjoyed a sunny Sunday afternoon on my rooftop (slathered in SPF, obviously) with a glass of Rosé and Guiliano’s follow-up, French Women Don’t Get Facelifts. Here are some thoughts that stood out to me.

1 CLÉMENCE POÉSY

It’s not just the angelic, dewy skin and messy-yetpolished golden locks—it’s the slightly off-center, not-quite-conventional quality of this femme’s beauty that we admire.

Extreme hair color is great… if you’re extremely young. Having worn virtually every naturally occurring hair color on my head over the course of the last 15 years, I’ve come full circle … to a strawberry blonde hue that’s pretty close to what I had naturally as a child. My colorist, who also happens to be one of my best friends, thinks it’s the most flattering. I agree! If you do get your hair colored in a salon, it’s a great idea to bring in a photo from your childhood so that your colorist can customize the approach. Past your twenties, anything super dark, super light or super bright probably isn’t going to do you any favors.

Too much foundation is too much. Guiliano stands

MARION COTILLARD

The gaze, the glow, the always spot-on red carpet fashion … we love the way her look is reminiscent of an old-school screen siren.

by a less-is-more philosophy in many regards, but especially when it comes to face makeup. And while it certainly seems counterintuitive, it’s true: heavy face makeup tends to accentuate the very flaws it was meant to conceal. So focus on skin care and use a light hand.

3

We should eat more oysters. Twist my arm. Nothing much in the way of food makes me happier than a plate of raw oysters on the half shell, and, as it turns out, an oyster is one of the most potent beauty foods there is. Helping to ease the look of dark circles is just one beauty feat they’re purported to do, and if that’s not reason enough to order a half-dozen next time you’re out for a meal, I don’t know what is.

VANESSA PARADIS

Talk about owning a look: this woman’s name is practically synonymous with her signature center part—and that gap-toothed smile? In a Lauren Hutton sort of way, it simply works.

4

Find a lipstick that’s age-appropriate… and use it! American women, Giuliano points out, are all about dramatic smoky eyes, whereas French women favor lipstick as the go-to means of looking pulled together. (They believe a woman’s lips are her most sensual, alluring physical characteristic.) But lips, just like other parts of the face, develop lines and wrinkles over time. The solution need not entail injections—one simply needs to be realistic about what she’s working with, and know when it’s time to ditch the neon pinks and fire engine-reds in favor of an always-flattering rose hue or even a clear, plumping gloss.

5

AUDREY TAUTOU

hair style for decades at a time is probably a bad (read: boring) thing. On the other hand, should we gravitate toward hair trends that will inevitably go out of style just as quickly as they came in? Having a signature look—perfected through trial and error—is key to being chic. - ELIZABETH FRANZ

“Most people have some sort of natural wave,” said Ryan Richman, the celebrity hair stylist who created this perennially perfect summer look. (Actually, we’re known to rock beach waves no matter what the season.) “To enhance it, mist towel-dried hair with a beach spray and then divide it into two sections—a right and a left. Moving outward from the face, twist each half in large sections as you blow it completely dry. Then, to define your waves, wrap random sections of your hair with a wand or a curling iron.” This particular example, as you can see, includes a braid as a center part—but feel free to leave the waves be or add a braid or two elsewhere. “Any kind of braid with this wavy look is always nice,” he said.

How gorgeous is this sexy, voluminous 70s-inspired hair as a means of embracing humidity in style? To copy it, blow your wet hair dry using your favorite volumizing product—you can rough dry it upside down for even more volume. “Once it’s completely dry, use the smallest curling iron you can find, and wrap one-inch sections around the barrel, making sure to start at the root,” Richman advised. “Clip each section as you curl, let them cool, and then spray your entire head with hairspray. Let out each individual section and backcomb them.” That’s it!
