Dear Friends, Desert Botanical Garden is fortunate to have a tremendous base of enthusiastic and generous supporters who invest their time, talent and funds in our mission. Thanks to you, great things happened at the Garden and throughout our community in 2017! The Garden’s annual operations enjoyed a healthy year and I’m pleased to share some memorable highlights with you on the following pages. I am proud of the leadership and contributions so many individuals made from 2012 to 2017 to The Saguaro Initiative (TSI). Because of you, we met and exceeded the Garden’s $18 million goal, the new Butterfly Exhibit is bringing joy to hundreds of families and the Garden’s collection of plants are happier than ever before in their new, state–ofthe-art home. Thanks to your support, we are working together with an array of scientists, land managers, educators and conservation-based organizations to protect and promote our treasured open spaces and desert mountain preserves. Garden scientists are also working globally as we partner with International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to assess the conservation status of the agave family. Now that TSI has successfully concluded, the Garden is once again imagining what is possible for the next five years, from 2019 to 2023. We have chosen sustainability and the concept of a “triple bottom line” guided by economic sustainability, environmental sustainability and social sustainability to frame our inclusive strategic planning process that is currently underway. Board, staff, volunteers and community experts are hard at work to identify our fiveyear goals to advance the Garden further into the future. I extend my warmest thanks to you–members, donors, volunteers and community friends. Your encouragement and participation continues the Garden’s role as a compelling community attraction that brings to life the many wonders of the desert. With appreciation,

Ken Schutz The Dr. William Huizingh Executive Director P.S. We are very excited about next season’s major exhibition, Electric Desert, and I hope you will bring your friends and family to enjoy this innovative and immersive experience.

D Í A D E L O S M U E R T O S F E S T I VA L With more than 10 signature events and festivals each year, the Garden brings our community together to celebrate culture and explore the wonders of the desert. These occasions also give us a chance to show our gratitude and give back. The Garden’s Día de los Muertos festival marked 15 years in 2017, with more than 150 artists coming from 10 cities, two states and two countries. The two-day festival is one of the many ways the Garden embraces Latino culture. Music, dance and storytelling brought families together, and the Mercado featured handmade art, jewelry and crafts. Each day culminated with La Procesión, a procession through the Garden by performers and audience members, concluding with a traditional burning of troubles.

EVENTS

D O G S ’ D AY I N T H E G A R D E N The Garden is thrilled to have the opportunity to support another nonprofit–Arizona Humane Society–through two Dogs’ Day events each year. Admission for each four-legged visitor is donated to the Arizona Humane Society.

O F R E N DA EXHIBIT Each year as part of the DĂa de los Muertos festival, the Garden has engaged talented local artists to create original work for the annual Ofrenda exhibit. More than 12 artists came together in 2017 to honor departed loved ones with flowers, photographs, candles, decorations, food and drink. This act helps transform grief into acceptance.

The Garden “ is a valued ally. This collaboration has helped us grow yearly, creating new artistic pieces and reaching a much larger demographic. While offering beautiful facilities, the best part is working with the very skilled staff to present the best we have to offer.

S PAC E S O F O P P O R T U N I T Y Residents of south Phoenix now have affordable access to fresh, healthy produce thanks to an initiative called Spaces of Opportunity (Spaces). Together, Tiger Mountain Foundation, The Orchard Community Learning Center, Unlimited Potential, Roosevelt Elementary School District and the Garden are helping to convert a vacant lot in south Phoenix into a thriving community farm and garden. In 2017, Spaces celebrated many accomplishments, including a fruitful inaugural fundraiser, Fund the Farm, which allowed the project to purchase a much needed tractor. Spaces of Opportunity is supported by: ArtPlace America, Blue Cross® Blue Shield® of Arizona, Cigna, HBI USA, Newman’s Own Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts: Our Town, Sprouts Healthy Communities Foundation, Starbucks, The Steele Foundation, USDA Local Food Promotion Program and Vitalyst Health Foundation.

COMMUNITY I N I T I AT I V E S

ON-SITE COMMUNITY GARDEN The Community Garden demonstrates best practices for vegetable gardening in a desert environment, promotes educational opportunities and enhances the Garden’s sense of community. The Community Garden is located on 1/5 acre in the northeast corner of Desert Botanical Garden property. It is home to more than 35 raised beds and a dozen fruit trees producing organically grown vegetables, herbs and flowers throughout the year. The garden is maintained by a workforce of 20-30 volunteer gardeners in a cooperative fashion, sharing produce with St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church food bank. In 2016 co-op volunteer gardeners harvested 2,000 pounds of organic produce.

C O N S E R VA T I O N C E L E B R A T I O N Desert Botanical Garden’s history, both past and present, contains amazing examples of committed volunteers and visionary donors who make a difference. In 2017, dedicated individuals stepped forward to chair first-time fundraising events for the Garden. Their leadership facilitated support from the community to help advance and sustain new program outreach initiatives launched during the TSI campaign. Long-time supporter Anne Stupp approached Executive Director Ken Schutz several years ago with the idea of promoting the Garden’s conservation work. Rapid growth of a Garden-led alliance prompted the need for more diverse funding sources to sustain CAZCA into the future. Thanks to Anne’s talents and commitment—as well as participation from many Garden leaders, friends and Alliance partners—the first Conservation Celebration generated $32,000 to protect, restore and promote desert open spaces in Central Arizona.

Conservation is a pillar of the Garden and “ has been from the very beginning. Indeed it

is our mountain parks and Sonoran Desert landscape that make our home unique from any other place in the world. Anne, thank you for establishing a wonderful new tradition that brings people together to honor our shared commitment to conservation. Martha Hunter, Trustee Emerita

If I didn’t believe in the Garden, I would not have spent two-thirds of my life working here. To know that the collections I make for the Garden will be around for many years, when they provide information unknown to us today, is not only exciting, but reassuring.

In 2017, the Garden had 732 active volunteers who were an integral part of our team, providing more than 68,432 hours of service to the Garden. Their skills, talents and dedication benefit all areas of our mission. In addition, 583 of these individuals made financial contributions totaling $573,728. Volunteers have made our institution one of the premier botanical gardens in the world. The Garden expresses thanks to all employees for their gift of time, talent and treasures. In 2017, 104 full-time staff generously donated $80,031 to advance the mission.

THE FUTURE LO O K S BRIGHT M Y R N A H . B E R G E R C H I L D R E N A N D FA M I LY G A R D E N

The Myrna H. Berger Children and Family Garden Master Plan was supported by a grant from the Arizona Community Foundation.

At the 2017 Annual Meeting, the Garden unveiled the Master Plan for the future Myrna H. Berger Children and Family Garden. The three-acre space, to be located near the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail, will be a place for social play, creativity, discovery and hands-on experiences in a desert landscape. This future garden is designed to ignite and inspire lifelong learning about nature and the desert. It is possible through a significant planned gift made in her memory by Myrna H. Berger’s husband. Myrna found beauty and peace at Desert Botanical Garden. She enjoyed seeing children explore and discover our trails, reflecting her own sense of joy and wonder about nature. Mr. Berger’s gift demonstrates the power of DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN ANNUAL REPORT 2017 philanthropy and planned giving.

FINANCIAL REPORT We are pleased to share with members, donors and friends the Garden’s financial statements for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2017. The Consolidated Statement of Activities shows total revenues for the year exceeded total expenditures by nearly $4.8 million. A number of factors drove this excellent result. Healthy admission, membership and contribution levels were achieved in a year without a major exhibit, indicating a positive trend of strengthening relationships with the community. More than $3 million of the TSI campaign total was recognized in fiscal year 2017. The Garden’s expenditures continue to be managed with careful stewardship in mind while at the same time seizing opportunities for growth and greater mission impact. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Position shows the Garden’s fiscal position remains solid. Unrestricted cash and Board-designated cash are sufficient for normal operations without use of external credit, and provides funds for repair and maintenance of major building systems as facilities age. The Garden Foundation manages endowment assets conservatively with an annual target of a 4.5 percent distribution from the Foundation to the Garden’s operating budget. The Garden’s total debt of $610,000 represents just 1.3 percent of the total combined assets of the Garden and Foundation. The Garden’s financial health and success in achieving its mission would not be possible without your commitment, dedication and generosity. On behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers, we extend our gratitude for all that you do for the Garden.

Desert Botanical Garden is committed to full transparency in financial stewardship. Our complete audited financial statements are posted on the website. There you will find annual filings with the IRS. Please visit dbg.org to review these documents. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of longlived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2017 was $1,468,000.

Auditor’s Opinion Desert Botanical Garden has received an unmodified opinion from its auditors, Schmidt Westergard & Company, PLLC, on the audit of its financial statements for the year ended September 30, 2017.
