DID YOU KNOW that the Desert Botanical Garden is a colossal Monarch Waystation? Celebrate native butterflies and migrating monarchs with fun activities for the whole family. Be sure to look for the more than 20 different native butterfly species fluttering throughout the Garden.

MEET THE CATERPILLARS Saturdays, October 1 – November 12 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Center for Desert Living Trail Meet the caterpillars that will turn into beautiful Arizona butterflies. On display will be caterpillars and chrysalises collected from the Garden. Watch them eat their host plants, molt into delicate chrysalises and, if you are lucky, emerge as magnificent butterflies.

BUTTERFLY WALKS Saturdays, October 8 – November 12 | 9:30 a.m. Go on a butterfly walk with Dr. Kim Pegram, the Garden’s Insect Ecologist. Hunt for caterpillars, and learn about creating your own butterfly garden with butterfly-friendly plants. Limit 25. Meet in the Ottosen Entry Garden. No registration required. First come, first served.

BUTTERFLY GARDEN IN A BOXTM Fall Plant Sale, October 14 – 16 No admission charge Are you looking to attract butterflies to your yard? The Butterfly Garden in a Box provides gardeners with the essentials for a backyard butterfly garden: nectar plants, host plants (food for the caterpillars) and wildflower seeds, along with planting instructions. DAY OF THE DEAD AT THE GARDEN

Included with membership or paid Garden admission. Join us for the 14th annual Garden celebration of Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead. This colorful tradition, celebrated throughout the American Southwest, Latin America and Mexico, honors departed loved ones in a festival setting.

OFRENDA EXHIBITION October 21 – November 2 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Webster Auditorium Ofrenda, or Offering, is part of the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos. To honor those who have passed away, an altar is placed in the home and adorned with photographs, flowers, decorations, lit candles, food and drink. This act of preparing an altar of offerings to the dead helps transform grief into acceptance. View original Ofrenda installations by Arizona artists that have been created specifically for this exhibition.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Procession each day 5 - 6 p.m. Celebrate Día de los Muertos with the Garden at this two-day family-oriented festival that uses music, dance and storytelling to explore the beauty and meaning of this special holiday. Children will love the crafts and face painting. The whole family will enjoy entertainment along with browsing the Mercado filled with art, jewelry and other wares. Each day ends with La Procesión. Based on an ancient tradition, guests and performers will march as a community through the Garden to honor the departed. La Procesión concludes with a traditional burning of penas (sorrows). Included with membership or paid Garden admission. Space in Between is a collaboration between artist Margarita Cabrera, the Arizona State University Art Museum and Desert Botanical Garden. Cabrera’s project is a continuation of her ongoing work with Latino communities. Space in Between centers on the creation of artworks and promotion of cultural dialogues revolving around themes related to community, craft, immigration, cultural identity, labor practices and sustainability. Cabrera will lead workshops with communities from the Arizona region to create soft sculptures of desert plants made from recycled Border Patrol uniforms and embroidered with personal stories of immigration. The artwork will be displayed at Desert Botanical Garden, and will be the launch for a national traveling exhibition the following year. Additional support for the project is provided by the CALA Alliance, National Endowment for the Arts, The Institute of Museum and Library Services, Museums for America Grant Number MA-20-14-0236-14, Mexican Consulate, Southwest Key, and Latino youth from the Phoenix community.

DESERT TERRACE GARDEN Dramatic displays of the Garden’s distinctive collections, including signature agaves, boojum trees, dyckia and cycads, allow one to simultaneously view plants from above, below and at eye-level. Bold plantings are complemented by panoramic views of the red buttes of Papago Park.

JAN AND TOM LEWIS DESERT PORTAL From the canyon-like enclosure of the Desert Terrace Garden, visitors emerge into the Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal—the central hub of the Desert Discovery Loop Trail. Enjoy shade from an iconic, architectural trellis. Elegantly designed plantings feature a cottage-style arrangement of perennials and desert blooming shrubs with sweeps of seasonal color.

SAM & BETTY KITCHELL FAMILY HERITAGE GARDEN North of the historic Webster Center are the Garden’s original plantings from 1939. Completed in February 2016, this area is now transformed and features three unique areas: the Cardon Plaza, the Fine Family Contemplation Garden and the Botanist Garden.

New Butterfly Pavilion to Open in March 2017 The Garden is delighted to announce that a new butterfly exhibit will open in March 2017, thanks to generous donors to The Saguaro Initiative. This seasonal pavilion will be located off the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail, and will highlight the entire life cycle of the butterfly. Currently under construction, the new Center will open in spring 2017. It will provide Garden scientists and horticulturists with optimal greenhouse facilities to care for a world-class plant collection and increased capacity to support desert plant conservation work in the field. Members, visitors and industry professionals will have opportunities for behind-the-scenes tours, workshops and classes about the art and science of nurturing plants.

DOGS’ DAY IN THE GARDEN COME. SIT. PLAY.

Saturday, November 5 | 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. Included with membership or paid Garden admission. $4 admission per dog, with proceeds benefiting the Arizona Humane Society. Take advantage of this special opportunity to bring the whole family, dogs included, to the Garden. Go for a walk on Garden trails, meet other dog lovers, and heel for photo opportunities. Learn about local dog-related nonprofits, shop and enjoy samples with your pup, and experience hands-on, canine-themed activities. Don’t miss this tail-wagging good time! PLEASE NOTE: All dogs must be on a leash and remain on marked trails at all times. Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and license. Handlers must pick up after their dogs and properly dispose of their waste. Desert Botanical Garden reserves the right to refuse entry to or remove any dog thought to be dangerous to other dogs or visitors. Dogs will only be admitted to the Garden between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dogs will not be allowed in Gertrude’s or the Garden Shop. Programming subject to change.

THE DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN MISSION The Garden’s commitment to the community is to advance excellence in education, research, exhibition, and conservation of desert plants of the world with emphasis on the Southwestern United States. We will ensure that the Garden is always a compelling attraction that brings to life the many wonders of the desert. The Desert Botanical Garden sits on 140 acres and has more than 50,000 plants in its collection. The Garden has five thematic trails that exhibit cactus and succulent species from around the world. Interpretive exhibits along the trails highlight desert wildflowers, conservation, desert plant adaptation and ethnobotany.

Since 1939, the Desert Botanical Garden has been home to one of the finest and most diverse collections of succulent plants, including rare, threatened and endangered species from around the Southwest and the world. It is the only botanical garden in the world whose mission, from its early inception, was to focus solely on desert plants.
