What will you see? Friday 20th September 2013 Culture Night in the UK City of Culture 2013 promises to be unique cultural experience for visitors and locals when venues across historic Derry~Londonderry will throw open its doors and invite the public inside to explore, experience and enjoy local culture. The city will come alive to the sound of live music, theatre, dance as cultural venues and performers come together on Friday, 20th September for a magical evening of exploration and adventure for all the family. A wide range of mostly free indoor and outdoor events that showcase the city’s diverse cultural talents and unique

historical significance have been programmed for every member of the family to enjoy. Culture Night promises to be a colourful and interactive spectacle in an inclusive and welcoming environment where the public will be actively encouraged to come out and share in the celebration and explore, experience and enjoy the City of Culture. All of the venues open on Culture Night form a key part of the city’s all year City of Culture offering throughout 2013 and beyond, so keep your Culture Night programme handy to use for future reference when planning a cultural activity.

As one of the longest strikes in Irish history, the 1913 Dublin Lockout has prompted CCA to consider conditions of labour and the role of workers rights. Through an exhibition, public forums, and a publication, the project explores the past (1913), examines present (2013), and speculates about future (2113), through new and recent projects. During Culture Night, CCA will host a reception with cocktails invented and prepared by various artists.

This is an opportunity to enjoy a guided walking tour along the Columba Heritage Trail - It invites visitors to follow the steps of pilgrims through the medieval city, and celebrates the Christian heritage of the city with visual arts. The tour starts at the ruins of St.Breacon’s in St.Columb’s Park, continues through Ebrington and across the Peace Bridge. Following the walled city the tour visits First Derry Presbyterian Church, then onto St. Augustine’s Church and to Long Tower Church, finishing at Carlisle Road Methodist Church.

‘Without’ is a seven screen video installation which has been created by London-based choreographer Rosemary Lee and Echo Echo. It was filmed from the Derry walls and features over 500 local inhabitants, from tea-dancers to skateboarders and school children to cyclists as they danced, moved, glided and reclaimed the streets.

Eden Place Arts Centre will host an internationally reognised photographic exhibition by Oxfam to highlight the plight of people affected by war in different parts of the world. Art is a useful tool in helping children to understand issues and creatively put their views forward. Local school children will be invited to an arts workshop hosted by a representative from Amnesty International and an arts facilitator. A workshop will take place on Friday 20th September also.

Mark Wallinger

Twice nominated for the Turner Prize, once in 1995 and again in 2007 when he won, Mark Wallinger is one of the best known figures in the British art world. In 1999 his ‘Ecce Homo’ occupied Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth to great acclaim and in 2001 he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale.
