the year in review Dear Garden Friends and Members, Conservation. Education. Exhibition. Research. These are the four pillars of the Garden’s mission, and 2012 brought much success in each of these key areas. • Perhaps the most exciting happening of the year was major support for the Garden’s new Conservation Alliance—a consortium of non-profit organizations, city and county parks, and citizen volunteers. The Alliance will provide stewardship for urban mountain parks in Maricopa County, the City of Phoenix and Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve. • Our signature education program, the Desert Landscaper School, was completely redesigned and launched anew in the fall of 2012. It kept the best of the “old school,” i.e. extensive contact with the Garden’s horticultural staff, and added innovative teaching and learning strategies for more than 50 students enrolled in the yearlong course. • Traveling exhibits in 2012 included the presentation of many fantastic and whimsical sculptures by Arizona artist Carolina Escobar, and the larger-than-life installation by Philip Hass, The Four Seasons. The newly renovated and expanded Center for Desert Living Trail opened in the fall to rave reviews. • The Garden’s research department was able to expand its programs, ending the calendar year with construction of a new 1,200 sq. ft. molecular science lab. Plans to outfit the lab are well underway. Many research papers by our team of 18 scientists were published and Director of Research, Dr. Joe Mcauliffe, took an extended sabbatical leave to study the desert ecology of southern Africa. • Amenities for Garden members and visitors also took a big step forward in 2012, with the completion of an expanded parking area and the construction of our new restaurant, Gertrude’s. After opening in early 2013, the restaurant has been bustling with activity ever since!
These are but a few of the highlights of 2012, which also saw strong attendance and healthy income streams from operations. The Garden’s financial position at the end of 2012 is described in detail in the following letter from our Treasurer. The Garden’s five-year Strategic Plan for the period 2012- 2017 has been published and is named The Saguaro Initiative. financial report Fiscal 2012 Financial Highlights October 1, 2011 through September 30, 2012
As we see the regional and national economies making improvements, the Garden is seeing increases in its overall fiscal position. Revenues are up and the market value of our investments grew significantly. The financial statements on the following pages indicate for the year ending on September 30, 2012, that the Garden continued to show a healthy financial position. Total revenues were $13,036,870. Net income from all sources, less all operating expenses, was $2,266,916. This amount includes unrealized gains in the endowment, revenue from restricted grants for future projects, but excludes depreciation expense. Net income from operations alone, excluding the factors above and other non-operational expenditures, was slightly positive at $40,260 for the year. The following changes from 2011 to 2012 should be noted by members: • Gross profit on retail and beverage sales was down by 9.5 % caused by the retail shop being closed for renovation in the summer months. • Admission revenues were up 13.8% attributable to an increase in the admissions price. • Contributions, Grants and Special Events revenues were up 51% as a result of the receipt of several large restricted gifts. • Net unrealized gain (loss) on investments was up 240% because of very positive changes in the capital markets.

• Membership revenues were up 10% thanks to an increase in the total number of households purchasing Garden memberships. • Total expenses increased by 9% primarily to support additional staff members and inflation-related cost increases. • Total debt for the Garden (line of credit, notes payable and bond debt) increased by 16% from $1,850,000 to $2,150,000, reflecting costs associated with constructing the Garden’s new restaurant. All indications are that the Garden will continue to perform well during the new fiscal year.

The Statement of Activities above reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike industrial firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2012 and 2011 was $1,188,000 and $1,268,000 respectively..

Gertrude Divine Webster At the dedication of the Garden in 1939, as President of the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society, Mrs. Webster said: “I can foresee the time when Arizona will have intense pride in this promising development and when hundreds and even thousands will walk through the blooming gardens. We are building this for the state and for future generations. You and I may not be here to see these gardens mature-but perhaps we can look down from heaven and enjoy them just the same.”

Nancy and Robert Rheinlander Nancy was a 26 year Hardy Perennial Volunteer in the Garden. She was a docent, Sage School Guide and through involvement with the 1992 National Science Foundation grant, she contributed to creating the Garden’s educational exhibits that were completed in 1997. The Rheinlanders were among the first to respond to “60 x 60,” a campaign designed to secure 60 planned gift commitments by the Garden’s 60th birthday in 1999.
