The Garden is here to help you enjoy the beauty of the desert...and care about it. From its founding in 1939 to the present day, Desert Botanical Garden’s living collections have fostered scientific research and growth of knowledge about the plant world. Its first director, George Lindsay, recognized that accurate information about where and when plants were collected was essential for scientific work, and established that culture at the outset. Because of his foresight and efforts, we know exactly where the original 1939 collections (many still living) came from, when they were collected, and who collected them. Since then, this has become one of the world’s most important scientifically documented living collections of desert plants.

Desert Botanical Garden ANNUAL REPORT 2015

3

The four pillars of the Garden’s mission—education, research, exhibition and conservation—ultimately rest on a foundation supported by a culture of thoughtful acquisition of new plant material and their attendant information. A comprehensive, detailed record of its living collections contributed to the Garden’s accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, making it one of only a few accredited botanical gardens in the United States. In addition, the American Public Garden Association’s Plant Collection Network has designated the Garden’s collections of cacti and agaves as the National Collections of those two families; this designation reflects the breadth of those collections and of the historical information associated with them. The Garden’s founders established strong values that are grounded by commitments to respect and understand the unique Sonoran Desert and to help others appreciate and protect it.

Everything the Garden does— from maintaining the plant displays, to scientific explorations in remote locations, to school tours, classes, temporary art exhibitions, and weekend events—reflects this passion for connecting our community with the beauty and wonder of desert plants.

Thank you!

The Garden created this report especially for you, our generous donors and valued members. We hope you enjoy reading about recent activities that reflect our shared culture and values.

research Thanks to generous donors, committed trustees, and talented scientists, the Garden has emerged as an international leader in the study of desert plants. From a full-time staff of four in 1989, the current Research, Conservation, and Collections department has grown to eighteen staff members, including six with doctoral-level training and five with master’s degrees. Here are just a few of the many research efforts that are focused on the unusual plant world of the Sonoran Desert and the conservation challenges we face.

Plant Discoveries

Senior Research Botanist Wendy Hodgson has described nine new species of plants during her 42 years with the Garden, including six new species of agaves. You can view some of Hodgson’s discoveries, along with those of other plant collectors, in the new Botanist Garden display in the Sam & Betty Kitchell Family Heritage Garden.

Effects of Temperature on Cacti

Plant Physiologist Dr. Kevin Hultine is studying how various species of cacti respond to temperature. His research will help predict some of the consequences of future temperature increases in the region.

Molecular Genetics

Dr. Shannon Fehlberg’s study of molecular genetics of the Arizona hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus arizonicus) provides essential information that will be needed to develop strategies to protect this endangered species.

Living Collection Documentation

The documented, living collections we maintain are used by scientists around the world. Within the last year, botanists from England, Australia, South Africa, and Mexico, and from many institutions in the United States, have visited the Garden in collaborative efforts, using its living collections as a resource for making new scientific discoveries.

Research Fellowship

In 2015, Desert Botanical Garden and Arizona State University School of Life Sciences made the first award of the Huizingh Desert Research Fellowship to support a doctoral student co-advised by Garden and university scientists. The fellowship will provide five years of funding to the recipient, Davis Blasini, including three full years as a research assistant and two years as a teaching assistant. The fellowship was established in 2011 to honor Dr. William Huizingh, who passed

away in March 2016. He was a long-time supporter and former president of the board of trustees. This fellowship marks the Garden’s commitment to training the next generation of leaders in the plant sciences.

Herbarium Collections

The herbarium houses a collection of pressed plant specimens, all with specific origination data. In a world of changing climates and other environmental impacts, herbarium specimens are increasingly used to document shifts in the distributions of plant species. The collections are especially noteworthy because of the number and unparalleled quality of specimens of cacti, agaves, and other succulents. With a 2015 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant, we installed a larger, more efficiently arranged, movable shelving system on tracks, which expanded the specimen storage capacity by 70%. With the expansion completed, the 80,000th specimen was added in February 2016: a species of prickly pear (Opuntia phaeacantha) collected in Arizona by Wendy Hodgson.

Thank you for investing in research!

conservation Without support from members and friends, the Garden would not have the staff resources needed to advance conservation. Here is a sample of recent activities you made possible.

Plant Care

Before the Heritage Garden construction began in 2015, staff from the Research, Conservation and Collections department worked with the Exhibits team to map every one of the 1,400 plants encompassed within the renovation footprint. They assisted in salvaging plants before construction began and in protecting the more than 1,000 that remained in place throughout construction.

Plant Rescue

Early plant rescue expeditions included the 1940 salvage of organ pipe cacti (Stenocereus thurberi) from an area of mining operations near Ajo, Arizona. These same plants flourish today along the Sonoran Desert Nature Trail as an early example of cactus conservation efforts.

Conservation Planning

In 2015, we entered into an exciting partnership with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the oldest and largest global environmental organization. The Garden will serve as Host Institute for IUCN’s Cactus and Succulent Specialist Group (CSSG), which promotes the long-term Photos: 1. Salvaging cactus prior to Heritage Garden construction 2. conservation of cacti and succulents and their environments worldwide, and where feasible, the recovery or restoration of cacti and succulent populations and the environments that contain them. A major focus for the CSSG will be conservation planning for the cactus family, recently identified by IUCN as the fifth most threatened group of organisms in the world.

Conserving Orchids

North America is home to more than 200 orchid species, more than two dozen of which can be found in the state of Arizona. Although people don’t generally associate orchids with the Southwest, they are indeed here! This is why the Garden chose to become a partner in the North American Orchid Conservation Center (NAOCC), a coalition of organizations brought together by Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and United States Botanic Garden to work toward conserving the North American orchid. In 2015, Garden staff provided valuable materials to the NAOCC’s orchid identification website, including data and images of Southwestern orchids. We also began a project, in collaboration with partners at ASU, to survey for and monitor the Canelo Hills ladies’ tresses (Spiranthes Spiranthes delitescens delitescens), an endangered orchid known only from the state of Arizona. Learn about NAOCC online at www. northamericanorchidcenter.org. View additional photographs of Arizona orchids online at www.goorchids.northamericanorchidcenter.org.

promoting education and volunteerism With generous support from you and donors like the Herbert H. and Barbara C. Dow Foundation, the Garden offers nature-based, science literacy learning opportunities for children through the Sonoran Desert Adventure (SDA) and Teens in the Garden (TIG) programs.

Expanding Student Learning through Sonoran Desert Adventures

The Sonoran Desert Adventure program offers field trips for students in grades Pre-K through 8. Each school year, we serve approximately 20,000 students, teachers, and chaperones through experiences specifically designed to complement a school district's educational objectives and correlate with Arizona Academic Standards and Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards (Common Core). Participants engage through interactive, hands-on, inquiry-based investigations to stimulate interest in scientific concepts and nurture a stewardship of the desert while encouraging a natural curiosity about the world.

Thank you for supporting education and volunteerism!

Connecting Teens with Citizen-Science Projects Teens in the Garden (TIG) strives to bridge the gap between classroom academics and practical application by connecting teens with citizen-science projects and career opportunities in the biological sciences and conservation. Teens aged 13-18, from diverse backgrounds across the Phoenix metro area, apply to the program each year. TIG participants show an interest in the natural sciences and a commitment to hands-on service learning. The Garden cultivates and develops those interests by giving them skills and experiences needed for college and beyond.

Volunteers Leave Their Legacy

The greatest gift we have to give is our time—precious to each of us and so valuable. Each year, hundreds of dedicated volunteers give thousands of hours to Desert Botanical Garden in support of every department and every pillar of its mission. Our work would simply not get done without volunteers. In 2015, the Garden sadly had six dedicated volunteers pass away, each leaving behind a wonderful legacy. One of those volunteers, docent Helen Wooden, came every Saturday. She said she always felt better when she was in the Garden. Our visitors always felt better after meeting Helen: her love of the desert was contagious! Thanks to her generosity and her family, a beautiful new bench honors Helen’s memory in the Sam & Betty Kitchell Family Heritage Garden. The spirit of our volunteers stays forever, whether in a bench or a blooming flower or the smile on the face of a child. This passion can be felt by all who enjoy the beauty of Desert Botanical Garden.

compelling exhibitions

With support from thousands of members and visitors throughout 2015, the Garden continued its tradition of exploring the intersection of art and nature.

Bruce Munro: Sonoran Light

November 22, 2015 – May 8, 2016 | Desert Botanical Garden When British light artist Bruce Munro opened his first show in North America at Longwood Gardens in the summer of 2012, a star was born. Exhibit planners from Gardens around the nation, including our own, flocked to Pennsylvania to see Munro's work in person. Soon after our initial contact with Munro, he flew to Phoenix and fell in love with the Garden, its plant life and the landscape in Papago Park. It was not long before we booked the Bruce Munro: Sonoran Light at Desert Botanical Garden exhibit which, when it opened, featured the biggest Field of Light installation that Munro had ever created. The attendance for the Munro exhibition has been outstanding and second only to the visitor traffic generated by the Chihuly in the Garden exhibition.

Arizona Indigenous: New Turned Wood by Philip & Matt Moulthrop

February 6 – May 3, 2015 | Ottosen Gallery Arizona Indigenous presented new works by world-renowned artists Philip and Matt Moulthrop, whose family legacy of woodturning has carried on for three generations. The Moulthrops created this collection especially for Desert Botanical Garden, using wood native to Arizona. The exhibition was made possible through the generous support of the late Hazel Hare.

Beyond Blue: Cyanotypes of Laszlo Layton

October 16, 2015 – January 10, 2016 | Ottosen Gallery Beyond Blue showcased portraits of nature by celebrated artist and Garden staff member Laszlo Layton. The exhibition featured cyanotype photographs of fascinating animals and objects from around the world. Each captivating subject was photographed using a large format camera, printed with a unique chemical solution, and meticulously hand-painted by the artist.

Butterfly Exhibition

In March 2015, we closed the Maxine and Jonathan Marshall Butterfly Pavilion in anticipation of the new butterfly exhibit opening in spring 2017 near the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail. The new, expanded exhibit will feature a caterpillar nursery and chrysalis emergence chamber. While the exhibit is closed, there are many alternative activities for visitors who love butterflies, including Butterfly Walks, Meet the Caterpillars talks, and Butterfly Gardens in a Box offered at Garden Plant Sales.

5

Interpretive Master Plan

The Interpretive Master Plan assessment began in October 2013, and was supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. The two-year process included a comprehensive analysis of current interpretive programs and exhibits, and collected more than 1,000 visitor surveys. The completed report was published in October 2015, and outlines themes and guiding principles for visitor and missioncentered interpretation at the Garden.

Thank you for attending and encouraging compelling exhibitions!

Sam & Betty Kitchell Family Heritage Garden

Made possible by a generous donation from the Sam and Betty Kitchell family, the Heritage Garden, home to many of the oldest plantings, is a dramatic reminder of the vision and legacy of our founders. The renovation of this historic section in 2015, interprets the Garden’s story and vision for the future, featuring horticultural displays that we hope will be as treasured in 75 years as the giant cardones are today. A major feature of the Heritage Garden is the Fine Family Contemplation Garden, made possible by a generous donation from the Fine family. This space provides a quiet refuge where guests may pause for reflection. Surrounded by columnar cacti, the space includes a labyrinth and reflective water feature to inspire meditation. Other highlights of the new exhibit include dramatic gates signaling entry into a special space and the Founders Wall, a sculptural element comprised of glass circles etched with 10 original plant species and the names of those who have made significant contributions to the Garden’s history and success.

Central Arizona Conservation Alliance

The Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA) grew from a germ of an idea during strategic planning in 2010 to the reality of a strong alliance with nearly 50 partners and collaborators by the end of 2015. CAZCA is fully aligned with the Garden’s local-to-global conservation strategy. The focus of CAZCA is the system of Sonoran Desert mountain preserves within the Phoenix urban core and throughout Maricopa County. CAZCA envisions a sustainable preserve system that supports healthy ecosystems while providing beautiful, safe, open spaces for recreation, education, and relaxation. The first three years of the Conservation Alliance were generously supported by a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. You can learn about CAZCA and how to get involved at www.mymountainparks.org.

Community Gardening Initiative: Spaces of Opportunity

The Garden formalized a partnership in 2015 with St. Luke’s Health Initiative, the Roosevelt School District, and Cultivate South Phoenix (CUSP) to launch the Spaces of Opportunity initiative. The Garden supported CUSP in securing a five-year lease with the Roosevelt School District, as well as grant support from St. Luke’s Health Initiatives, Starbucks, and the USDA Local Foods Promotion Program. Development of a business plan, master site plan by the project’s lead designer Quilian Riano of DSGN AGNC (Design Agency), and a website at www.cultivatephx.com are all underway.

2

Community work days are held on the land every second Saturday of the month, when approximately 75 volunteers turn out to help. Thanks to their efforts, roughly eight acres of cover crops and five acres of community garden plots now provide a stark contrast to the dusty field full of weeds and trash that existed there one year ago. People in the surrounding neighborhoods are ecstatic to see the transformation into a productive space that benefits the entire south Phoenix community. Everyone involved in the project is confident that 2016 will be a big year for Spaces of Opportunity.

financial report We are pleased to share with Garden members, donors, and friends the financial statements for fiscal year 2015. The following Statement of Financial Activities shows that total revenues for the year exceeded total expenses by more than $400,000, which is reason to celebrate. Readers will notice that this year's surplus is far less than the previous year's surplus of more than $6 million. There are three reasons for this difference between the two years: 1) Fiscal year 2014 was the year we hosted the Chihuly exhibit, resulting in admission revenues that were more than double the average. In fiscal year 2015, admission revenues returned to normal levels. 2) Several non-recurring leadership gifts to The Saguaro Initiative were recorded in fiscal year 2014 and, as expected, these gifts were not repeated in 2015. 3) Unrealized losses in the Garden's investments were recorded in fiscal year 2015, whereas in fiscal year 2014 there were slight unrealized gains in the Garden's investments. There was a net decrease in Total Assets of approximately $1.2 million, which is attributable to the unrealized loss on investments recorded as of September 30, 2015. Otherwise, the following minor shifts in the composition of the Statement of Financial Position should be noted: 1) Current Assets show that cash was drawn down by approximately $1.9 million. These funds were used to pay a deposit on the Bruce Munro exhibit and to build new facilities such as the Heritage Garden. 2) Noncurrent Assets show a significant reduction in pledges receivable and a modest buildup of cash, investments, and property and equipment. 3) Total Current Liabilities decreased by 8%. 4) All other liabilities, in aggregate, remained unchanged. As noted, the surplus recorded for fiscal year 2015 represents a strong performance for Desert Botanical Garden. We remain committed to continuing the conservative financial management practices that have made the Garden resilient in good economic climates, as well as more challenging times.

The Statement of Activities above reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2015 and 2014 was $1,286,000 and $1,183,000 respectively.

The Founders’ Wall celebrates cornerstones of Desert Botanical Garden’s history. Recognized alongside its founders are plant collectors, former directors, and trustee emeriti. Each honoree is a champion of the vision of desert plant conservation and some contributed accessioned plants to the Garden's early collection. The Founders’ Wall will continue to grow, as the Garden does, with visionary leaders and notable plants contributing to the success of the next 75 years. Within this section, we have highlighted a few of those plants and people honored on the Founders Wall, located in the Cardon Plaza.
