Kitchen Kitchen Jan and Gary Boydstun in their store “Kitchen Kitchen” in The Village at Indian Wells.
W
hen Kitchen Kitchen celebrated their 36th anniversary last November, owner Jan Boydstun(Th e Gadget Gal) refl ected on the history of the business that was started by her parents, Phil and Charlotte Carter in 1979. “Little did I know when they asked me to help out for just four months, how my life would change!” Now 27 years later, with husband Gary and their three sons helping out, the meaning of a family business has never been more true! Jan has built on the success of her parents, and it is Jan’s smile, infectious laugh and warm personality that has created the family legacy. In 2009, this legacy was perceptibly integrated into the store with the addition of the kitchen in the new location. Th is is where the famous mural painted in 1989 honoring Jan’s parents is mounted on the wall. “We built this kitchen as a tribute to Mom and Dad which is why it has added so much warmth to the store. We have cooking classes here and host private events where the customer customdesigns their menu from appetizer to dessert!” Th ey also have free cooking demos offering food samples and helpful hints on Free Fun Fridays from 11:00am-1:00pm. Th ere is always something fun going on!
Walking into Kitchen Kitchen is like entering a treasure trove! Th ey have an entire wall of gadgets, including the square egg press, the Mystic Maid cleaning cloth(their number one seller!) and those unique, hard to fi nd items for “Th e Chef in You!” Th ey also carry gourmet coff ee and specialty foods including an array of salts, sauces and salsas. You will fi nd upscale serving pieces from Nambe, Le Crueset and Scan Pan cookware from Denmark making this your number one choice for all your special occasions and everyday cooking needs. Jan has done over 500 gadget demos all over the valley and the world at various schools, charities and private clubs, along with teaching marketing strategies at industry trade shows. She is in the second season of filming “What’s Cooking with Jan Boydstun” that airs every Saturday night at 7:00 pm on KMIR. A fun-filled show that features local chefs, restaurants, celebrities and more! With all of this going on, you can see why Kitchen Kitchen has been rated “Best of the Valley” serving all of you…”The Best Customers of the Valley!”

East Coast Deli with West Coast Style Sherman’s Deli and Bakery is a true culinary landmark in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this Kosher-style family restaurant has been the “meeting place” for locals, vacationers and celebrities for over a half a century. Sherman Harris came to the desert in 1953 to visit a friend at Lawry’s Steak Ranch. He fell in love with the area, stayed on to manage the ranch and realized his true calling when he opened Sherman’s Deli and Bakery. A true family restaurant, it is now run by his son Sam and daughter Janet. Sherman may not be with us anymore, but his presence is felt every day in every way. Sam and Janet remember bussing tables and waiting on tables and listening to their father’s frequent reminders to “treat every one who came through the doors as though they were a guest in your home”. He loved his customers and his community and they loved him back. Sherman’s loyalty and dedication to customer service is as evident today as it was then, carried out by Sam and Janet in the same caring manner as always.

STEPHEN BAUMBACH LANDSCAPE AND PORTRAITURE PHOTOGRAPHER
67
Bl.
For over 40 years, Stephen Baumbach has pursued the thing that has captivated him since High School…the art of photography. He has taught in classrooms, workshops and been exhibited in numerous shows nationwide. His images range in scope from rodeos to national and international architectural icons. Now settled in Palm Springs, CA since October 2014, his eye is on the surrounding desert…the o˜ -the-grid and outlier areas…that yield an extraordinary beauty he captures with his artists’ eye and his trusty Canon. All his photographs are produced digitally and he personally ÿ nishes each print himself. His love of the desert has him exploring the surrounding areas including the Anza Borrego, Algodones Dunes and Slab City
ART GALLERIES among others. He plans his sojourns through the use of satellite and weather maps, looking for the areas that will yield the treasures and hues he is aiming for…the browns, reds, blues, pinks and yellows, which reveal themselves at di˜ erent times of day or night. He refers to some of the images he shoots as the “Eighth Wonders of the World” and there are many who would agree with him. Stephen’s work is broken up into series, which currently include the Anza Borrego desert and Kemuri, which is a study in smoke. His works may be views at www.stephenbaumbach photography.com.
