LOD IN BIM

Level of Detail or Level of Development (LOD)

Level of Detail or Level of Development (LOD) is a theoretical concept to support model development. The idea is that you attach a LOD status attribute to objects in conjunction with standardized reusable checklists. Thus you can, with increased certainty, guarantee a certain quality of information at a given point.

LOD 100

The Model Element may be graphically represented in the Model with a symbol or other generic representation but does not satisfy the requirements for LOD 200. Elements in LOD 100 are usually developed in the Concept Design stage.

LOD 200

The Model Element is graphically represented within the Model as a generic system, object, or assembly with approximate quantities, size, shape, location, and orientation. Non-graphic information may also be attached to the Model Element. Elements in LOD 200 are usually developed in the Schematic Design stage.

LOD 300

The Model Element is graphically represented within the Model as a specific system, object or assembly in terms of quantity, size, shape, location, and orientation. Nongraphic information may also be attached to the Model Element. Elements in LOD 300 are usually developed in the Detailed Design stage.

LOD 350

The Model Element is graphically represented within the Model as a specific system, object, or assembly in terms of quantity, size, shape, orientation, and interfaces with other building systems. Non-graphic information may also be attached to the Model Element. Elements in LOD 350 are usually developed in the Construction Document stage.

LOD 400

The Model Element is graphically represented within the Model as a specific system, object or assembly in terms of size, shape, location, quantity, and orientation with detailing, fabrication, assembly, and installation information. Non-graphic information may also be attached to the Model Element. Elements in LOD 400 are usually developed in the Fabrication & Assembly stage.

LOD 500

The Model Element is a field verified representation (i.e., as-built) in terms of size, shape, location, quantity, and orientation. Non-graphic information may also be attached to the Model Elements. Elements in LOD 500 are usually developed in the As-Built stage.
