SPRING – SUMMER 2015 EVENTS AT DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN
THE SAGUARO INITIATIVE NOW OPEN Opened on the Desert Discovery Loop Trail in November 2014, the Garden is excited to present two new, permanent exhibits generously funded through The Saguaro Initiative.
DESERT TERRACE GARDEN A curvilinear path leads Garden visitors through a series of dramatic, tiered planters that allow one to simultaneously view plants from above, below and at eye-level. Dramatic displays of the Garden’s distinct collections include signature agaves, boojum trees, dyckia and cycads. Bold plantings are complimented by panoramic views of the red buttes of Papago Park.
JAN AND TOM LEWIS DESERT PORTAL From the canyon-like enclosure of the Desert Terrace Garden, Garden visitors emerge into the Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal — the central hub of the Desert Discovery Loop Trail — to enjoy elegantly designed plantings and shade from an iconic, architectural trellis. Plantings feature a cottage-style arrangement of perennials and desert blooming shrubs showcasing sweeps of seasonal color. From the Portal, visitors may select the eastern path to discover the Sybil B. Harrington Cactus and Succulent Galleries and Berlin Agave Yucca Forest, or continue south to the Center for Desert Living Trail and Webster Center.
COMING SOON HERITAGE GARDEN North of historic Webster Center are the Garden’s original plantings from 1939. Renovations starting in the summer of 2015 will transform this area into the Heritage Garden with two unique areas: the Contemplation Garden and the Cardon Plaza. Opening in the fall of 2015, this new space is generously funded by donors to The Saguaro Initiative.
BEYOND THE GARDEN GATES In addition to enhancing our exhibitions and experiences on site for visitors, the Garden is reaching out into the community through active Central Arizona Conservation Alliance partnerships to study, restore and promote the metro Phoenix desert mountain parks. We invite you to learn about the Garden’s conservation activities and other projects of The Saguaro initiative. Please visit saguaroinitiative.dbg.org. SAVE THE DATE: TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2015

THE DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN MISSION The Garden’s commitment to the community is to advance excellence in education, research, exhibition, and conservation of desert plants of the world with emphasis on the Southwestern United States. We will ensure that the Garden is always a compelling attraction that brings to life the many wonders of the desert. The Desert Botanical Garden sits on 140 acres and has more than 50,000 plants in its collection. The Garden has five thematic trails that exhibit cactus and succulent species from around the world.
Interpretive exhibits along the trails highlight desert wildflowers, conservation, desert plant adaptation and ethnobotany. Since 1939, the Desert Botanical Garden has been home to one of the finest and most diverse collections of succulent plants, including rare, threatened and endangered species from around the Southwest and the world. It is the only botanical garden in the world whose mission, from its early inception, was to focus solely on desert plants.
