Which Yoga Is Best for You?
Ashtanga, Kripalu, even Rock ‘n’ Roll – there are so many forms of yoga to choose from. Which one is right for you? Nearly all yoga styles are rooted in the basic form of Hatha yoga, which seeks to balance the mind, body and spirit through “asanas” or poses. But each type of yoga has its own approach. Some are fast. Some are slow. Some focus on posture. Others on breath. Here are some tips to help you choose the right style for your personality and physical abilities. Mix It Up Do you like your workout to be a little different each time? Then Vinyasa Yoga is for you. This style focuses on the coordination of breath and movement. It is very active and goes well with music. Type-A Personality If you are a take-charge person who wants something that is traditional and allows you to be in control, then Ashtanga Yoga is probably your best choice. This is a physically demanding style of yoga involving synchronized breathing and a continuous series of postures. Not for beginners, this form can give you a good sweat and improve circulation, flexibility and stamina. Sweat It Out If how much you sweat during your workout gives you a feeling of accomplishment, then Power Yoga is for you. Some call power yoga “yoga with brawn.” An American interpretation of Ashtanga Yoga, this discipline combines stretching, strength training and meditative breathing, and moves through the poses without pause. Each move flows into the other and many of the poses resemble basic calisthenics. Take It Slow If you are injured or wish to ease into yoga practice with a mellow workout, Lyengar Yoga might be more your style. This form of yoga promotes strength, flexibility, endurance and balance. Poses are held a little longer than in other forms and you move slowly in between. This style also makes use of props such as cushions, blankets, straps and blocks to help those who are less flexible ease into the various poses. Commune with the Spirit If the spiritual side of yoga appeals to you, you might want to give Kundalini Yoga a try. This practice focuses on awakening the energy at the base of the spine and drawing it upward through the chakras. In addition to the poses, this form incorporates breathing, chanting and meditation.
