This is the place to actually touch a cactus, have a safe, hands-on experience with other spiky, spiny desert plants, and learn about the arid world we live in. Topics may vary depending on volunteer availability. Birds in the Garden Mondays, October – April | 8 a.m. | Mondays, May – September | 7 a.m. Join expert birders for a morning bird walk. Everyone is welcome, including first-time birders. Hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes recommended. Bring binoculars if available. Ask a Gardener Saturdays and Sundays, October – November | 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Drop by our Ask a Gardener station on the Center for Desert Living Trail where knowledgeable volunteers can help with your gardening questions. Did you know that the Desert Botanical Garden is a colossal Monarch Waystation? Celebrate native butterflies and migrating monarchs with fun activities for the whole family. Be sure to look for the more than 20 different native butterfly species fluttering throughout the Garden. Meet the Caterpillars Saturdays, October 1 – November 12 | 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Center for Desert Living Trail Meet the caterpillars that will turn into beautiful Arizona butterflies. On display will be caterpillars and chrysalises collected from the Garden. Watch them eat their host plants, molt into delicate chrysalises and, if you are lucky, emerge as magnificent butterflies. Butterfly Walks Saturdays, October 8 – November 12 | 9:30 a.m. Go on a butterfly walk with Dr. Kim Pegram, the Garden’s Insect Ecologist. Hunt for caterpillars, and learn about creating your own butterfly garden with butterfly-friendly plants. Limit 25. Meet in the Ottosen Entry Garden. No registration required. First come, first served. Butterfly Garden in a BoxTM Fall Plant Sale, October 14 – 16 No admission charge Are you looking to attract butterflies to your yard? The Butterfly Garden in a Box provides gardeners with the essentials for a backyard butterfly garden: nectar plants, host plants (food for the caterpillars) and wildflower seeds, along with planting instructions.

Cuisine and Culture: The Art of Margarita Cabrera Friday, October 7 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dorrance Hall and Ottosen Gallery Members: $59 General Public: $74 Margarita Cabrera comes to the Garden with a project entitled Space in Between. Meet the artist and learn about art, Mexican cuisine, dance and storytelling. Appetizers from Los Sombreros will be served, and guests will receive a welcome drink upon arrival. Margarita Cabrera: Space in Between Oct. 7, 2016 – Feb. 12, 2017 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Daily Ottosen Gallery in Dorrance Hall Space in Between is a collaboration between artist Margarita Cabrera, the Arizona State University Art Museum and Desert Botanical Garden. Cabrera’s project is a continuation of her ongoing work with Latino communities.

Arizona Storytellers: Identity and Immigration
Space in Between centers on the creation of artworks and promotion of cultural dialogues revolving around themes related to community, craft, immigration, cultural identity, labor practices and sustainability.
Thursday, October 27 | 7 - 9 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dorrance Center
Cabrera will lead workshops with communities from the Arizona region to create soft sculptures of desert plants made from recycled Border Patrol uniforms and embroidered with personal stories of immigration. The artwork will be displayed at the Desert Botanical Garden, and will be the launch for a national traveling exhibition the following year.

With more than 30,000 plants for sale at this bustling marketplace, the Garden’s Fall Plant Sale is the perfect place to shop for cacti, succulents, trees, shrubs, groundcover, perennials and herbs/veggies that can transform your garden. Garden volunteers and staff horticulturists will be available to answer questions, assist in plant selections and offer advice. This fall’s sale will include more bare-root cactus and succulent choices, unusual Garden-grown cuttings and divisions from our own collection, premium bagged cactus soil, and an emphasis on plants for butterfly and hummingbird gardens. Specimensized plants and delivery services will be available. Pottery, art and other specialty products will be offered from a wide variety of retail artisans. The Great Pumpkin Festival Friday, October 21 | 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Sat. and Sun., October 22 & 23 | 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Located in the Garden’s Events Plaza, Pumpkin Patch and adjoining Community Garden. Included with membership or paid Garden admission. Children under three are free. Celebrate a fall tradition with Desert Botanical Garden and carve new memories at The Great Pumpkin Festival. Take a hayride out to the Garden’s Pumpkin Patch, where children 12 and under can find a perfect pumpkin to take home! Attempt the amazing hay bale maze, decorate your pumpkin and visit the Community Garden to see how pumpkins and other vegetables grow. In the Garden’s Events Plaza, test your skills on carnival-style games, dance to family entertainment, meet adorable farm animals and purchase pony rides. Day of the Dead at the Garden Included with membership or paid Garden admission.
Join us for the 14th annual Garden celebration of Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This colorful tradition, celebrated throughout the American Southwest, Latin America and Mexico, honors departed loved ones in a festival setting. Ofrenda Exhibition October 21 – November 2 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Webster Auditorium Ofrenda, or Offering, is part of the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos. To honor those who have passed away, an altar is placed in the home and adorned with photographs, flowers, decorations, lit candles, food and drink. This act of preparing an altar of offerings to the dead helps transform grief into acceptance. View original Ofrenda installations by Arizona artists that have been created specifically for this exhibition. Día de los Muertos Celebration Saturday and Sunday, October 29 & 30 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Procession each day 5 - 6 p.m. Celebrate Día de los Muertos with the Garden at this two-day family-oriented festival that uses music, dance and storytelling to explore the beauty and meaning of this special holiday. Children will love the crafts and face painting. The whole family will enjoy entertainment along with browsing the Mercado filled with art, jewelry and other wares. Each day ends with La Procesión. Based on an ancient tradition, guests and performers will march as a community through the Garden to honor the departed. La Procesión concludes with a traditional burning of penas (sorrows). Programming subject to change.

Dogs’ Day in the Garden Come. Sit. Play.
Saturday, November 5 | 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Included with membership or paid Garden admission. $4 admission per dog, with proceeds benefiting the Arizona Humane Society. Take advantage of this special opportunity to bring the whole family, dogs included, to the Garden. Go for a walk on Garden trails, meet other dog lovers and heel for photo opportunities. Learn about local dog-related nonprofits, shop and enjoy samples with your pup, and experience hands-on, canine-themed activities. Don’t miss this tail-wagging good time! PLEASE NOTE: All dogs must be on a leash and remain on marked trails at all times. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and license. Handlers must pick up after their dogs and properly dispose of their waste. Desert Botanical Garden reserves the right to refuse entry to or remove any dog thought to be dangerous to other dogs or visitors. Dogs will only be admitted to the Garden between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dogs will not be allowed in Gertrude’s or the Garden Shop. Programming subject to change.
