When Does the Desert Bloom?

Display Gardens & Regional Parks:

Most annual wildflowers, like poppies and lupines, bloom from late February to April. For dazzling displays (which are rare), fall and winter rains must be adequate.

Phoenix area: Adobe Dam Recreation Area (Cave Creek) Desert Botanical Garden (Phoenix) Estrella Mountain Regional Park (Goodyear) Lost Dutchman State Park (Apache Junction) McDowell Mountain Regional Park (Fountain Hills) Phoenix Mountain Preserves Usery Mountain Regional Park (Mesa) White Tank Mountain Regional Park (Glendale)

Other annual wildflowers are summer bloomers. They bloom from late July to October, if summer rains are sufficient. Perennial plants, like cacti, shrubs, and trees, bloom from late February to November. Unlike annual wildflowers, perennial plants are not as dependent on the timing of rainfall to bloom.
