SCHOOL WORKSHOPS
School Workshops
1916 – Untold Stories Date: 14 – 16 Nov 2016 Duration: 2 hours Location: Education & Learning Space, Tower Museum Admission: Free
Three groups of students aged between 12-13 will be given the opportunity to take part in creative writing workshops and tours to mark the end of the temporary 1916 exhibition in the Tower Museum. These sessions will be led by Eamon Baker. Booking essential. KEY STAGE 3

Package 1 Guided tour of the Story of Derry Exhibition with dedicated worksheets looking at the key events of the 17th Century. Package 2 A guided tour with additional workshops using the “Our Present Past” computer based interactive, or “Remembering 400 Years – Plantation of Ulster” Object handling workshops. KEY STAGE 2

WW1 and Partition Days: Tuesday and Thursday only Duration: 45 minutes Location: Education & Learning Space, Tower Museum Admission: £1.50 (Package 1) · £2.00 (Package 1 & 2) Teachers and supervisory staff are admitted free of charge.
Package 1: Tour of the Story of Derry Exhibition with dedicated worksheets exploring the Great War in a local and wider historical context. The session will also explore immediately after the war leading to partition. 1916: Untold Stories Date: currently running (closes 27 Nov 2016) Time: Daily 10am to 5:30pm (last admission 4:30pm) Cost: Free 1916: Untold Stories highlights the impact of the seismic events of 1916 on people from the north west and the human connections that still bind us to the past.
Laurentic Centenary Date: 25 Jan 2017 – 21 June 2017 Time: Daily 10am to 5:30pm (last admission 4:30pm) Cost: Free It has been 100 years since the famous Laurentic sank off Lough Swilly on a bitter cold night in January 1917. This exhibition tells the story of the famous ship, the numerous salvage operations and the search for the elusive gold still on board.

Christmas Carollers and Craft Making Christmas at the Tower Museum Make your own Christmas Decorations and Card Making Date: Fri 2 Dec Time: 10am - 11.30am Cost: £2 per person Aimed at both young and old. The first in a series of three workshops, come along and experience what Christmas was like in the past by creating decorations, toys and postcards from a bygone era.

Date: Fri 9 Dec Time: 10am - 11.30am Cost: £2 per person Get into the festive spirit by joining us and the Pink Ladies choir as they set the scene for Christmas. Make your own personalised Christmas decorations or Christmas cards. If you have any old toys from your childhood why not bring them into the museum to show us.
Christmas Craft Making Date: Fri 16 Dec Time: 10am - 11.30am Cost: £2 per person As Christmas fast approaches why not create your special Christmas photograph in front of our Christmas tree featuring decorations made by the local community. Costumes also available.

Laurentic: The Gold Ship

The tragic story of the Laurentic and the eventual recovery of (almost) all the gold stored on board has captured the imagination of many over the years. This coffee morning will take a look at the story in detail, using original objects recovered from the wreck as well as the wreck owner Ray Cossum’s original archive.
Aimed at both young and old. Relive memories of the shirt factory with our wonderful collections on textiles. Listen to and share stories about the shirt factory. View our loan box collection with items from the shirt factory or just sit back and enjoy your cup of tea and listen to the bars!

In this interactive session, participants are guided through almost 10,000 years of history, from the arrival of Ireland’s first people, to the planting of the first potatoes. Delivered by Nic Wright of Hearthside Heritage, the session consists of an overview of the development of prehistoric and early historic Irish society, approached through the lens of food and edible resources. You will have the opportunity to taste a variety of traditional foods from Bronze Age hearthcakes, to Plantation pottage.

Denise Henry – Mabel Colhoun Date: Thurs 17 Nov Time: 7:30pm Cost: Free
Mabel Colhoun was one of the city’s best known teachers and archaeologists. Her pioneering work in the local naturalist society, as well as her extraordinary life’s work in researching and mapping the archaeological heritage of Inishowen, will be discussed by Denise Henry. A selection of Mabel Colhoun’s archive, currently held in the Tower Museum, will be on display, including some of Mabel’s beautiful drawings.

Guy Warner: Naval Warfare in the North-West 1914-18
Derry City Cemetery Records Project

Historical Aviation expert Guy Warner will discuss the war against the U-boats in the North West from 1914-18, focusing on the role of local bases, including the United States Navy flying boat base at Ture, Inishowen.
The Derry City Cemetery Records project has been ongoing since February 2016. The cemetery, which opened in 1853, is the final resting place for the remains of many past residents of the city. It offers a virtual pocket history of the city within its records. At this talk, staff will reveal the process behind digitising the records, the progress of the project so far as well as some new findings.
