The mutually reinforcing paths of education and research grew this year, planting seeds of curiosity along the way. Greehouse West and the Marley Horticulture Learning Lab, both in the Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science, are sparkling examples. In addition, investigations of nocturnal Garden wonders by flashlight fascinated thousands of guests. In the conservation realm, we became the host institute for an international group that will focus on protection of the world’s most vulnerable cacti. The Garden also actively supported many regional initiatives, by which conservation efforts helped ensure community preservation and sustainability. Finally, exhibitions shined like never before. We examined both the nature of art and the art of nature. Performance and visual art melded with our curated landscape—by way of Margarita Cabrera’s soft sculptures, through Ballet Arizona’s dance stagings, and embedded in the magnificent, shimmering Bruce Munro installations—to the delight of many thousands.
Your gifts to the Garden, like rays of sunshine, fueled the important work we do. Daily, our volunteers and donors have cultivated and harvested the resultant abundance.

TRANSCENDANT adventures Bruce Munro Sonoran Light
The Garden was aglow with the work of visual artist Bruce Munro’s Sonoran Light. Featuring eight large-scale installations, the exhibit used an array of materials, including hundreds of miles of glowing fiber optics. The British artist’s recurrent motif uses light on an environmental scale to evoke an emotional response for the viewer. Munro’s installations are based on his direct response to a location, its history and geography, and to the temporal experience of passing across a landscape. Woven through cacti, aloes and agaves, the exhibit laced all those threads together as the artist created a progression through time and place that is exclusive to our location.
It was like stardust had fallen to light pathways on our own little garden corner of the desert. GARDEN PATRON

Margarita Cabrera Space in Between
The exhibition Space in Between was a continued exploration of a project started by artist Margarita Cabrera in Houston. It showcased artwork created by many different members of the Latino community. Guided by Cabrera, they told their individual stories of immigration in the art. The purpose of the artistic collaboration between Cabrera and local residents was to explore a dialogue, revolving around themes of community, craft, immigration, cultural identity, labor practices and sustainability. Cabrera led workshops with communities from Arizona to create soft sculptures of desert plants made from recycled Border Patrol uniforms.
From the beginning, it made sense to collaborate with the Garden as the sculptures derive from cacti, and I am interested in understanding the plants through working with specialists in horticulture, botany and the plant sciences.
MARGARITA CABRERA
This exhibition was a collaboration between the artist, ASU Art Museum and the Garden. Additional project supporters include CALA Alliance, National Endowment for the Arts, The Institute of Museum and Library Services, Mexican Consulate, Southwest Key and Latino youth from the Phoenix community.

7,892 number of attendees
The event is all the more spectacular because it is staged in the Desert Botanical Garden here, with cacti-like monuments, lush trees, bright flowers and isolated peaks on the horizon.
An illuminated desert landscape served as backdrop to Ballet Arizona’s “Round.” In keeping with the title, the piece was staged in-the-round. The dancers were surrounded by audience members and the Sonoran Desert. “Round” featured Ib Andersen’s “modern ballet choreography” set to classical composers that included Thomas Ades, J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. The spring performance was the company’s third installment of ballet at the Garden with another production scheduled for May 2017 and additional productions scheduled through 2020.

CONSERVATION beacon International Union for Conservation of Nature Since reporting the cactus family as one of the five most threatened groups of living organisms in the world, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) needed a partner to help protect the vulnerable cactus family. A partnership was born in October 2015 when the Garden was invited to serve as the host institute for the IUCN Cactus and Succulent Specialist Group, elevating our work as leaders in the world’s cactus conservation efforts.

PLANTING enlightenment Hazel Hare Center for Plant Science Funded by The Saguaro Initiative. The new 85,000-square-foot horticulture campus is now the heart of Desert Botanical Garden. This multi-phased project broke ground in February 2016. Phase 1 of the project opened March 2017.
potted plants were temporarily relocated for construction of Greenhouse West
The Hare Center is where Garden staff, researchers and volunteers are at work growing, studying and taking care of a world-class collection of desert plants, many of which are rare or endangered. The new Center exemplifies Desert Botanical Garden’s long-standing spirit of innovation by incorporating smart design with the concept of multiuse spaces. The Center also offers behind-the-scenes tours. The tours show visitors unique horticultural practices used by Garden staff and volunteers to care for our desert plants in a sustainable way. The new facility honors community philanthropist and Garden Trustee Emerita, Hazel Hare, who passed away in 2016.

Spaces of Opportunity Funded by The Saguaro Initiative.
The Spaces of Opportunity project aligns with the Steele Foundation’s priorities of community building and helping with basic needs and job development. We are impressed with how this project can galvanize neighborhoods and our partner organizations.
Spaces of Opportunity shines a light on the food inequality of south Phoenix. This community initiative is converting an 18-acre parcel of land into a community-based farm to provide fresh, affordable produce to the community and transition this region of Phoenix from a food desert to a food oasis. Spaces of Opportunity includes a partnership between Desert Botanical Garden, Roosevelt School District, Cultivate South Phoenix and Vitalyst Health Foundation.

Volunteers Name an Agave Garden volunteers received an invitation to name a recently discovered plant. After much deliberation, there was a threeway tie for Agave saladoense, submitted by Clif Sawyer, Helen Bootsma and John Soper. This name was selected because the Salado people long ago lived in the area where the agave grows and more than likely farmed the plant as a crop. The name for the Agave was officially announced on April 17, 2016. Agave saladoense facts: • The plant was discovered and described by Wendy Hodgson, senior research botanist and herbarium curator, and Andrew Salywon, associate research botanist and herbarium curator • This agave species was found in the Sierra Ancha Mountains foothills and was determined to be a plant apparently domesticated by pre-Columbian peoples

Desert Botanical Garden ANNUAL REPORT 2016
FINANCIAL report Desert Botanical Garden’s fiscal year is from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. We are pleased to share with members, donors and friends the Garden’s financial statements for the year ended Sept. 30, 2016. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities shows total revenues for the year exceeded total expenses by more than $9 million. This very strong performance is the result of three, non-repeating factors. First, the successful run of Bruce Munro’s Sonoran Light exhibit nearly doubled annual admissions revenue. Second, The Saguaro Initiative (TSI) with a total campaign goal of $18 million raised nearly $3.1 million in fiscal year 2016. And third, the Garden received a bequest of more than $3.5 million from the estate of Trustee Emerita Hazel Hare. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Position shows the Garden’s fiscal position remains healthy. Unrestricted cash and Board-designated cash are sufficient for normal operations without use of external credit, and provides funds for repair and maintenance of major building systems as facilities age. The Garden Foundation manages endowment assets conservatively with an annual target of a 4.5 percent distribution from the Foundation to the Garden’s operating budget. The Garden’s total debt of $705,000 represents just 1.6 percent of total combined assets of the Garden and Foundation. The Garden’s financial health and its success in achieving its mission would not be possible without your commitment, dedication and generosity. On behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers, we extend our gratitude for all that you do for the Garden. With best wishes,
Ken Schutz

Desert Botanical Garden is committed to full transparency in financial stewardship. Our complete audited financial statements are posted on the website. There you will find annual filings with the IRS. Please visit dbg.org to review these documents. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2016 was $1,346,000.
