These individualists, transplants from Sweden and Vermont, joined forces with other plant enthusiasts in the 1930s to build a garden that showcased and protected the beauty of the Sonoran Desert for future generations. Our dynamic founders established a strong culture of plant conservation and philanthropy, with a spirit of innovation that lives on today in the Garden’s board leaders, volunteers, staff, members, and donors. In the pages that follow, we honor our founders’ tradition and vision by highlighting just a few of last year’s activities that embody their values. Garden staff especially enjoyed creating messages of thanks to generous and committed supporters, which appear on the pages of In Appreciation.

Dear Garden members and friends, From its inception more than 75 years ago, the Garden has flourished because of the culture of philanthropy that was established by founder Gertrude Divine Webster. She donated her time, was a stalwart advocate for the Garden, and supported the Garden financially. Today, 821 Volunteers in the Garden donate more than 66,075 hours of service each year, the 38 members of the Board of Trustees are tireless stewards for the Garden, and each of 40,000 member households, along with all the donors listed in this publication, contribute generous financial support to the Garden. A culture of philanthropy cannot be sustained without the sincere gratitude of the beneficiaries of that giving. In that spirit—and on behalf of our entire staff, our board, and our volunteers—we thank you for your membership in the Garden, for your contributions to The Saguaro Initiative, and for the multitude of other ways you support the four-fold mission of education, exhibition, research, and conservation of desert plants and habitats. The Garden’s Board has a tradition of conservative fiscal management. In last year’s report, we described how we had invested significant funds, including an increase in debt, in preparation for the Chihuly in the Garden exhibition. Now, one year later, we are happy to report that those investments have paid off significantly because of the success of the Chihuly exhibit. As presented in the accompanying financial statements dated September 30, 2014, the Garden ended its fiscal year in a healthy financial position. Total revenues were $22,817,189, representing an increase of 50% over the previous year. Net income from all sources, less all operating expenses, was $6,184,254. This amount includes unrealized gains in the endowment, revenue from restricted grants for future projects, and excludes depreciation expense. Net income from operations alone, excluding the factors above and other non-operational expenditures, was $2,864,152. The Statement of Financial Position shows total Garden assets increased during the year by $4,242,457, or 12%. Total debt held by the Garden decreased substantially (by more than 50%) and now totals $1,125,000.

As we look to the coming year, the Garden’s operations—and therefore its financial statements— will return to more traditional levels. In the 2014-15 season two wonderful new permanent exhibits came on line: The Desert Terrace Garden and the Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal. Construction on two more compelling new features will begin this year: the Heritage Garden and a state-of-the-art Horticulture Center. All of these new facilities are made possible by generous supporters to The Saguaro Initiative. As we write this letter, more than $11 million in gifts and pledges toward the $18 million goal has already been received. Today, we are a strong and successful botanical garden because of you. With your continued support, we will grow even stronger by serving more members of our diverse and vibrant community. We will grow by helping educate and develop greater science literacy in school children, university students, and adult learners. We will grow by conserving resources, native plants, and natural environments. And, we will grow by presenting even more exhibits that celebrate the unique beauty, wonder and culture of our home, the Sonoran Desert. With best wishes,

EXHIBIT OPENINGS Desert Terrace Garden & the Jan and Tom Lewis Desert Portal Completed in November 2014 and officially opened in January 2015, these new exhibits fulfill the first two of the ten major goals of The Saguaro Initiative. Made possible by a generous donation from Jan and Tom Lewis, the Lewis Desert Portal welcomes visitors with a striking trellis structure. Both exhibits feature a number of stunning plant specimens acquired thanks to a significant grant from the FreeportMcMoRan Foundation. Tiered planters throughout the exhibit allow Garden visitors the opportunity to simultaneously view plants from above, below, and at eye-level. Both the spaces feature unique sculptural forms, including dense plantings of Dyckia, Mexican cycads, and Agaves.

Heritage Garden & Horticulture Center Diverse teams of Garden trustees, volunteers, staff, community representatives, and outside experts worked throughout the past year to develop plans and architectural designs for the next two major projects. Heritage Garden Construction will begin in June and will be completed fall 2015 with an opening celebration in January 2016. Heritage Garden interpretation will reflect the Garden’s vision and stewardship, emphasizing: PEOPLE – our founders, plant collectors, botanists, and donors;
PLANTS – stories about our diverse and remarkable collection of cacti and agave, including plants discovered by Garden scientists; PLACE – celebrating the beauty and unique landscape of the Sonoran Desert. Horticulture Center Replacing aging and inadequate greenhouses to provide optimal conditions and care for the world class plant collection, Phase I of the Horticulture Center master plan will be constructed over a 15-month period. The Horticulture Learning Center, Greenhouse I and Desert Conservation Laboratories are anticipated to open in November 2016. The planning team involved in the Center’s integrated design process is committed to sustainable design and practices “Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design” (LEED) and “Living Building” principles to work with nature, respect water as a precious resource, reduce energy usage with the goal of net zero energy impact, as well as respect our sense of place and identity in the Sonoran Desert.

GARDEN SCIENTISTS Naming of Species What do Antarctic killer whales and Arizona agaves have in common? They are what scientists call cryptic species—species originally thought to be as few as one, but, upon further scientific inquiry, are found to actually be several. Each individual species fills a different ecological niche, which is an important piece of information about killer whales and agaves for those people interested in their well-being.
The Grand Canyon agave, Agave phillipsiana, is one such example of a cryptic species, described as new to science by Garden researcher Wendy Hodgson. Not only is it a newly described species, it joins a growing list of newly named agaves that represent plants grown by pre-Columbian farmers hundreds of years ago. First “discovered” in the Grand Canyon, Agave phillipsiana occurs in Verde Valley, near Prescott and Tonto Basin—all important pre-Columbian settlements. Such research supports the theory that Arizona was an important area for agave cultivation and domestication, and that landscapes and plants have intriguing stories to tell—if we ask the right questions.
Seed Photography Laboratory To most people, seeds are simple structures capable of turning into amazing plants. The casual observer may even find them indistinguishable from a tiny rock or a piece of sand. There is much more to these plant structures than we realize, however, and quite often they are as beautiful as the plants that emerge from them. A gift from Garden supporter Barbara Gant has allowed the Research, Conservation and Collections Department to create the Seed Photography Laboratory, or SPL, to digitally capture the finest details of the Garden’s seed collection. The SPL consists of the latest in
digital macrophotography technology, along with a state-of-the-art computer and software capable of producing high-resolution digital images that capture details throughout the entire depth of the subject being photographed. Botanists have long valued the uniqueness of individual seeds, often using their variable traits to assist in the classification or identification of species. Steve Blackwell, conservation collections manager, oversees the SPL and hopes the seed images produced here will persuade non-scientists of the wondrous physical nature of seeds. Images from the SPL will be shared with scientists and the public through the Garden’s plant database at livingcollections.org/dbg. In addition to funding the creation of the SPL, Barbara has also provided a new home for the Garden’s seed collection with the gift of a brand new seed freezer. Her generosity will provide sub-zero storage suitable for the long-term preservation of the Garden’s entire collection of wild seeds.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS Community Gardening Initiative Thanks to generous grant support from The Steele Foundation, the Desert Botanical Garden’s Community Garden (DBG CG) was established in 2012. Staff and volunteers have now completed four successful planting seasons. In July 2014, CG participants decided to implement a strength-based, COOP management model, giving participants the option of contributing to a diverse set of tasks and equally sharing in the produce—mirroring a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program.
As of November 2014, 71% of the plots are dedicated to the COOP with 15 participants utilizing 88% of the plots to cultivate vegetables. Participants regularly contribute excess produce to a local food bank. Beyond the onsite community garden, we are working with partners in south Phoenix neighborhoods affected by high poverty and chronic disease rates. Recent data reports that 91% of the students in the Roosevelt School District are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The Garden is lending talent and support to CUSP, “Cultivate South Phoenix,” a coalition of 24 organizations working to develop a 20-acre vacant lot owned by this school district. Its goal is to create a community-driven “food hub” that will provide fresh and healthy produce to south Phoenix residents, to local farmer’s markets and to become one of Arizona’s first farm-to-school initiatives.
Horticulture Internship Through the vision and generosity of Trustee Emerita Nancy Swanson, an internship program was created in 2012, in tandem with Arizona State University, to fund a paid internship opportunity for an outstanding undergraduate student during each semester. Nancy saw a need for an internship that focused on providing students with hands-on experiences in
horticulture and sustainability. This internship allows students, under the supervision and direction of Horticulture staff, to work on sustainability-related projects including research, design, rainwater harvesting, and urban farming. Since the program’s inception, the Garden has had eight interns and thanks to Nancy the Garden will continue to offer horticulture internships to students for many more years which helps to ensure support of the Garden’s mission into the future.
EDUCATION COLLABORATIONS Sonoran Desert Adventure and Expect More Arizona Every fall we anticipate the beginning of the Sonoran Desert Adventure (SDA) field trip program with the excitement of school-aged children returning to the Garden. In late summer we buy supplies, hire garden educators, review lesson plans, and prepare staff for the onset of students arriving in droves of buses, visiting the Marshall Butterfly Pavilion, and experiencing the wonder of nature through our plant collection. Over the years, we have enhanced the program with the additions of the
online digital curriculum and STEAM- based tours using plants and art. By September, the schedule starts to fill with many teachers and schools returning for an SDA field trip that engages their students, using the Garden as an outdoor classroom. One of the biggest factors in a student’s development is learning with a trusted adult. We have partnered with Expect More Arizona and 22 other cultural organizations across the state to create site-specific learning opportunities. Activities engage the adult and child in rich and meaningful conversations that promote pre-literacy skills such as vocabulary, storytelling, observation, recall, and phonics. With the generous support from donors John and Carolyn Stuart, preparing children for their academic future is not only accomplished in schools and at home, but also through cultural institutions like the Garden.

The Statement of Activities above reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike industrial firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2014 and 2013 was $1,183,000 and $1,090,000 respectively.
