Set sail! ...time to be part of it
Welcome on board the LegenDerry Maritime Festival in association with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2013/2014 for the time of your life! As one of the designated ports for the race, from June 21~29, the city will be transformed into an international marina to host the 12 Clipper Race yachts and race teams. The 2013-2014 Clipper Race fleet includes the Derry~Londonderry~Doire entry skippered by the city’s own Sean McCarter accompanied by his LegenDerry crew, proud ambassadors for our city during an epic trip on the ocean waves. 4
They will receive a rousing welcome when the yachts sail up the Foyle and into the heart of the city on the homecoming leg of their transatlantic challenge. As well as welcoming the fleet of the world’s longest ocean race, the festival will enable marine enthusiasts and visitors alike to enjoy a treasure trove of activities. All of the seafaring action will be set to a spectacular backdrop of live music, street performances, concerts, fantastic food and celebratory events each and every day.

The riverfront will be awash with colour and buzzing with festive fever from early morning until late at night. Visiting yachts, tall ships, Navy vessels, RNLI Life Boat, canoes and dinghies will be here for the festival – there is even a floating stage on the Foyle!
Excited spectators will be out in force with thousands of people from Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Britain, continental Europe and North America expected to attend the nine-day maritime extravaganza.
Derry is firmly established as a vibrant short break destination, having hosted the phenomenal Clipper Race homecoming in 2012 and the first UK City of Culture in 2013 to local, regional, national and international acclaim. The LegenDerry Maritime Festival will copper-fasten the city’s status as a world class location for investors and visitors alike.

From ship to shore! June 21~29, 10am-10pm Festival Village Queen’s Quay
The Festival Village will see Queen’s Quay transformed into a seaside promenade centred around an eye-catching vintagestyle marquee. Enjoy daily performances of live music and entertainment, Walled City Market, interactive heritage and environment displays, a packed arts and crafts programme, animation workshops and a vintage carousel for an unforgettable experience. Local musical maestros will entertain festival-goers in the Festival Village with lunchtime sessions from 12-2.30pm and in the evenings from 5-9pm. The event organisers have thought of absolutely everything nautical and nice; there is even a mother and baby area among the family-friendly facilities. 7

Young At Art June 21~29, 10.30am-6.30pm Arts and Crafts tent Festival Village
A dedicated arts and crafts programme for the little ‘uns will be running daily during the festival. Have fun creating a swashbuckling sword at the pirate-themed children’s workshops and get nautical amid the giant fuzzy felt sea landscape. You can also visit our chill-out zone and hear magical stories of pirate adventures. It is anticipated that these activities will be busy so please come early to avoid disappointment (See listings for more details).

Walled City Market June 21~29, 10am-10pm Festival Village The Walled City Market will showcase the finest produce and products from local traders. You’ll find everything to whet your appetite from spit hog roast to seafood chowder, sandwiches to baked goods and a whole host of savoury snacks and sweet treats. There will also be an assortment of high quality goods ranging from handmade crafts from Africa, laser engraved crystal, seaweed powder, vintage handbags and jewellery. The Walled City Market will feature a number of local traders who are part of the Market Start-up programme run through Enterprise North West.
Continental Market June 21~29, 10am-10pm Queen’s Quay Tantalize your taste buds with the mouth-watering array of food produce at the ever popular Continental Market. Savour the sights and smells of delectable delicacies wafting along the numerous stands gracing the quay. Sample authentic dishes from all corners of the globe as you dine al-fresco and soak up the festival atmosphere. From freshly prepared Spanish Paella to Potato Provencale from France, traditional German sausage to Jamaican jerk chicken you will be spoiled for choice with produce from all four continents and our own local traditional fayre. The Continental Market will also feature a large range of clothing, jewellery, giftware and handmade crafts.
The Galley June 21~29, 10am-10pm Festival Village It’s time to ‘Eat, Drink and Be Merry’ at The Galley, our very own festival bar. Festivalgoers will have ample opportunity to re-fuel in comfort in our atmospheric Festival Village tent. We hope the sun will be splitting the skies but if you prefer the shade, shelter or just somewhere to relax, then this is the place to be. Give the feet a welldeserved rest, get grooving with a range of daily live music performances or simply sit back and enjoy our wonderful riverside setting. 11

Music City Day Saturday June 21, Dawn ‘til Dusk Citywide
Music is at the heart of the city in 2014 and is guaranteed to reach a crescendo with a specially designated Music City Day on Saturday, June 21. The event was launched last year as part of the UK City of Culture 2013 festivities and is back with a bang for the opening of the LegenDerry Maritime Festival. The banks of the Foyle will reverberate with every imaginable form of musical entertainment ranging from solo performances to choirs and orchestras in public spaces, commercial venues, community centres, street corners and even on the historic City Walls! Music-lovers of all genres from pop and rock to traditional folk and classical, will be singing and dancing from dawn to dusk as the city becomes one huge performance area on the longest day of the year. Hundreds are expected to flock again this year to the ancient Grianan of Aileach ring fort outside the city to take part in the Summer Solstice Dawn Chorus and get Music City Day off to a sensational start.
From 10am until 8pm, Guildhall Square will play host to a celebration of all forms of professional and amateur music featuring choirs, bands, schools and the best in local/national talent. Headliners include Ports, The Clameens, Solas, The Rambling Boys of Pleasure, The Jeremiahs and many more. At 1pm, children, adults and choirs of the city will come together for a massive outdoor performance of Danny Boy, the musical air so famously associated with the city. At 8pm in the Guildhall, Radio Ulster presenter John Toal will introduce some of the city’s finest performers, alongside the Ulster Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Bell. On the bill are singer-songwriters Eoin O’Callaghan (Best Boy Grip) and Paul Casey, saxophonist Gerard McChrystal and pianist Ruth McGinley. This concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio Ulster/Foyle from 8pm until 10pm. Tickets will be allocated on the basis of a random draw. There will be performances every lunchtime and evening on the stage in The Galley Bar showcasing our local musicians and artists while the bandstand at Pirates Promenade near Sainsbury’s will feature the city’s latest emerging talent with a host of young artists welcoming the opportunity to be heard by you. In the true spirit of all things nautical we have added a floating stage as one of our performance areas for this year’s festival. We hope it floats your boat!

Now in its 14th year, Celtronic festival has been described as ‘Ireland’s answer to Sonar’ and attracts thousands of fans to Derry to dance to the world’s best electronic music talent. This year’s headliners include Karenn, the live collaborative project from UK producers Blawan & Pariah, playing in NI for the first time while Max Cooper, whose ‘Human’ album has been tipped to be one of the albums of

The legendary Beach Boys are ‘Getting Around’ this summer as they travel all the way from California to the banks of the Foyle. They shot to fame in the early 1960s and have sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time.

With Derry being home to over 50 nationalities, the Ubuntu global festival will celebrate cultural diversity. Named after a South African word, Ubuntu means that all our identities and humanity are inter-linked and should be respected. With sights, sounds and flavours from across the globe, join us for a whistle-stop experience of Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. There will be exhibitions and performances in the main festival tent
alongside traditional craft workshops and presentations from artists representing local communities. Set in the heart of our Festival Village this colourful celebration of cultures pays perfect tribute to our international festival. Free family workshops and drop in activities operate 12 noon – 6pm in the three continental zones (‘Africa and the Caribbean’, ‘Europe and the Americas’, ‘Asia and the Middle East’). Whether sailing is your interest, fishing, power boating or just paddling along the shore, the exhibits and activities will give you a taste of what to expect. From learning the ropes and raising the sails with the experts to finding out where to catch the best fish, specialists will be at hand to assist.
Enjoy fairground attractions and the ghostly galleon ship for a thrilling ride that the whole family can enjoy. Sully, our Shy Sea Monster will also be there and loves to peep out through his crate to see all the boys and girls who visit him... And, if that’s not all enough, get the best views of the festival from our vintage Big Wheel, which is certain to be a major attraction for the crowds.

Standing majestic at 30 metres high, our Giant Wheel will let the whole family view all the action on the river and quayside in a style fit for a captain! Catch it, Cook It! McFarland Quay
Allow yourself to be hooked by the mouth-watering aromas of our “Catch It, Cook It” programme featuring The No Salt Chef Brian McDermott and Just Kayak.ie Experts in marine wildlife will bring the ocean to life with their interactive technology and keep an eye on nature in the marine world.
This year we will have exhibits from the Titanic Oceanic Exploration, RNLI, RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and ISA (Irish Sailing Association), Foyle and Belfast Sailability (sailing for the disabled), as well as our local marine and leisure clubs and associations. There will be a daily programme of events and activities for the young and young at heart....so if you are a landlubber or a marine enthusiast there will be something fabulous in the marine village to whet your appetite.
If you’re looking for something at a faster pace, watersports athletes will be there to chat about the excitement of everything from water skiing to wakeboarding.

Stinky Pirates Trail ‘Shiver me timbers’! One Eyed Willy and his band of Stinky Pirates need the help of the Children of LegenDerry who are known to be the smartest kids in all of the seven seas. Help One Eyed Willy follow the clues to unveil the great treasure and return to his pirate ship, the Vicious Vessel! The trail will depart from The Playhouse on Saturday and Sunday, June 21 &22, 28&29 at 11am, 12.30pm and 2.00pm.

Discover the exciting park development plans, to encourage people to explore the shores of the Foyle. Also, find out how you can help to keep the city’s river banks clean and pollution free. Explore what lives below the surface of the Foyle, with Loughs Agency’s Riverwatch Marine Discovery Tank. Learn about alien species along the banks of the river and how to spot them! You won’t be able to miss the special visitors with the RSPB.
Hunt for fossils or build a volcano at the Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust stand. Find out how to get involved in outdoor activities, for example, canoeing, kayaking and sailing at Creggan Country Park. Council in partnership with Loughs Agency, have developed a ‘LegenDerry Maritime Festival’ Geocache Trail, which is an outdoor treasure hunt. Use your smart phone (GPS enabled devices) to solve the heritage and environmental clues along the banks of the River Foyle. Farewell Finale Saturday, June 28, 10pm onwards Queen’s Quay
It’s time to party as we say farewell to the Clipper Race teams ahead of their departure on Sunday. As dusk falls the fun will begin and our Maritime Festival will draw to a memorable close with a pirate-themed party finale for which festival-goers of all ages are encouraged to don themed fancy dress. Highlights include a spectacular fire and water show on the River Foyle. Two large pirate ships will battle it out in a dramatic pyrotechnic display followed by a stunning fireworks finale.
The launch of an exciting new festival for the city - Obon on the Foyle - will celebrate Japanese traditional art forms and culture with a ceremony known as tōrō nagashi. People will personalize hand-made, paper lanterns with special messages to honour and remember their loved ones. When darkness falls, visitors will pay homage to those who have passed on by floating candlelit lanterns in a pool at the side of the quay, to the beautiful sound of taiko drums.

Parade of Sail The festival will bid an emotional ‘bon voyage’ to the Clipper yachts with a huge fanfare as the Parade of Sail departs for the next official race start at Greencastle in neighbouring Inishowen, Co Donegal. Thousands of local and visiting spectators will be at the quay to ensure the crews get a LegenDerry send-off. Now bring on the 2016 homecoming!

Skies the limit!
Red Arrows Sunday, June 29, 2.45pm Greencastle & Magilligan *not in city The world famous Red Arrows will stage a display of daredevil manoeuvres and flypasts in a spectacular send-off for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. The RAF aerobatic experts, in partnership with Donegal County Council, Limavady Borough Council and Derry City Council, will perform the thrilling display in the skies above Greencastle, Co Donegal - the official starting point for the next leg of the race - and Magilligan, Co. Derry. 32
Thousands of people are expected to catch a glimpse of the distinctive red jets performing their trademark formations, close-passes and dynamic loops and rolls. In the Navy June 20-29 McFarland Quay The Foyle will be a special port of call for visiting navy ships during the festival, providing an opportunity for members of the public to become sailors for the day!
Cruiser Race The Loughs Agency and Moville Boat Club will hold their cruiser race on Lough Foyle on Thursday, June 26 at 3pm (approx). Spectators welcome. To enter contact Moville Boat Club on www.movilleboatclub.com
The Foyle Paddlers and Canoe Club “Lumiere” Moonlight Paddle event will take place on Friday 27th June at 9.30pm until 11pm, leaving from Prehen Boathouse to Foyle Marina Pontoon and return to Boathouse. For booking details check festival website and discover a range of other exciting water activities the club will be delivering throughout the festival such as Double Sea kayaks, Canoe Polo, Taster and Ergo sessions as well as a number of demos.
Clipper Race Crew recruitment Clipper Race Crew recruitment events will be held in the corporate marquee on the quayside on Wednesday, June 25 at 6.30pm and the Guildhall on Saturday, June 28 at 2.30pm. The Clipper Race is the only ocean race in the world for non-professional sailors, where the organisers supply the fleet of twelve identical, 70-foot, stripped down racing yachts, each sponsored by a brand. Fully-qualified skippers are employed to lead the crews safely around the globe. This is a truly unique challenge. Derry is also hosting the 2015-2016 race and accompanying maritime festival so why not consider joining the crew of the next Derry~Londonderry~Doire yacht?

Make a Splash! Wakeboarding & Water-Skiing Tasters Try your hand at some high octane water sports such as water-skiing & wakeboarding taster sessions departing from Prehen Boathouse from the opening day of the festival. Taster sessions are June 21 and 22, 10am-3pm. £5 per session.
Float Your Boat! There’s so much to enjoy as Derry hosts the biggest international maritime event on our shores. Massive crowds are anticipated for the arrival of the Clipper Race yachts – check the website for arrival times closer to the event. You will be able to board the Clipper Race fleet, meet the crews and learn all about their extraordinary 40,000 miles ocean crossing experience at allotted times during the festival.

Stand up Paddleboarding Stand up Paddleboarding sessions will be provided by Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage on Friday, June 27. Suitable from 12+ years. Free sessions at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm. A session lasts 30 minutes and will be given on a first come basis, departing at the public pontoon. Lough Foyle Punt Race Lough Foyle Yacht Club Punt Race will take place at Culmore Point on Wednesday, June 25, 7pm. The 12 Clipper Race skippers with a Clipper Race crew member each will join a local skipper on board a traditional Lough Foyle Punt for a fun night of racing. Take your bets as to who will be the winner in this mini Clipper Race right here on Lough Foyle. Spectators welcome.
Tall Ships
...festival trips Sailing Tasters June 21-27, 11am-2pm; 3-6pm; 6.30pm-8.30pm Foyle Marina The Loughs Agency is offering Keel Boat Sailing Taster Sessions on the River Foyle for the public. All safety equipment, including sailing gear, is provided. Ocean Youth Trust Ireland will deliver these sessions accommodating six passengers at a time. The weekday sessions will be delivered to targeted groups pre-booked by the Loughs Agency. Age limit for keel boats is 10 year-old. Safety Boat Course

The Loughs Agency is also offering a safety boat course with training on the River Foyle. The availability of suitably trained and skilled safety boat operators will assist delivery of events on the water – both during the Maritime Festival and in coming months and years. The course runs over two days (dates to be confirmed) and participants should bring their usual club power boat (plus fuel). Pre-course requirement – RYA (or equivalent) power boat certificate. Dinghy Sessions Post primary schools will have the opportunity to book dinghy taster sessions through the Loughs Agency. The sessions are run by Inish Adventures from their centre at Moville, from Monday, June 9 to Friday, June 13 June. There are two 2½ hour sessions a day (morning and afternoon, commencing 9.30am and 12.30pm respectively), each accommodating a class of 25. Activity focuses on dinghy sailing with shore activities. All equipment (wetsuits, buoyancy aids etc) is provided. Participants need to bring a towel, swim wear, refreshments and change of clothes.
Foyle Sailability Regatta Foyle Sailability will hold its regatta from the Foyle Marina on June 18 and 19 from 12pm to 4pm. Foyle Sailability is a partnership between Foyle Disability Resource Centre, Foyle Port, Loughs Agency, Derry City Council, local sailing clubs and other North West based disability groups. The primary aim of Foyle Sailability is to help people with disabilities to broaden their activity set through promoting access to the Foyle for water-based sports, especially sailing, and to share the marine tourism resource that is the Foyle.

Getting to and from the LegenDerry Maritime Festival couldn’t be easier. The city and region can be accessed by air, sea, road and rail, with reliable transport connections throughout the day. Information and Welfare
If you are driving to the event, or are being dropped off, then you are asked to note the following information:
Welfare facilities on site will include Information and Ticketing Points and toilets. There will also be a Mother and Baby / Quiet area located at the Festival Village. All facilities will be sign posted and stewards / event staff will be able to provide directions.
In addition to the city centre car parks, a Park and Stride / Drop Off area will be available at the Fort George site, accessed off Pennyburn Roundabout. For safety reasons, it will be necessary to introduce traffic management and parking restrictions at various times during the event. Drivers are reminded that normal on street parking restrictions will be in place and that they should avoid parking anywhere where they may be blocking entrances to residences or businesses or where they may be obstructing emergency access.
