Gap coffee co, a new coffee outlet with a difference has opened its doors in the North West. Centrally situated in Bridgend, just off the round-a-bout on one of the busiest roads in the county, linking Donegal, Derry and Inishowen with the rest of the country. Gap coffee co is just the perfect place to meet up with friends and colleagues, where you can relax in comfort and catch up with the world using their free wifi or just call in and collect a coffee to go. Most of the furniture in this unique coffee shop has been salvaged. During the renovation of the old building, they found that the lintels supporting the windows were in fact parts of railway track – the railway that used to run directly behind the building and was in service right up until 1959. The owners re-used this track and it now supports the main menus and a few of the tables. Also discovered on the premises, covered in dirt and dust, was an old safe,

now cleaned up and taking its place firmly (proudly!) as part of the counter. The counter also houses various other pieces including a lovely old apothecary cabinet. Don’t forget to check out the comfortable chair you’re relaxing on as it may be one of the many old, upholstered ship chairs that came off the MS Augustus and RMS Windsor ships and if you look closely underneath, you can see the wire mechanism used to keep them attached to the ships in stormy weathers. Also salvaged from the RMS Windsor ship are various items of crockery and teapots. The RMS Windsor was one of the largest passenger/cargo ships that sailed from England to South African ports from 1960. If you’re curious about the hanging lights in gap coffee co they were also salvaged, not from sh ships but from old European factories. Co Continuing along th the salvaged theme Da Danny Doherty a lo local craftsman cr created the amazing ta table pedestals from di discarded industrial it items such as the ra railway track, an ol old lorry jack, an ol old spring from a Be Bedford van and a ja jackhammer.

The table tops too have been made from old materials, mainly from old brick pallets and a few from an old gym floor. The chapel chairs, mixed with a few antique chairs offer the customer the comfort to dwell in this spacious and interesting space. The lovely old stove adds a homely touch especially when lit during colder weather. When it comes to customer service you’ll be well looked after as this new venture is headed by local man Gareth O’Connor, who has a wealth of knowledge and experience after managing a local Starbucks store for many years. Gareth’s emphasis is not only on serving great coffee but also on offering a great array of homemade treats and cakes, a range of healthy salads, paninis and wraps. Their great sandwiches are made with fresh bread, hand kneaded and baked every morning, it doesn’t get any fresher than this! Or you could pick from their range of sweet treats including crispy buttery croissants, iced cinnamon swirls and cakes freshly baked locally and delivered in the mornings by the Slow Food Co. just a few miles up the road in Newtowncunningham. Forgot to mention they’ve just launched their own range of blended cold drinks ‘gap fraps’ with or without coffee including strawberries and cream and caramel coffee, a must to try. Don’t forget to call in at gapcoffeeco, Bridgend, open 7 days, mon to sat 8.30 – 6pm, sun, 11.30 to 6pm. Open later in summer months.
