During the summer monsoon season sunsets glow with vibrant colors that photographers dream about and the Garden offers a great vantage point to capture them. Learn the best settings and techniques for photographing sunsets and lightning with Joanne West and then use the Garden for a hands-on sunset shoot session. Weather permitting we may be fortunate to capture lightning as well. Participants should bring DSLR or mirrorless camera, wide-angle or moderate zoom lens, cable or remote shutter release and tripod. Limit 12.
Elevate your photography from everyday snapshots to dynamic and engaging storytelling tools. Scott English Milam breaks down examples of the main shot types that make up visual storytelling and share tips and tricks for shooting on the fly. Transform your thermometer into a mosaic masterpiece. Join artist David Jarvinen to bedazzle a thermometer with porcelain and glass tiles. Encased in a metal housing, the thermometer will be affixed to a 10x12-inch weatherproof panel and hanger. This project will work for all climates and is stable through freeze and thaw conditions. Most Americans have heard of Billy the Kid, Johnny Ringo and Ike Clanton, but they probably don’t know why these men were immortalized while once-famous outlaws like Billy Stiles, Bill Brazelton and Pearl Hart sank into oblivion a decade after they committed their crimes. This course examines the politics, economics and social issues that created the stage robbers and gun fighters, as well as dance hall girls, “soiled doves” and madams like Big Nose Kate— Doc Holliday’s girlfriend. The course includes an annotated bibliography and we will examine the phenomenon of instant myth-making unique to the American West. Instructed by Jim Turner. Limit 30.

Remembering Phoenix

For centuries, many plant species found in the Sonoran Desert have been used for food, as components in religious ceremonies and as poisons—for benign and diabolic purposes. Covering plants from the highly nutritious mesquite bean to the hallucinogenic and often fatal sacred Datura, this class will explore a collection of the local plants used for such purposes by both native and modern cultures. Instructed by Ken Sweat from ASU’s School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Limit 30.
Using his book Historic Photos of Phoenix as a guide, ASU’s Bob Stump Endowed Professor of History Eduardo Pagán will take you through a tour of Phoenix as it once was, sharing how the town was founded, why it grew and what contributed to its becoming one of the largest metropolises in the country. During the course, students hear stories about the individuals, buildings, and organizations featured in Pagán’s book. Limit 30.

These social creatures have evolved amazing abilities to thrive in the varied landscapes of the Grand Canyon State. Bats Wednesday | Aug. 22 | 6 - 8:30 p.m. Members: $22 | General Public: $28 Though bats may seem scary, they are actually quite beneficial, eating a vast number of harmful insects. There are more than 28 species of bats in Arizona, where bat populations appear stable and even at times increasing. Join Randy Babb, from Arizona Game and Fish Department, and learn more about these fascinating flying friends and how we can protect them. Then we will head out to the Garden to see these flying creatures at dusk. Limit 30.
Ecology of the Boojum Tree Scorpions Wednesday | Aug. 8 | 6:30 - 8 p.m. Members: $22 | General Public: $28 Take a black light into your backyard at night and you might discover a few scorpion neighbors. While some are poisonous, most of these crawly critters prefer to keep to themselves, and some even rid us of other insect pests. While boojum trees are common in some parts of this desert, most people have never seen one, and even research on the plant is thin.
