Welcome From the BOARD CHAIR & CEO Each year, this gala honors those who are doing so much to help Desert AIDS Project provide care, prevention, and advocacy for those affected by HIV/AIDS or by honoring those helping to stop the further spread of the virus. We’re so pleased to be honoring Carolyn Caldwell, Jim Burba and Bob Hayes, Jim Casey, and Daniel Pintauro for their amazing contributions. But tonight, we have more than the usual cause for celebration. For the first time, the world has an evidence-based blueprint for treatment, prevention, and the end of the spread of HIV, and an end to the AIDS epidemic. What was once only a dream is now a real-world opportunity. In 2016, we will need to work even harder to scale up HIV testing, link HIV-positive people to care, provide them with HIV medications, retain people in care while achieving viral load suppression, and provide access to PrEP for those who are HIV-negative to stay that way. Greater heads than ours have confirmed it and have written at length about it. Please take a moment to read the next page, as an excerpt from an article in the December 3, 2015 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. It was written by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Head of the National Institutes of Health – and this gala’s 2009 Science and Medicine Award honoree – and Hilary Marston, MD, MPH. They detail the scientific evidence proving the end is within our grasp. We are excited to continue working with each of you in 2016, so that D.A.P. can continue to help lead the way in making this a reality here in our community. But for right now, we join our fabulous gala co-chairs in spotlighting each and every one of you for always being there to support us. Ending the HIV–AIDS Pandemic — Follow the Science The following is an abridged version of the above-titled article by Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Hilary Marston from the December 3, 2015 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Consider reading the entire article on the NEJM website: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1502020 In July 1996, researchers, policymakers, and activists involved in the fight against HIV–AIDS met in Vancouver, Canada for the 11th International Conference on AIDS. During that historic meeting, practitioners and patients heard evidence regarding a powerful weapon to stop the relentless onslaught of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), with a protease inhibitor as the centerpiece of the regimen. In the nearly 20 years since that watershed meeting, the early promise of durable effects from combination therapy has been realized for many patients; between 2000 and 2014, the rollout of ART saved an estimated 7.8 million lives worldwide. Despite this success, the timing of ART initiation has remained the subject of intense debate. Today, a series of well-designed efficacy studies conducted over a period of more than a decade has fundamentally changed this discussion...researchers continue to accrue promising data on the concept of using ART for HIV prevention in HIV-negative persons – pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Taken together, these studies have shown definitively that the benefits of prompt initiation of ART – regardless of the CD4+ T-cell count – outweigh the risks, for both the infected person and uninfected sexual partners and that PrEP can be implemented in a way that is both acceptable to patients and safe and effective in blocking HIV transmission. As a triad of critical clinical trials, SMART, HPTN 052, and START, settle the debate concerning early initiation of ART, clinicians and patients can now be assured that ART’s benefits outweigh the risks for the infected person, regardless of CD4+ T-cell count. Public health officials can confidently support early treatment, recognizing the spillover public health benefits for HIV prevention. Moreover, IPERGAY provides important new data that support the use of PrEP for preventing HIV infection in high-risk populations. Taken together, these studies provide an evidence-based blueprint for effective treatment and prevention of HIV infection and will serve as critical tools in the fight to end the HIV–AIDS pandemic. However, in order to realize that promise, the political will must be mobilized to match the scientific evidence and provide the financial and human resources necessary to dramatically scale up HIV testing and treatment around the world. The science has spoken. There can now be no excuse for inaction.

DESERT AIDS PROJECT 2015 was an amazing year at Desert AIDS Project!! During 2015, D.A.P. continued evolving, changing, and striving for a better way to deliver care, prevention, and advocacy, not only for our patients and clients, but for the larger community as well. That progress happens each day, with the help of donors, volunteers, and other supporters. They are making it possible for D.A.P. clients to live longer, stronger lives while community partners are doing their part to help bring about that much-hoped-for “AIDS-free future” D.A.P. believes is in sight. On March 16th, we opened The Dock, a new sexual wellness clinic... This gave us a way to not only build on the success of Get Tested Coachella Valley for HIV testing and access to care... but to provide much-needed STI testing and treatment, along with PrEP, PEP, and family planning services. On July 1st, just 18 months after the launch of Get Tested Coachella Valley... Our Midpoint Report of this three-year initiative to dramatically reduce the spread of HIV by testing more adolescents and adults, the nation’s first-ever, community-driven regional testing, reported: – More than 35,000 HIV tests by testing partners, in both community and clinical testing sites – Community test sites were increased by 79% overall, reflecting a 92% increase in public sites and 71% in private test sites, such as drug rehab centers – Get Tested Early Intervention Specialists linked to care 89.9% of those testing positive, exceeding the California average of 54%, the U.S. average of 66%, and the CDC target of 80% On August 12th, we were recognized and funded as a Federally Qualified Health Center... To mark August 9-15 as National Health Center Week, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced $160 million in Affordable Care Act funding to 266 health center sites for delivery of comprehensive primary health care services in the communities that need them the most. This helps us continue to provide primary care, as well as HIV-specialty care, for so many in need of our medical, dental, behavioral health, and social services. Our patients don’t have to travel from place to place to see their case manager, their doctor, and other people who can help them – it’s all under one roof here at D.A.P. That’s one of the things that really sets us apart from many other health centers. In November... We were recognized for the third consecutive year as a “Top 20 HIV Charity”...and that was AFTER being in the top 6% of all American nonprofits for spending 82% of our revenues on programs and services!! Volunteers and staff served Thanksgiving dinner, supplied by Lulu California Bistro, to more than 150 clients. On December 1st, we marked World AIDS Day... CEO David Brinkman was invited back to Washington, DC, for a second time within a month, to represent our community coalition of partners regarding the success of Get Tested Coachella Valley.

2015 highlights Meanwhile, D.A.P. observed the day: On-campus – After rededicating the “Ribbon of Hope” that formerly hung on the building’s exterior, a free lunch shared by clients and staff was followed by a full day of activities, including morning and afternoon showings of the new documentary, Desert Migration, featuring long-time survivors of HIV. At the Camelot Theatres – The 2nd Annual Everyday Heroes Awards celebrated the contributions of just of few of the volunteers that help D.A.P. throughout the year. This year’s honorees included Bella Da Ball, Kenny Jervis and Michael Crisp, Margie Lobley, and Nicholas Snow. On December 28th, Chill Bar on Arenas continued their great partnership with D.A.P. and Get Tested Coachella Valley... By hosting our community education presentation on PrEP with prominent spokesperson Damon Jacobs, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and HIV prevention specialist. Throughout the year, we’ve helped clients find new direction, while doing medical research on our own and with partners... In recognition that HIV, with proper care and treatment, can be managed as a chronic condition, D.A.P.’s Career Building Program continues to help clients who want to return to gainful employment or give them a reason to make a contribution as a volunteer for a meaningful cause. As of year-end 2015: – 104 program graduates are now employed, including at D.A.P. – 30 have found volunteer positions – Three have found internships – Three have gone back to school – D.A.P. has formed eight new business partnerships with employers like Ristretto, Progressive Care Partners, Destination PSP, and ACE Hotel & Swim Club, among others – D.A.P. sponsored a Client Art Show in December to showcase talent Under the direction of Dr. Steven Scheibel, D.A.P. has engaged in medical research studies that include: – The search for treatment for drug-resistant gonorrhea – A Medical Therapy Management study to determine just how well HIV-Specialized Pharmacies, such as the D.A.P. Walgreens drugstore, are doing in tightening the connections between a patient’s doctor and pharmacist – A study on HIV, aging, and the brain – Finding an antiretroviral that’s easier on the bones and kidneys – A new treatment for anal dysplasia If you’d like to be a part of helping Desert AIDS Project provide Care, Prevention, and Advocacy, check out why some of your friends and neighbors have already joined their Partners for Life and 100 Women annual giving programs. Welcome From the GALA C0-CHAIRS Tonight, we are going to shine a spotlight on just some of the thousands of people, businesses, organizations, foundations, and other supporters who have done so much to help Desert AIDS Project for so long – and are still steadfast in their devotion to D.A.P.’s mission. Over the last 30+ years, D.A.P. has gone from its grassroots beginnings of concerned volunteers to an organization that national leaders are holding up as a replicable model in their plans for an AIDS-free future. While all three of us were excited to team-up and take the reins as gala co-chairs for the 22nd Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards, we knew we had a big reputation preceding us from the amazing, seven-year duo of Barbara Keller and Jim Casey. These two are the very embodiment of sharing “time, talent, and treasure” – not only with D.A.P. but with a number of other worthy nonprofit organizations throughout our community as well. Even as we salute them, we know Barbara and Jim would be encouraging us to turn that spotlight around on so many other “worthies” in our community. You’ll see just a few of them spotlighted on stage tonight... and so many more in the audience. Then there are the 100+ volunteers without whom this gala would never be possible, as they greet you on the red carpet and help us all enjoy this evening of entertainment and activism. While all donors, volunteers, and other supporters won’t bask in a literal spotlight tonight, we want them ALL to know they are appreciated. That’s why we said “If you are going to insist on including co-chair bios in this program, WE get to say a few words of thanks, too.” And we’re going to ‘name names’ in the next three pages! We know we can’t even BEGIN to thank everyone who deserves our gratitude... but just watch us do our best tonight!! Until there’s a cure...

After graduating the University of Arizona in 1987, Patrick Jordan began his career working with the legendary record executive Johnny Barbis. Quickly developing his promotional expertise on the competitive L.A. radio scene, Patrick scored hits for Carole King, Michael Penn, and the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack. After moving to the PolyGram record label in New York, where he became the company’s Promotion Coordinator for a staff of 18 in addition to managing the office of the Executive Vice President, Patrick then served as the National Director of Operations for Island Records. Reporting to the President and CEO, he was intricately involved in the promotion, marketing, and sales success of such luminary artists as U2, the Cranberries, Melissa Etheridge, Elton John, Salt N Pepa, and the Bee Gees. From 2000–2004, Patrick served as the Head of Operations for DreamWorks Records and was acting liaison to the DreamWorks SKG Film Marketing division. So...what’s the next logical step when you’ve decided you need a change, after nearly two decades of managing the promotion and publicity of some of the most important entertainers in the music industry? For Patrick Jordan, it was real estate. Today, Patrick brings his skills to fully understand his client’s needs and expectations, marketing each property to a specific clientele that will appreciate its unique attributes. No wonder he’s an Executive Luxury Director with Bennion Deville Homes. The distinction of that job title is given to only 15 agents of the 750 they employ in the Coachella Valley, as based on the outstanding sales and leadership qualities those few agents exhibit. But Patrick hasn’t just blazed career paths in music and real estate. He has also been a long time AIDS activist, helping to get the first events off the ground with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. He’s also been a supporter of Gay Men’s Health Crisis in New York, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Treatment Action Group, and of course, Desert AIDS Project where he serves on their board of directors. For many years, Patrick has been a stand-out fundraiser for the annual Desert AIDS Walk, which benefits client services, and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the event, while also encouraging his personal network to greater involvement with D.A.P.’s work. In recognition of his long support, Patrick was honored by D.A.P. with the Partners For Life Award at the 2011 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala. A few words from Patrick... “This is an awesome community – full of ‘givers’ who want to help worthwhile causes, like D.A.P. I really enjoy the annual, good-natured competition that takes place between my Desert AIDS Walk team and all of the others, whether in the real estate community or elsewhere. There are WAY too many to mention by name but I’d like to spotlight some of those who gave so much this year in serving on the 2016 gala committee – like Jim Watterson and George Martin, Jim Fielding and Edison Briones, Tracy Boomer and Robert Downing, Dr. Kris Morshedian, Tim Parrott and Valerie Powers Smith, Esq. They exemplify community service for all the right reasons.” 12

With a double major from Syracuse University, Dave Morgan began his career in media as a broadcaster, his passion for the business took him into executive positions in Human Resources and then sales promotion for radio with Clear Channel. Dave’s quick rise through the ranks, included a relocation to Los Angeles to oversee the company’s expansion of their Southern California division. Always motivated to own and run his own company, following the example set by his father, Dave quickly leveraged his marketing, sales, and promotion skills to create Reaction Marketing & Promotions, a full-service marketing and promotions agency. His media background poised him perfectly to work with major entertainment industry accounts including Warner Brothers Home Entertainment, ABC Entertainment, Fandango, Disney Theatrical, and others. Dave’s creative concepts were realized through mass-exposure promotions. Just a few of these included the Stagecoach and the Country Music Awards festivals, and customized promotional events around the U.S., including high-profile presence for Fandango at the hugely-popular, annual Comic Con event in San Diego. Relocating to the desert in 2001, Dave continued to expand his company’s spectrum through the addition of a live performance division, handling talent and show production, both nationally and globally for stars like the iconic Jennifer Holiday and Emmy Award-winning actor/comedian Leslie Jordan, as well as Alec Mapa, Varla Jean Merman, Pam Ann, Amy & Freddy, and many others. But Dave also felt strongly about giving back to his new community in Palm Springs and beyond. Not only a long-time Partner For Life at Desert AIDS Project, Dave raised more than $200,000 for AIDS Assistance Program with seven consecutive years of Taste of Palm Springs. Honored at the 2015 Steve Chase gala with the Partner For Life Award, Dave has led his team in bringing the community Dancing with the Desert Stars, a local version of the TV mega-hit, that just a few months ago named its five-year All Star. Dave says... “D.A.P. has always known how to throw great events and Palm Springs is a town that loves a good party! I was glad Reaction could help out with this year’s gala – special thanks to Scott McGillvray who worked tirelessly on the brand and graphic design for this years’ gala. I am so proud of Dancing with the Desert stars, having just celebrated its 5th year. I am so impressed how members of our community have committed their time to be part of the event – including my co-chair Suzanne Quardt, Nina Beck, Rene Dell’Acqua, Ron Duran, Nino Eilets, Tony Marchese, Mindy Reed, and Desert Dancing All-Star Bianca Rae to name just a few... and those that support Dancing With The Desert Stars by your attendance... it shows community support for D.A.P. and that’s worth a spotlight any day!!”

Dr. Suzanne Quardt (aka “Dr Q”) always knew she wanted to become a doctor yet her path as a Plastic Surgeon was more of a serendipitous route. A former foster child born in New York City, she was adopted and raised in nearby NJ by her wonderful family whose love and support helped mold her into the woman she is today. Loving not only the sciences, Suzanne also relished the arts including music and dance. Her talent landed her the opportunity to perform classical piano at Carnegie Recital Hall at the age of 13. She was awarded the “Garden State Distinguished Scholarship” to attend Rutgers University where she co-founded the Rutgers Performing Dance Club and won numerous awards for hip-hop choreography. She went on to medical school and during her subinternship at Columbia, she received a letter of recommendation from the now famous Dr. Oz who helped attain her acceptance at the University of Southern California for General Surgery Residency. She moved to L.A. in 1996 for 10 more years of surgical training. She performed Cardiothoracic/Transplant Research, published numerous scientific articles and was influenced by her mentors to pursue Plastic Surgery, obtained her board-certification and now continues to sculpt faces, figures and transform lives on a daily basis. She moved to the Desert in 2006 and absolutely loves the community spirit here! She served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Eisenhower Medical Center and Assistant Director of their Wound Care Center. She’s been nationally recognized as a “Top Doc” for the past five years in a row and featured in Palm Springs Life and several magazines. She’s felt a special connection with the Desert Community, and has fortified many bonds with dear friends, colleagues and patients at Desert AIDS Project and beyond. When not in the office or OR, you’ll find her spending time with her loving and supportive husband, Rick and their three rescue doggies (TJ, Simon & Buddy). She enjoys mentoring young women who wish to become physicians, as well as giving back despite her always busy schedule. She’s thrilled and honored to be involved this year as a Co-Chair for this tremendously momentous event! Suzanne wants you to know... “Like many of us who’ve lost or know someone living with HIV/AIDS, I dearly want to see an end to this epidemic. As a medical professional, I admire the work of Desert Regional Medical Center for their years of extraordinary, ongoing support, and how they helped launch Get Tested Coachella Valley under the leadership of Carolyn Caldwell. Given my connection to Eisenhower Medical Center, I love the continuing partnership with D.A.P. that continues thanks to David Perez, Martin Massiello, and Aubrey Serfling. Ethylina Canne entered the world with a love of show tunes and anything sparkly. Even while growing up on a modest farm on California’s central coast, there were no Daisy Dukes for this girl!! Ethylina longed for the stage and screen, inspired by old-school showgirls like Ann Miller, Mitzi Gaynor, and Shirley Bassey... to name just a few. After finishing high school, she headed for the big city – San Francisco – to start her career. Even though the stars in her eyes never faded, the naïve showgirl grudgingly got a day job as a clerk at the local post office to pay the bills. Turning her sights on the glamour and glitz of Hollywood, Ethylina had a very short stint on Nip/Tuck… and by short, she means about 30 seconds!! Her acting career didn’t take off, despite meeting Rosie O’Donnell on set and thinking they’d become fast friends! After months of no calls from Rosie, Ethylina got a job at the corner diner, bussing tables and taking dessert orders to make ends meet... always hoping to meet that director or get that role that was written especially for her. But alas, her dreams never came true and that mind’s-eye-movie of making it big in Tinseltown soon faded to black. Ethylina knew Palm Springs was the city that Hollywood stars used to flock to and felt they might appreciate a mid-century-style gal like herself. CHAKA KHAN She debuted when funk music ruled... that floor-shakin,’ heart-breakin,’ mind-blowin’ mixture of jazz, soul, rhythm and the straight-up, low-down, dirty blues. Funk is raw, political, honest, and pitch perfect. So is Chaka Khan. Born Yvette Marie Stevens in Great Lakes, IL, Chaka burst onto the scene in the early 1970s as the lead singer for the funk band, Rufus. Her massive, shoulder length ‘fro and that amazing voice made her unique and instantly recognizable. Her voice is soft and smoky in its low- and mid-range, yet bright and powerful through to its highest register. It’s that combination of contradictions that sent “funkateers” nationwide racing to get her first albums including Rags to Rufus, with its smash hit Tell Me Something Good. Her sound helped shoot Rufus into the company of giants: Earth Wind & Fire, WAR, the Ohio Players, the Isley Brothers, the Average White Band, and Sly and the Family Stone – who established the sound – and the Parliament Funkadelics, who led the movement and named its followers. Rufus, however, was likely the only one of these self-contained mini orchestras whose front-man was a woman. Rufus’ front-woman went on to win 10 Grammy Awards, two as a member of the band; two Soul Train Awards; and a 2012 induction into the SoulMusic Hall of Fame among many other accolades. She’s sold an estimated 70 million records worldwide and has seven gold singles, seven gold albums, and three platinum albums. Above all, Chaka Khan is a legend who has remained relevant for over 40 years. She’s stayed top-of-mind in the famously fickle music industry through diversity and innovation. When rappers were liberally sampling from the now-dormant funk masters, Chaka Khan turned the tables. She became the first R&B singer to sample rap, asking Melle Mel to utter the most infectious hook in hip-hop history – Chaka Khan, Chaka Khan – from 1984’s Grammy-winning I Feel for You. Along with hip hop, Chaka dabbled in many other genres: There’s been jazz with Be Bop Medley; and blues with B.B. King, Etta James, Eric Clapton, and Gladys Knight. She’s had award-winning duets with Ray Charles, Mary J. Blige and Michael McDonald. She sang Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On? with the Funk Brothers to Grammy acclaim. She took a page from the Great American Songbook and used her unique combination of lightness and power to totally reinvent My Funny Valentine. She’s also performed on stage in the musical Mamma, I Wanna Sing and as Sophia in the Broadway musical The Color Purple. Finally, there was her biography, Chaka! Through the Fire, where she discusses her life frankly and openly admits substance abuse, sobriety, and the reasons behind them both. The lyrics of her 1984 hit song may describe some fictitious steadfast love. But it also illustrates the commitment her oldest fans have for Chaka Khan: “Through the fire, to the limit, to the wall. For a chance to be with you we’d gladly risk it all…” 41

honoree 100 WOMEN AWARD CAROLYN CALDWELL

Carolyn Caldwell has come a long way from her roots in rural Camp Hill, Alabama, population: 992.

Although her parents were not formally educated – her father could not read or write and her mother had only an eighth-grade education – they gifted her with intelligence and compassion. Those gifts gave her a drive that helped her succeed, both academically and professionally. Those gifts also supported her as she lost friends to AIDS during the darkest days of the crisis, including her best friend in 2000. When AIDS began delivering its worldwide punch in the 1980s, Carolyn was a recent college graduate, with a bachelor’s degree in zoology and chemistry from Alabama A&M, working in a clinical laboratory at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Alabama. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in health care administration from Texas Woman’s University in Dallas. In 1996, she became chief operating officer at Dallas Southwest Medical Center, with later advances to chief executive officer jobs at hospitals in Texas and Missouri. In 2012, Carolyn and her husband Daniel moved to the Coachella Valley where she became president and CEO of Desert Regional Medical Center. She’s also a registered medical technologist, a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, and is serving a three-year term on the American Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees. Although loving the scenic beauty and culture of our valley, Carolyn noticed there is both great wealth and great need here, side by side. So, in addition to running the 385-bed hospital at Desert Regional, she’s been active with the Desert Highland Gateway Community. When she was honored by the City of Palm Springs Human Rights Commission for that work, Carolyn had already joined the Board of Directors at Desert AIDS Project, bringing her face to face with the AIDS epidemic once again. But this time, there was much more she could do to fight the good fight. Carolyn secured an establishing $1.5 million gift for D.A.P.’s Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign from Tenet, Desert Regional’s parent company. Get Tested is a “treatment as prevention” movement to routinize HIV testing, increase access to care for those testing HIV-positive, significantly reducing infections, and helping to bring about an AIDS-free generation – a goal that is clearly in the sights of the federal government and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Carolyn said, “All these years after my best friend’s death from AIDS, working with D.A.P. has been rewarding to me on so many levels – both personally and as a healthcare professional. And as a wife and a mother, I have been so gratified to be a part of the work of 100 Women in reaching out to women and children whose lives are affected by HIV or AIDS.”

AWARD ARTIST MICHAEL WEEMS

Michael is a native of Annapolis, Maryland. He credits his development of this particular art form to his life experiences and observations. He remembered as a child visiting the museums of Washington DC to see the works of the great master painters and sculptors. Michael also gained extensive experience in design and fashion through his work with Gucci and Tiffany & Co. Michael’s new collection is featured in a few select stores around the country and in February 2008, Michael has opened his first gallery and store in famous Palm Springs, California. There is an energy and vigor within metal. Michael Weems draws upon this vigor and energy to create his beautiful new body of work. Michael is one of the few artists who uses vintage metal as his choice of canvas. Over the past decade Michael’s work became famous in the United States and in many parts of the world for creating a collection of etched and carved crystal and glassware. Work from the Michael Weems Collection was commissioned for Dom Perignon; chosen as the favorite gifts for recipients at the Academy Awards; and used as gifts by the Attorney General of the United States given to other Head’s of State. Michael has also created limited edition appliances for the Jenn Air Atrezzi line, a vase for the Susan G.
