Welcome to the 14th City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival! During the May Bank Holiday weekend the Walled City will once again reverberate to the distinctive jazz rhythms echoing from theatres, bars, shopping centres, cafĂŠs, restaurants and right throughout the city streets! There is no other place to be this weekend. In 2015 we are delighted to shine the spotlight on the music at the heart of the festival by introducing our Jazz hub venues which will see The Playhouse and Bennigans Jazz Club play host to some of the biggest names in Jazz over the weekend with performances from Jazz Legends such as Charlie Wood and Dennis Rollins. Of course we have much more than Jazz at this festival and for those who simply love music there are some incredible acts on our music trail so grab a copy and go exploring the sounds of the city. We are delighted to have support from a number of key partners for 2015. We extend our thanks to Diageo, our title sponsor who bring more than just good Guinness to the festival and to the jazz enthusiasts who were a huge help in developing our programme for 2015, we give special thanks to Paul McIntyre and John Leighton. The hard work is done, all you need to do is swing by the city and join in our musical celebration of the music that unites the four corners of the world!

Speakeasy ◆ at the Playhouse
One of the highlights of the 2014 Festival is BACK! In a nod to the Gatsby era, don your finest 1920’s glad rags, shine up those strings of pearls and prepare for another exciting jazz experience straight from the Prohibition era. It’s the witching hour - the Cops ain’t about, or are they? You arrive at the Speakeasy... Do you know the Password? Cos you ain’t gettin’ in kid unless you do. The customer is granted access and transported back to the Prohibition era of 1929 and a Speakeasy like no other, with a high class clientele. Don’t tell no-one neither, cos the Mayor drinks here. A smokin’ hot atmosphere, a bootleg bottle and the dulcet tones of resident jazz artist Ella Fitzgerald seduces all with songs from the era. So come along, dress up and hang out in character, and hope there’s not a police raid on the hottest House of Blues in town!

JAZZ LEGENDS
Tom Harrison
Since graduating from the renowned
Trinity College of Music in 2012, Tom Harrison has performed and recorded with a host of internationally recognised jazz musicians in 12 countries, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the City of Derry Jazz Festival this year, when he performs in our two Jazz Hubs, Bennigans Bar and the Playhouse. With a number of different shows planned for over the festival, one we are really excited about is ‘Music of the Movies.’ The Film Music Project is a celebration of the work of the great composers of the silver screen. As an ensemble, the band explores behind the scenes of film, using the music as a springboard for composition/ improvisation just as has more traditionally been done with songs from the shows. Catch the show at the Playhouse on Saturday 2nd May.

Dennis Rollins’ Velocity Trio

Velocity Trio is a new venture for Rollins, a brilliant marriage of refined contemporary jazz arrangements with simmering grooves that appeals to multiple generations of jazz, funk and world music fans. Featuring Hammond organ virtuoso Ross Stanley and fiery drummer Pedro Segundo, their unique trombone-Hammond organ-drums line-up honours the jazz tradition while pushing it forward. Catch the show on Sunday 3rd May at Bennigans.
