INTEGRATED WEALTH MANAGEMENT
PRESENTS
HONORING 30 YEARS OF
DESERT AIDS PROJECT THROUGH MUSIC, STAGE AND SCREEN BENEFITING CLIENT SERVICES AT
WELCOME
FROM THE CEO
Since the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala made its first appearance 20 years ago, so many people have helped Desert AIDS Project become the world-class organization that it is today through long-lasting contributions of their time and talents, in addition to financial support. Even from D.A.P.’s start in 1984, people like Steve Chase have been joined by Deirdre Coit, Mary and Dr. Lawrence Cone, Anne and Kirk Douglas, President and Mrs. Ford, Father Andrew Green, Steve Kaufer, Michael Kiner, Joan Kroc, Les Dames du Soleil (driven by the talented Marshall Pearcy and Douglas Woodmansee), Andy Linsky, Dr. David Kaminsky, Dick Taylor and Guy Lawson…and, and, and!! The list could fill this entire program. Instead, let me express the collective thanks of D.A.P.’s clients, staff, and board of directors for the thousands of hard-working volunteers, generous donors and sponsors, and board members who have given us their unswerving devotion and generosity, today and over the years. That includes everyone who is sitting at the 2014 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards tonight and reading these words. But tonight’s gala wouldn’t be the spectacular you are sure to enjoy without the drive, determination, creative vision, and outstanding leadership of our amazing co-chairs Barbara Keller and Jim Casey. While they have already brought us five wonderful evenings of entertainment and activism that have gotten better with every Steve Chase gala since their first in 2009, they have never lost sight of the real goal of why we’re here yet again tonight…to recognize the contributions of those, near and far, famous and “just folks,” who continue to work toward the day we no longer have to say “AIDS is not over.” And Integrated Wealth Management has been there, every step of the way, as presenting sponsor of our annual gala…to the tune of $1.5 million. Thank you, Barbara and Jim, for your unselfish support of Desert AIDS Project…not only as gala co-chairs…but each and every day that you give us the benefit of your leadership on our board of directors, your individual financial contributions, and the support of your incredibly generous businesses. I feel blessed to call you my colleagues and friends. Until there’s a cure…
David Brinkman, MBA CEO, Desert AIDS Project

WELCOME
FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
When we agreed to take on the duties of co-chairs for the 2009 gala, we already knew we were walking in the footsteps of some talented and dedicated people…some of whom we knew but all deserving of their kudos. The first “progressive gala” in 1995 began at Wally’s Desert Turtle for dinner before moving to the McCallum Theatre for a reception with inaugural honorees actor/activist Mary Steenburgen and HIV research legend Prof. Luc Montagnier, followed by a show by the legendary Harry Belafonte. Since those earliest days, co-chair teams of “The Steve Chase” have helped this annual gala become one of the hottest tickets in the Coachella Valley’s social season…necessitating its move to the Palm Springs Convention Center to accommodate the growing numbers who were clamoring for tickets each year. Following in the footsteps of our immediate predecessors, the extraordinary team of Tim Hanlon and Bill Jones, we only hoped we could keep up the impressive trajectory this gala was already on. Beginning in 1995, the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala has raised millions of dollars for direct client services at Desert AIDS Project by combining advocacy with world-class entertainment. With government funding shrinking from the State of California and under threat from the federal Ryan White CARE Act, D.A.P. needs your help more than ever before to provide essential services. Tonight’s honorees – Curt Ringness, Terri Ketover, and David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard – join D.A.P.’s 20-year pantheon of worthy people and organizations that understand that with a cause as pervasive and long-lasting as HIV/AIDS, we truly must think globally while acting locally to get to the tomorrow we hope for…a vaccine against HIV, a cure for AIDS, and an end to the suffering that’s been with us far too long already. Thank you for being with us tonight and we hope you will enjoy this fabulous evening of uplifting and inspiring entertainment brought to you by Live It Up Productions, featuring performers who have appeared on Broadway, national, and international stages – but tonight join us here. Interspersed throughout the evening, you will see the work of film makers and actors who have been shining a light on our cause through work that we honor collectively tonight as “AIDS in Cinema” with our 2014 Arts and Activism Award. But, of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors, major donors, staff, volunteers…and YOU for joining us tonight. We know that, for as long as it’s necessary, you will continue to fight the good fight and support the incredible work of Desert AIDS Project, in serving its clients and helping to prevent the further spread of HIV in this amazing community that each of you help to make more beautiful.

30 Years of Service by Desert AIDS Project Supported by 20 years of the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards and a generous, caring community
In 1984, Desert AIDS Project was little more than a group of very determined volunteers. With the first diagnoses three years earlier of what we have come to know as HIV, they were concerned about this mysterious illness that was quickly advancing among their family and friends…with deadly results to our local community. Alarmingly, government and the healthcare community seemed slow to respond and the nearest county hospital was an hour away. The volunteers at D.A.P., including nurses and social workers, swung into action by helping to provide case management, education, and psychosocial support. With the help of leaders like Steve Chase, a model AIDS service organization took form By 1988, Desert AIDS Project had grown to a staff of 10, including its first executive director, assisted by more than 150 volunteers, who began raising money and awareness with the first Desert AIDS Walk. One of the Walk’s organizers was Steve Chase, an internationally-known interior designer and local resident, who was determined to help the fledgling D.A.P. became a success. He was also instrumental in bringing the national tour of Heart Strings, The AIDS Memorial Quilt, and You: An Event In 3 Acts to the Palm Springs area, the second stop before traveling on to a total of 34 American cities. His welcome letter in the program read, in part: It has been a privilege for me to chair this event because I believe so strongly in the message conveyed and its importance to our population. The greatest appeal to me is that the income from this event will remain here in the desert to benefit Desert AIDS Project, a wonderful organization that we have watched grow from a very small size, to a much larger, well-run operation offering numerous services to people living with AIDS and to the needs of their loved ones. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy this evening’s show, and the memories of it will motivate you to continue to work with us in the battle against AIDS. We can’t do it without you.

Chase played a significant role in D.A.P. being able to open its first fully-licensed primary care medical clinic, staffed with specialists certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine, in 1992. The clinic was made possible through a gift from Joan Kroc, heiress to the McDonald’s fortune and an interior design client of Steve Chase. Kroc and Chase, along with former First Lady Betty Ford, were honored by D.A.P. at “A Valentine’s Gala” in 1993. When Chase died of AIDS-related complications in March of 1994, his fellow philanthropists and D.A.P. supporters lost little time in creating the first annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in February of 1995. Since then, “The Steve Chase” has honored stars of HIV research and medicine, as well as activist-stars of stage and screen, for their commitment in raising awareness and funding to continue the fight. In 2014, we’re working toward an AID-free generation…while serving those living with HIV In the 30 years since D.A.P.’s founding, we are grateful for the scientific research and medication advances that have meant AIDS is no longer a natural result of HIV infection. Today, those who are diagnosed early after infection and begin the appropriate medication therapy can often live a normal lifespan with HIV as a chronic illness. Understanding that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is still with us after more than three decades, D.A.P. has helped organize “Get Tested Coachella Valley,” the nation’s first region-wide initiative to get everyone tested, free and confidentially, for HIV. The commitment is to provide linkage to care for those who are positive and education for those who are negative, in order to bring about an “AIDS-free generation.”
Thank you for doing your part in helping Desert AIDS Project continue the fight!! 19

PERFORMERS
JANE KRAKOWSKI We all know Jane as the hilarious, singing-comedienne “Jenna Maroney” on NBC’s Emmy Award-winning 30 Rock. The role earned her three Emmy nominations, as well as a collective 2009 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Her acting, singing and comedic chops place Jane squarely among the most talented triple-threats in entertainment today. Jane’s acting landed her on Search For Tomorrow, where she earned two Daytime Emmy nominations. And who could forget her performance as “Elaine Vassal” in the offbeat sitcom Ally McBeal. But that’s not all. Jane dazzled Broadway with performances in classic revivals such as Guys and Dolls, Company, Damn Yankees and a Tony-winning turn in Nine. Jane’s hat trick also includes film movie roles and recordings with the release of her debut album last year, titled The Laziest Girl in Town. Based on that resume, we’d say “Lazy? Um…not so much!”
LATONYA HOLMES We call LaTonya a 360-degree entertainer: singer, songwriter, actress and voice talent. She most recently took to the stage in Oprah Winfrey’s production of The Color Purple and had a powerful co-starring role on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Among her latest recordings is a dynamic remake of Diana Ross’ 1976 smash Love Hangover. LaTonya’s most recent songwriting collaboration was with legends Narada Michael Walden and Allee Willis on the driving inspirational anthem Stand Up. As a Georgia native, who attended Chicago’s Roosevelt University on scholarship, LaTonya graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater before going on to win the prestigious Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role of “Lorrell” in Dreamgirls. She toured with pop stars Christina Aguilera and Macy Gray, appeared as a principal vocalist on Stanley Clarke’s score to the acclaimed film Down in the Delta and performed at Sheryl Lee Ralph‘s 23rd annual DIVAS: Simply Singing AIDS/HIV Benefit Concert. So, any questions about “360-degree entertainer”? NITA WHITAKER LAFONTAINE With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, we thought of asking Nita to consider working at D.A.P. But that was before we heard her sing. Her style – blending jazz, pop and gospel – caught the ear of legendary producer David Foster, the chairman of Verve Music Group, who has worked with everyone from Mary J. Blige to Barbara Streisand. Nita became one of his favorites, going on to tour with Andrea Bocelli as a guest duet artist, as well a featured vocalist on tour with jazz trumpeter, Chris Botti. She’s performed in three musical theater premieres: Ragtime, Me and Mrs. Jones (with Lou Rawls) and The Ten Commandments: The Musical. On screen, Nita was featured in The Bodyguard and has television credits including the Emmy Award-winning Please, God, I’m Only Seventeen, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and In The House. With numerous studio recordings credits, it’s little wonder that she and her daughter Liisi, performing as The LaFontaines, were finalists on the NBC singing game show, The Winner Is. As far as we’re concerned, there’s no “finalist” about it…Nita is a winner! 25
PERFORMERS TOMASINA ABATE Like any true Los Angeles native, Tomasina is no stranger to Disney or the other studios. She’s lit up Disneyland’s Tomorrowland Terrace stage as a powerhouse rocker with her band, Tomasina, as well as played “Pocahontas” at the worldfamous park’s Fantasyland Theater. Other on-stage roles include “Magenta” at Universal Studios’ The Rocky Horror Picture Show. But what happens in LA, doesn’t always stay in LA…because this singer-songwriter-composer has also opened in Las Vegas for Joan Jett and Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as sung with a 40-piece orchestra to kick off shows for Earth, Wind, and Fire, Stevie Wonder and Shirley Bassey. Tomasina’s theater credits include playing “Sally” in Cabaret, “Sheila” in A Chorus Line, “Lucy” in Jekyll & Hyde and “Velma Kelly” in Chicago. She recently released a self-produced album, It’s Always Christmas With You and has a full-length album, Here, with her brother and partner in their band Binga & Gogo’s. Both are available on iTunes. Tomasina is now composing an album due out next year. EDEN ESPINOSA Perhaps most well-known for her portrayal of “Elphaba” in the Broadway production of Wicked, Eden Espinosa is a southern California native who made her solo concert debut in Los Angeles in 2008 with a show called ME that she then took to New York for four sold-out performances. The following year, Eden brought the show back to Los Angeles, performing to a sold-out crowd at the Ford Amphitheatre. In 2010, her show From Eden with Love was also performed to sold-out crowds in New York, LA, and San Francisco. She is also well-recognized from her many TV appearances on shows including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The 2008 Tony Awards, The 2008 Alma Awards, Law & Order, and Ugly Betty. With numerous other musical theater accomplishments, she played “Maureen” in the closing company of Rent, filmed live and available from Sony. Known for her powerful and emotionally-charged vocal style, Eden has performed with numerous symphonies in the U.S. and abroad.

ERIC MARTSOLF His BA in Political Science…with honors, no less…emphasizing mass media politics and constitutional law almost drew Eric Martsoff to law school, instead of to stage and screen. While still attending Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, he was performing in choirs, operas, musicals, barbershop quartets, and even a rock band that was proclaimed Harrisburg’s best new band. Since then, Eric has added more than 1500 theatrical performances and 2000 TV episodes to his resume. He is perhaps most widely recognized for his six years portraying “Ethan Winthrop” on NBC’s daytime drama, Passions, before going on to play “Brady Black” on Days of Our Lives in 2008. But this handsome father of fraternal twin sons is so much more than just a ‘soap star’ as proven by his resume of musical theater roles that includes a four-year portrayal of “the Pharaoh” in Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. One critic called him a ‘mix of Elvis and Stallone – a blend of charisma, muscular framework, and a talent to be reckoned with.’ We think you’ll agree. RAY LEEPER AND THE SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE ALL-STARS As a choreographer, creative consultant and creative director, Ray has established himself as one of the most respected artists in the dance industry, with credits spanning television, film, theater, music videos and live stage performances. Ray choreographed numbers for recording artists such as Cher, Elton John and Snoop Dogg. His television work has been prolific – including soap operas, sitcoms and talks shows, not to mention choreographing commercials for Pepsi and Lady Gaga. Then there’s his work on Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, X Factor, America’s Got Talent, MTV and VH-1. His film credits – The Island, Body Chemistry and Move – are as extensive as his stage work, which includes Inappropriate, Radio City Music Hall, Nightlife, Fashion Rocks Broadway…and the 2013 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards!! Well, he’s back again for a second year with a group of his best dancers, sure to make everyone say “I know they can dance!!”

HONOREES CURTIS RINGNESS, JR. 30th ANNIVERSARY, BOARD OF DIRECTORS DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD Sponsored by Desert Regional Medical Center Curt and his now-husband, Barry, attended the very first Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala in 1995. Excited by what they saw from the still-evolving Desert AIDS Project, they continued to attend fundraising events and became donors through the Partners for Life annual giving program in 1998. But Curt soon realized that wasn’t enough – he wanted to become even more involved with D.A.P. by bringing his time and talents to the organization as well. That’s just what he did when he became a board member of Desert AIDS Project in 2000, serving continually until he was elected board chair in 2007. Over those years, Curt has put his experience as a Certified Public Accountant and successful businessman to good use for the organization. Although Curt passed the chair’s gavel to Barbara Keller on July 1, 2013 he continues actively serving the board, including membership on the audit, finance, governance, and medical committees. Curt has maintained a number of successful businesses throughout his career, including Liberty Industries, Inc. in Youngstown, OH, a marketing corporation specializing in sales of industrial wood products and Liberty Technologies, LLP, an industrial stretch and shrink wrap machine manufacturing company. For nearly 20 years, Curt was the chief financial officer of Mullikin Medical Centers and Pioneer Hospital, overseeing its growth from two offices to the largest organization of its kind in the western United States with over 60 medical clinics. In addition to D.A.P., Curt and Barry have contributed to several charitable organizations including the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and the AIDS Assistance Program. They are also Friends of the Rancho Mirage Library.

DAVID KAPLAN & GLENN OSTERGAARD PARTNERS FOR LIFE AWARD FOR 2014 Sponsored by Eisenhower Medical Center During the 2011 Steve Chase gala, the husband-and-husband team of David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard happily surprised everyone by donating more than $50,000 as a challenge to audience members to “Fund-A-Need” for the many HIV medical and social services offered by Desert AIDS Project. This wasn’t the first time David and Glenn demonstrated generosity to D.A.P. They originated the Platinum category of the Partners for Life annual giving program in 2004 – with a gift of $25,000 from the Brautigam/Kaplan Foundation. The Foundation was established by David to fund both the arts and AIDS-related causes in honor of his first partner, Richard Brautigam, who died of AIDS complications in 1989. After growing up in New York and earning a BS in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, David’s credentials from San Francisco State University led him to teaching positions in schools in the Bay Area. Living in San Francisco for 35 years, David ran a successful international manufacturing company and served on the boards of the San Francisco Art Institute, Shanti Project, Names Project/AIDS Memorial Quilt, and is currently a board member emeritus of the San Francisco Ballet. After moving to Palm Springs, David was a board member of Desert AIDS Project during some of its earliest years. Currently, David is a board member of the Pilchuck Glass School, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and the Brautigam/Kaplan Foundation. Glenn graduated with a BA in Fine Arts, focusing on art history and painting, from Montclair State University. After graduation, he helped develop a graduate intern program at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, now called the Museum of Arts and Design. In 1975 he became the personal aide to the great American dancer Martha Graham, traveling internationally with her dance company. At Miss Graham’s suggestion, Glenn begin experimenting with three-dimensional forms, leading to the development of his pillow sculptures. While maintaining an art career, Glenn also worked for a brokerage firm in Los Angeles for 20 years. Glenn has exhibited his paintings and sculpture in New York, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Desert. His work is in many private and corporate collections. He is represented by Austin Art Projects in Palm Desert. Together, David and Glenn are among the Founding Benefactors of the Kaplan-Ostergaard Glass Center at the Palm Springs Art Museum. In addition to their participation at the Museum, they have established a lending program from their personal glass collection, which comprises over 240 works, representing over 80 internationally-recognized glass artists.

HONOREES TERRI KETOVER 100 WOMEN AWARD FOR 2014 Sponsored by Annette Bloch Some people might respond with a sense of hopelessness to the Centers for Disease Control’s statistic that one in 139 women in the United States will be diagnosed with HIV during her lifetime. For Terri Ketover, such a public health issue was simply a reason to roll up her sleeves and get even busier than she already was. Terri assumed the role of Chair of 100 Women, the Desert AIDS Project annual giving program that ensures greater access to affordable healthcare for women living with HIV here in our community by providing gynecological services, including cervical cancer screenings and mammograms, as well as primary and HIV-specialty care. In addition, 100 Women members also provide essential benefits to family members of these female clients, including school uniforms and supplies, plus special meals and gifts at holidays. Terri more than doubled the membership of the 100 Women annual giving program in less than a year, while creating the 100 Women Boutique at the Palm Desert Revivals store and filling it with high-fashion items to benefit D.A.P. The night after the boutique made its debut, she tore up the floor, dancing for women and children affected by HIV as a contestant in the 2nd Annual Dancing with the Desert Stars. Little wonder that Terri was recently honored as Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer of the Year at the annual Philanthropy Day Luncheon by the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Before moving to the desert, Terri earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Miami and had a varied professional career that included a nine-year term as the Executive Director of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, and a long association with the City of Miami as a Special Consultant to the Chief of Police and City Manager. She has been officially recognized by the Florida House of Representatives and the White House for founding the “Do the Right Thing” Program, a nonprofit organization with chapters in 53 cities throughout the United States, as well as Germany and England. Terri has served as a member of the Miami Commission on the Status of Women and numerous boards, including the Parent Resource Center for Prevention of Child Abuse, Coconut Grove Playhouse Regional Theater and Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS). In addition to being a D.A.P. board member and chairing the 100 Women program, Terri currently serves on the Palm Springs Art Museum Annenberg Theater Council and the Museum Associates Council, and is Co-Chair of Michael Childers’ annual “One Night Only” benefitting JFS.

AIDS IN CINEMA ARTS & ACTIVISM AWARD FOR 2014
“Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life. The self-conscious aim of Life is to find expression and Art offers it certain beautiful forms through which it may realize that energy.” ~ Oscar Wilde Throughout the 19 years of the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala, many artists who might seem most comfortable on stage or screen have been recognized for the considerable contributions they have also made as HIV/AIDS activists Among others, this impressive list includes: Ann-Margret, Matt Bomer, Carol Channing, Kristin Chenoweth, Tyne Daly, Peter Gallagher, Jerry Herman, Judith Light, Mario Lopez, Lorna Luft, Bob Mackie, Barry Manilow, Maureen McGovern, Liza Minnelli, Bebe Neuwirth, Rosie Perez, Pauley Perrette, Mary Steenburgen, and Dionne Warwick. But just as the entertainment industry often recognizes ensemble casts, plays, and movies that are, collectively, greater than the sum of any individual performance…so it has been with a few remarkable films that we recognize in 2014 at the 20th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards: And the Band Played On (1993) Sarah Pillsbury, producer Midge Sanford, producer
How To Survive a Plague (2012) David France, writer & director Joy Tomchin, executive producer
Boys on the Side (1995) Don Roos, writer
Philadelphia (1993) Ron Nyswaner, writer Ed Saxon, producer
These seminal films have helped to change the dialogue that surrounds a worldwide epidemic that is now in its fourth decade, since the first diagnoses in 1981. Remarkably, stigma and ignorance still surrounds this public health issue, while individual artist-activists and filmmakers continue to remind us…

THE AWARD THE KNOT
United in our shared commitment to fighting AIDS This newly-designed award symbolizes the contributions of those we honor tonight at the 20th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. Now in the fourth decade of AIDS, there seems to be more reason to hope than ever before. As we draw nearer to a vaccine against HIV and a cure for AIDS, you help us advocate for those who need our care while we continue to prevent further infections. Your support is essential in knitting together the fabric of our community.
THE ARTIST RIK PHILLIPS
D.A.P. is grateful to the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Artists Council for bringing the talented Rik Phillips to us. His body of work over a 40-year career includes award-winning sculptures in public spaces and in private collections including Barbra Streisand and Armand Hammer.
to our dear friend terri ketover and the honorees of tonight’s event. your spirit of giving is admired by all.Â
