A Passionate Eye: The Weiner Family Collection Exhibition Has Been Extended Through Sunday, September 11, 2016 Annenberg Wing, Palm Springs Art Museum
The Weiner Family Collection offers a fresh focus on this famous cultural asset. Comprised of sixty-one sculptures and paintings, it represents the largest survey of the collection and includes numerous works new to our museum. Its accompanying catalogue, authored by Dr. Steven A. Nash and based on extensive research in the Weiner family archives, is the first comprehensive scholarly study ever focused on the collection and brings to light a great deal of new information on individual works as well as the remarkable story of the collection’s growth and early history. The installation includes a video interview of Gwendolyn Weiner by Dr. Nash and a video on the Weiner family legacy at the Palm Springs Art Museum. A major feature of this project is the expanded knowledge it provides on the man behind the collection – Ted Weiner, a self-made oil magnate who discovered modern art mid-way through life and, with very little formal education, became a highly knowledgeable collector.

Seeing the Light: Illuminating Objects October 10, 2015 - January 03, 2016 Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center - Trina Turk Gallery
See examples from midcentury to contemporary designers and artists and how their chosen materials and media reflect light or illuminate. Exhibit includes an outsized globe designed by Robert Wilson for a stage production of Einstein on the Beach and the striking fabric, Magnum, designed by Jack Lenor Larsen for a theater curtain, each illustrate the drama of radiance. Modernist sculptor Harry Bertoia’s work, Golden Bush, uses copper and bronze to create a stylized natural form, while artist Jennifer
Steinkamp mesmerizes us with her video of a hauntingly beautiful tree as it revolves through the four seasons. Glass artists Dale Chilhuly, Angelo Barovier, Kait Rhoads, and Karen Bexfield demonstrate the seemingly endless possibilities of glass to merge color and light. Included is jewelry in gold and silver designed by artists Fletcher Benton, DeWain Valentine, and Lynda Benglis, and crystalencrusted shoes by Debra Hovel reveal how personal adornment is fascinating.

Still Life: Capturing the Moment Through Sunday, February 21, 2016 Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert The Galen and the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden
Throughout time, visual artists have delighted in the excitement of transforming commonplace objects into symbolic encounters with the world and self. Bringing together paintings, sculp-
tures, photographs, and a surprising variety of other media, this exhibition studies the powerful psychological and associational value of altering time, place, and imagery into an artistic still life. In the early twentieth century, photographers such as Cy DeCosse, Baron Adolf De Meyer, and Paul Strand focused on capturing the sensual elements of light, texture, and form in everyday life. Today, contemporary photographers including Tom Baril, Michael Childers, and John Dugdale reveal the passion to document, describe, and celebrate material pleasures and possessions.

T he weather may be cooler but the
Coachella Valley art scene is hotter than ever. So hold onto your seats…it’s going to be a steamy ride this season. Galleries will be introducing new artists and existing gallery artists will be presenting new works. There will be the usual excitement of 1st Fridays on El Paseo and 1st Wednesdays at the Backstreet District. Here is what we can expect from some of our outstanding galleries: HOHMANN Fine Art will present new works by several artists including Gerd Lieder, whose paintings depict the world through the lens of reflections using strategically placed mirrors that create a freezeframe filter through which the work can be viewed. Artist Pascal Pierme showcases new work featuring minimalist sculptures made from multiple mediums, and Palm Springs artist Robert Dunahay, best known for his Palm series depicting grand-scale palm trees in vibrant colors, will unveil his new works. Filsinger Fine Art and Fossil Gallery has a split personality: Enter the world of 50-million year-old fossils in stones including a 75’ palm frond, fossil branches, sting ray and other aquatic fossil murals. Then switch mindsets and enter a world of contemporary and classical art pieces. New additions to the gallery: Jan Guess (oil paintings) and Adam Lewis Smith (mosaic photography). March 4 a reception and exhibit for Tract Helgeson “Message as Bucolic Landscapes” will enthrall. Also, new artwork from artists Alexandr Onishenko and Tracy Lynn. Ramey Fine Art kicks off the season with the First Friday Art Walk on November 6, featuring animated acrylic and mixed media works of artist Nancy Stanchfield, accompanied by classical guitarist John Pagel. On November 7th mixed media artist 12 DESERT ART•SCENE
Delos Van Earle takes center stage and the December 4th Art Walk includes a Holiday exhibit and music by John Pagel. The works of abstract painter Eric C. Johnson and post impressionist Michael Ross will also be on display. This year Desert Art Collection & Sculpture Garden celebrates its 20th anniversary with a series of imaginative “Pop-Up” art shows presenting works by emerging new artists and established talent. These exhibits will be limited to Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, allowing the gallery to present more talent than usual. A Silent Auction benefitting Hanson House will raise funds for temporary shelter for families of critically ill or injured patients at Desert Regional Medical Center. CODA GALLERY will be introducing the works of artists who are new to the Gallery: Susan Cox (oil on canvas), Mark Lewanski (glass) Betty Spindler (ceramic), Karen Shapiro (raku ceramic), Steven Derks (metal) and Karen & Tony Barone (aluminum and steel). CODA ‘s artists in attendance will be James Corbet (mixed media-recycled auto parts) on February 27th and Charley Snow & Ben Steele (both oil on canvas) on March 12th. The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission presents the visually stunning portraits by artists and Austrian Countess llona von Ronay in the lobby of the Cathedral City Civic through December. The Countess, who was friends with Frederick Loewe, the composer of My Fair Lady and Gigi, among many of the other rich and famous, has exhibited world-wide receiving warm reviews for her ability to capture the essence of her subjects in her visually stunning masterpieces. Colin Fisher Studios opens each Art Exhibition with a delightful cocktail party. “ART IN IT’S INFINITE FORM”, opening night January 8th presents abstract impression-
ists TAIRA and Gabriel Rivera; “CLASSICALLY MODERN”, opening night February 5th pays homage to Modernism Week featuring John Luckett, Janette Dye, DOWNS and other artists; “MEN and WOMEN”, opening night March 4th and “YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME”, opening night April 1st. Classic Art Gallery features two celebrated French artists this season: Jean Trilolet studied at the Beaux Arts School and cites Cezanne and Van Gogh as his greatest influencers. His canvases capture the heart and soul of Provence with fields of lavender, red poppies, ports, creeks and Mediterranean villages. Louis Magre spent years painting nudes before turning to impressionism. His influencers are Monet, Pissaro and Sisley. His works can be found in galleries in France, Belgium and the U.S. Dwight Polen Fine Chinese Antiques offers a vast collection of one-of-a-kind decorative accessories. This season, Blue & White porcelain and stoneware accessories hand-selected in China. In February, a renowned Feng Shui master will visit the gallery to talk about the art of positioning objects. Artize Gallery, located in the bustling Backstreet Art District, celebrates its third anniversary in April. This season promises to be an exciting one offering new shows including: February’s show, “Like No Place Else,” which showcases Palm Springs’ and the Coachella Valley’s legends & landmarks and June’s show, “What If,” that focuses on what happens when artists create art by looking through the eyes of others. Monthly First Wednesday Art Walks continue throughout the year.

Joe Graziano’s main studio and exhibition space where he can be found most days working on his next creation. A self-taught artist, he first picked up a paintbrush in 1996 and created his first painting, “Pallet,” which now hangs in Studio 55. Graziano works with acrylics, and glass, separately and together. His new series called “Forever Blooming” bespoke glass pens out of exotic wood. He enjoys the diversity of his work. “For me it’s about having different vocabularies. Some people speak different languages, and that’s kind of how I feel about my art. It’s multi-lingual.” THE ART PLACE 41-801 Corporate Way Palm Desert (760) 776-2268 THE GALLERY SOHO 41-801 Corporate Way, #6 Palm Desert (760) 836-0742 VON WENING ART GALLERY The Gardens of El Paseo, 73-585 El Paseo, Suite A1132 Palm Desert (760) 340-6711 www.artbymax.com WALTER N.
