In this program, students get expert training in best practices for planting and pruning, as plenty of hands-on learning opportunities. Ideal for homeowners and professionals who plan to install and care for landscape plants in the desert, including how to diagnose and treat plant disorders.

Using the Garden as an outdoor classroom, take advantage of our living library to learn how to identify commonly used desert plants. Insightful horticulturists with deep knowledge of the Garden’s collection guide students through making informed plant selections and placements. Ideal for professionals and homeowners, this program is a building block for any desert landscaping or gardening project. This program covers easy-to-grow wildflowers, soil preparation, how and when to water and other maintenance tasks, and includes demonstrations, followed by guided instruction on the Garden trails. Lower your water bill—and help the planet—one drip at a time by designing an efficient drip irrigation system that you can modify as your plants grow and mature. Discover proper zones for plant materials, soils and microclimates, as well as how to maintain the system over time. From the windowsill herb box to the patio tomato pot, container gardening can bring a bountiful harvest to those with spatial limitations. This step-by-step class weeds out the Southwest’s unique obstacles to growing edibles in containers and offers tips for choosing potting soil, watering, mulching and when and where seasonal greens grow best. Small Cactus for Small Gardens Monday | Sept. 24 | 6 - 8 p.m. Members: $30 | General Public: $38 Bedecked with little flower crowns and covered with fuzzy hairs, small cactus can be hard not to pet. Fortunately, there are other ways to express our affection for cactus that thrive at small sizes. In this class, learn how to select these unique species and understand their soil, potting, watering and sunlight requirements. They are fast and easy to grow—even in containers—if you know how to tend to their basic horticultural needs. The search for habitable environments and for life on other worlds is a major driving force for the exploration of the solar system. Join Professor Jim Bell from ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration to explore the short list of worlds around us that may once have been (and perhaps still are) habitable: Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, Saturn’s moons Titan and Enceladus, and more. During the last decade scientists have also discovered an amazing diversity of life on our own planet, thriving in what were once considered hostile conditions. They are not only the fastest vertebrate on the planet; they are incredible predators in their own right. Once commonly referred to as duck hawks, peregrine falcons take a variety of prey, including many bird species much larger than themselves. Listed as an endangered species just a few decades ago, peregrines have made an incredible recovery and were removed from the endangered species list in 1999. Prominent Leaders of Native America Thursday | Nov. 15 | 6 - 8 p.m. Members: $27 | General Public: $34 Native peoples have produced some of the most renowned military, political and spiritual leaders known to humanity. Explore the concept of leadership, how it existed generally among a variety of American Indian nations, and the lives of particular individuals who rose to leadership roles with the context of their times. Emphasis will be on noted leaders from Southwestern nations, such as Manuelito, Alchesay, Geronimo and Carlos Montezuma, although we will also explore the lives of other significant native leaders such as Susan La Flesche Picotte and Sacheen Littlefeather. The History of Red: Cochineal Monday | Nov. 12 | 6 - 8 p.m. Members: $27 | General Public: $34 When archaeologists uncovered the ancient frescoes in the pre-Columbian buildings at Mitla in Oaxaca, they found well-preserved images bursting with bright red color. The early Zapotecs who made those pictures painted them with carmine dye, which they made from the ground-up bodies of the cochineal insect. Learn about the many historic and current uses of this remarkable coloration with Dr. Ken Sweat from ASU’s School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. Limit 30.
