Everyone is welcome, including first-time birders. Wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable shoes, and bring binoculars if available. Ask a Gardener Saturdays and Sundays, October – November | 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Drop by our Ask a Gardener station on the Center for Desert Living Trail where knowledgeable volunteers can help with your gardening questions. Learn how you can help conserve these migrating marvels. Monarch Butterfly Walks Saturdays, October 3 – November 14 | 9 a.m. Included with membership or paid Garden admission. Go on a butterfly walk with a naturalist, and learn about creating your own Monarch Waystation. See native milkweed species, hunt for monarch caterpillars, and tag monarch butterflies. Limit 25. Meet in the Ottosen Entry Garden. No registration required. First come, first served. Monarch Magic Family Class Saturday, October 31 | 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Every autumn, monarch butterflies are welcomed to their overwintering sites in Mexico as incarnations of the souls of the dearly departed. Join butterfly expert Kim Pegram to learn the scientific story behind the seemingly magical migration. We will uncover their natural history, look for monarchs and other butterflies throughout the Garden, and discover why the conservation of these special insects is so important to so many people. Members: $12 per person General Public: $16 per person Registration required The Marshall Butterfly Pavilion has closed at its current location, and a new and expanded butterfly exhibit will open near the Harriet K. Fall is the perfect time to add new plants to your yard and garden. The sale is a one-stop shopping experience featuring the largest variety of arid-adapted plants available in one location. With more than 30,000 plants on-site, including cactus, succulents, trees, shrubs, groundcover, perennials, herbs/veggies and various oddities, this sale is the best way to start your gardening season. There will be many new plant introductions and unusual plants of all sizes, with an emphasis on plants for a butterfly garden. Specimen-sized plants and delivery services will be available. Garden volunteers and staff horticulturists will be on hand to answer questions, assist in plant selections and offer advice. Day of the Dead at the Garden Ofrenda Exhibition October 23 – November 1 | 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Webster Auditorium Ofrenda, or Offering, is part of the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos. A special spot in the home is customarily selected to put photographs, flowers, decorations, lit candles and favorite food and drink of those who have passed away. This act of preparing an altar of offerings to the dead helps transform grief into acceptance. View original Ofrenda installations that have been created specifically for this exhibition by local Arizona artists. Cuisine and Culture Thursday, October 29 | 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Boppart Courtyard Members: $55 | General Public: $69 Join us for a deliciously interactive evening as we unveil the secrets and cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos. This event features Zarco Guerrero, acclaimed multimedia artist and community art advocate, discussing the history and customs of the holiday. Guests can enjoy a traditional meal from Rosita’s Place, which reviewers have called the most authentic Mexican food in Phoenix. A folkloric dance presentation will conclude the event in grand style. Enjoy delicious food and browse the Mercado filled with art, jewelry and other wares. Finish the day by participating in La Procesión. Based on an ancient tradition, guests and performers will march as a community to honor the departed. The procession concludes with performances and a traditional burning of penas (sorrows). The Great Pumpkin Festival Friday, October 23 | 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, October 24 & 25 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. Located in the Garden’s Events Plaza, Pumpkin Patch and adjoining Community Garden Celebrate a fall tradition and carve new memories with Desert Botanical Garden at the Great Pumpkin Festival. Take a hayride out to the Garden’s Pumpkin Patch, where children 12 and under can find their perfect pumpkin! Get lost in the amazing hay bale maze, meet farm animals in the petting zoo, decorate a pumpkin and dance to boot-scootin’ country western entertainment. In the Community Garden, see how pumpkins grow and listen to great pumpkin tales. Back at the Events Plaza, test your skills on carnival games, enjoy live music, and purchase pony rides and food concessions. Activities and hayride are included with paid Garden admission.
