The city will be taking centre stage on the 24th – 26th May 2013, as some of the most sensational names in the music industry will be part of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Derry~Londonderry. To host an event of this scale, Derry City Council has worked with BBC Radio 1 to minimise inconvenience to local residents and business. The following at a glance guide will provide you with the information you need to plan your journey and your weekend during the festivities. There are two concert locations within the environs of Ebrington with outdoor music planned for Ebrington Square and indoor music at The Venue.

Planning your journey if you are a Concert Ticket Holder

Queuing, entry and exit areas for Radio 1’s Ticket Holders For ticket holders you will be able to access Ebrington area via Queens Quay and St Columb’s Road. At the queuing areas of Queens Quay and St Columb’s Road stewards will be on duty to ensure that:

You will have your ticket checked in more than one location as you make your way to either queuing area There will be search lanes at each queuing area so please be patient and co-operate with stewards at all times Please be mindful of noise and litter while you are passing through residential and public areas
Once the gates are ready to be opened ticket holders will be escorted by stewards across the Peace Bridge and across St Columb’s Road. After the event, ticket holders will be able to exit the space via The Peace Bridge, St Columb’s Road and Cunningham Square.
Transport & Parking Facilities
................................................. Event organisers are working with Translink to ensure there are adequate transport services over the weekend of the event. These include additional bus and rail services from various towns and cities across Northern Ireland plus extended regional and evening city services. Full details will be available via, www.translink.co,uk/bigweekend and the event website. www.derrycity.gov.uk/radio1weekend. Translink services will drop ticketholders at a city centre location or one of the Park and Ride/Stride locations. Please check with your bus driver as you embark the bus for the route arrangements. These will be clearly displayed onboard your bus. A Park and Ride service will be in operation at Drumahoe with a frequent shuttle bus service from this location to the event site.

It is also recommended that ticket holders use one of the two Park and Stride facilities set up on Limavady Road (Foyle College site) or at Fort George. Park and stride points are the identified drop off / pick up points during and after the concerts. A disabled drop off point will be at St Columb’s Park Leisure Centre along Limavady Road. There will also be disabled parking at St Columb’s Park Leisure Centre car park. These spaces are limited and will be reserved for Blue Badge holders who have booked a parking space in advance. Please email elsa.edwards@derrycity.gov.uk for registration. All Park and Ride/Stride car parks will be secured and monitored by stewards. They will be clearly signed using large variable road signage that will be updated regularly as well as clearly visible AA signage.
Planning your weekend if you are not attending the Concerts ............................................. Pedestrian Restrictions Pedestrain access to Ebrington Square, via Dales Corner, will be closed from 12am – 7am each night from the 17th May until 21st May and also on the 28th and 29th May. The access point will close off fully on the 22nd May from 9.15am until 7am on the 28th May. You will be unable to walk along the footpath along the perimeter of the Ebrington Site on the Limavady Road. This will be restricted from 6.00am on Friday 24th to Sunday 26th post event. Please ensure you choose the non-restricted footpath opposite Ebrington Site if you require pedestrian access along the Limavady Road. from 09.15 on Friday 24th May , continuing over the weekend, until 8am on Monday 27th May. Managed access will be provided for Browning Drive residents from 9.15am on Friday 24th May until the event close. There will be no access through Ebrington Square from the gatehouse to the Peace Bridge until 8am on Monday 27th May. The Waterside Riverfront Greenway Path will be closed to public access over the weekend commencing early on Friday 24th May. There will be no access to St Columb’s Park stadium from 20th May until 28th May. St Columb’s Park play area and St Columb’s Park House will remain open over the weekend.
Traffic & Parking Restrictions ............................................. Limavady Road On the evening of Friday 24th – Sunday 26th May, Limavady Road will be closed post concert for a limited period. This is to enable a rapid and safe departure of concert goers departing the site. Traffic diversions will be in place and will be well sign posted. Throughout the weekend parking restrictions will be enforced by the PSNI along the Limavady Road.
St Columb’s Road There will be no vehicle access to St Columb’s Road throughout the event from Friday 24th morning until the event close.
Queens Quay and Foyle Embankment Contingency traffic plans are also in place for closure of Queen’s Quay and Foyle Embankment which may be necessary for reasons of crowd safety. The DRD’s Queen’s Quay car park will be closed from 18:00 on Thursday 23rd May until Monday 27th May to assist with event planning arrangements.

Ŕ Noise Information Event Partners are working together to minimise the impact that this event will have on local residents and business. Noise levels will be monitored on-site and off-site. There is a number you can call if you do experience noise nuisance from the event and your comments and concerns can be dealt with by calling 020 332 898 00. This line will be available each of the event days from 8am until the event close. To facilitate the event a number of sound checks will take place.
