Palm Springs Art Museum Expansion Into Palm Desert The Palm Springs Art Museum announced the receipt of a $1 million gift from Helene Galen of Rancho Mirage, California, in support of the museum’s Palm Desert expansion project. The significant lead naming gift is an important component in the overall funding strategy established by the museum to provide a solid financial foundation for expansion of the institution. Slated to open in early 2012, the 8,400 square foot building was designed by famed desert architect Reuel Young and is located in Entrada del Paseo, on the corner of Hwy 111 and El Paseo (the old Visitor’s Information Center). The new museum will provide exciting exhibitions, community events, educational tours, classes and lectures for all ages. The centerpiece of the project will be the finest sculpture garden east of Los Angeles. Set in a lushly landscaped desert oasis of water features, native plants and winding walkways dotted with natural rock benches, the Palm Desert facility’s sculpture garden 4 DESERT ART•SCENE

will house the works of modern masters such as Henry Moore and Jim Dine. The interior of the building will boast four separate gallery areas that will feature rotating exhibits designed to complement the more expansive exhibits by the same artists being featured at the Palm Springs Art Museum. An additional photography gallery will display the works of local and international master photographers and multimedia artists. One of the most exciting elements of this facility will be the education wing, which will be used for art-making classes, curatorial lectures and hands-on museum experiences. In addition, this area will enable the museum to solidify partnerships with local organizations, schools and universities for after-school classes and intern/mentor programs, and provide a space for social programs for area libraries and galleries. Exhibition concepts and details about the museum’s plans for adding fine art sculptures to the building’s beautifully landscaped gardens will be announced in the coming months. “VISIONS OF THE INDIAN CANYONS” An Exhibition of Conflicting Perspectives December 7 thru October 21, 2012

The Agua Caiiente Cultural Museum exhibition takes the viewer on a photographic journey deep into the majestic beauty of the Indian Canyons of Palm Springs and tells of historical controversies surrounding Tahquitz, Andreas, Murray and Palm Canyons with photos, posters, important timelines of events, and tribal artifacts. Many people don’t know that since the early 1900s

governments have tried to take this land from the Agua Caliente people and make the canyons a national monument. Guests will learn about movies that have been filmed in the canyons, such as 1938’s “Her Jungle Love” starring Dorothy Lamour and Ray Milland, showing photos taken on the sets, which were loaned to the exhibit by Paramount pictures. Museum Curator Dawn Wellman notes that the exhibition is not only visually stimulating, but offers important insights into land struggles that are still common to tribal communities today. Admission is FREE. Open Wednesday through Saturday: 10am to 5pm. Sundays: Noon to 5pm. Located at 219 South Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs. (760) 778-1079 or www.accmuseum.org

hristian Hohmann Fine Art is pleased to announce their expansion on El Paseo into an adjoining space formerly held by Edenhurst Gallery. With a cumulative 5,000 square feet, the gallery will now present two distinct directions within its overall oeuvre. “Now we are able to better fulfill my main two passions as a gallerist,” explains Christian. “In one space we can cultivate the individual artists that we represent by focusing on in depth and singular exhibitions of their work. In the other space I can indulge my art dealer side by selling extraordinary works by twentieth century masters such as Picasso, Miró, Chagall, etc. There’s something magical about being able to present contemporary artists side by side with those who have made their marks in art history.” Two years ago, Hohmann branched out from his former role as Director of the Hart Gallery to open

The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands Public can view Annenberg Treasures to open in March 2012

T

he Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands – For nearly 50 years, Walter and Leonore Annenberg welcomed Presidents of the United State and International leaders from politics, education, science and the arts to their 200 acre Rancho Mirage estate. Opens to the public in March, offering a venue for high-level meetings of business and political leaders, as well as a glimpse at collections of fine art, Steuben glass, Chinese antiquities and silver gilt. Sunnylands is an impressive array of modern sculpture – ranging from Auguste Rodin’s Eternal Spring and Alberto Giacometti’s Bust of Diego on Stele 111 to kinetic works by Yaacov Agam and Harry Bertoia – as well as canvases and works on paper by 19th and 20th century artists, including Andrew Wyeth, who in 1978 painted a portrait of Walter Annenberg. Visitors will relax in the great room with its spectacular view of Mt. San Jacinto, enjoy the menu options in the cafe, and browse in the store. Sunnylands featured a world renowned art collection housed in an architecturally significant home surrounded by a beautifully designed golf course in a tranquil desert setting
