WITH AN INTERIOR DESIGNER Reality TV shows, such as Trading Spaces, While You Were Out, and Eye on Design, have brought decorating and interior design to the forefront of mainstream America. Whether you want to redo a room or an entire house, an interior designer can help you define your space and attain your decorating vision. Interior designers know the ins and outs of decorating, including more than just coordinating paint and wallpaper. They can advise you about lighting choices, carpet, hard surface flooring, furniture, window treatments and much more. Before contacting a designer, it is important to define the function of each room or space in your home. Do you need a haven for relaxation, an inviting room that welcomes family and friends, or an energizing area that can help you keep on track for work? An interior designer is specially trained to help you balance your dream, functional needs and budget. This professional will facilitate the design project by listening to your ideas, provide expert feedback, and then create a plan to accomplish your objective while managing resources and trades people to achieve your vision. Working with a designer can save you time and money by allocating resources wisely and eliminating decorating mistakes. They can advise on current fashion trends to achieve functional and aesthetically appealing new looks by blending furniture, fabrics, finishes, window treatments, rugs and even interior lighting. COMMUNICATION IS KEY Make sure your designer understands your vision for the design project. The more information you can communicate to your designer, the better. Collect paint and fabric color swatches, and magazine pictures of rooms, furniture and color schemes you like to illustrate your ideas. These samples will give your designer a springboard for creating a custom design. If you don’t agree with the designer’s approach, speak up! Once you feel comfortable and everyone agrees on the design plan, move ahead. With your approval, an interior designer will put the wheels in motion to transform your room or home, while working within a budget and on a set schedule. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AN INTERIOR DESIGNER Whether you consult with a designer by the hour or the day, for a room or the entire house – this professional’s expertise is worth its weight in gold and should include: • An in-home consultation and walk-through of the project room • The ability to make the right product selections for your project • Creative ideas and solutions for your project • Coordination of color and design scheme by showing you fabric and paint samples, and suggesting window treatments and surface solutions such as flooring and countertops • Suggestions on how to improve a room’s function by applying design principles of color, texture, balance, lighting, etc. • The attitude that your home should reflect the style and personalities of the family living there

SUMMIT (ECHO CANYON) TRAIL CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN McDonald Drive east of Tatum Blvd. in the Echo Canyon Recreation Area | Paradise Valley This is the more popular of the two trails on Camelback. A rigorous climb of 1264’ will bring you to the mountain’s 2704’ summit. Spectacular views of the entire Valley and the potential for some of the best sunsets you’ll ever see make this hike one of the most popular in Phoenix. Difficulty: moderate to difficult

CHOLLA TRAIL CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN McDonald Drive east of Tatum Blvd. in the Echo Canyon Recreation Area | Paradise Valley Another less populated trail, the Cholla trail is also slightly easier. Although it’s a longer way up, you’ll encounter open views along the trail and probably less hikers. While the Summit Trail runs up the western side of the mountain, the Cholla Trail scales the gentler eastern ridge. If you’re a Camelback Mountain veteran, try a different way up for a change. Difficulty: moderate to difficult PINNACLE PEAK TRAIL 102nd Way & Alma School Scottsdale One of the newest trails in the Valley, this hike proves to be enjoyable all around. The trail begins at the eastern foot of Pinnacle Peak and switchbacks its way up the side of the hill. It’s not a loop trail, but rather an out-and-back. The trail runs 1.75 miles one-way and reaches its highest level at 2889’. It’s a

climb of 320’ or so. Beautiful Scottsdale vistas await, and the giant boulders and plentiful desert plant life make this a hike to bring out-of-town visitors to. Difficulty: easy NATIONAL TRAIL SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK Baseline Road west of 48th Street Phoenix South Mountain Park is made up of three mountain ranges and expands over 16,000 acres! There is a large network of trails within the park to choose from. One of the more popular trails, the National Trail, runs 14.8 miles in length and ends at the westernmost tip of the park. This trail has some rocky and steep sections but is overall more for endurance hikers than for vertical hikers. Difficulty: moderate to difficult

CAVE CREEK TRAIL Seven Springs Recreation Area Cave Creek There are many trails that make up the area, so be sure to refer to the wooden map sign at the trailhead before you start. A particularly nice loop to take is 8.9 miles in length and is the epitome of gorgeous desert hiking. From the Cave Creek Trailhead (Tr. #4), you’ll hike about 4 miles and meet up with the Skunk Creek Trail (Tr. #246). Take that trail until it loops back to Tr. #4 again and back to the trailhead. Expect to see the gurgling creek, a rare crested saguaro, and plenty of wildlife. Difficulty: moderate
