hat is one of the most affordable yet dramatic ways to add pizzazz to your interiors? Accessorizing. Whether you are designing a new home, hoping to sell your house or simply bored with your interior design, accessorizing adds instant appeal to any room. Even homes with the most beautiful of furnishings don’t look complete without proper accessorizing. A room without accessories is like a great outfit without any jewelry – it’s just missing that final touch!
INGREDIENTS
1.5 oz Sayori Sake (or any chilled unfiltered sake) 1.5 oz Vanilla Vodka 0.5 oz Chambord
IT’S ALL IN THE MIX
When accessorizing, be mindful of how you arrange your pieces. Accessories should always be anchored by a piece of furniture of equal or greater visual weight. So avoid placing a large vase on a small end table or hanging a small mirror over a substantial sideboard. Cluster your accessories into groupings of three or five. Odd-numbered groupings are always more visually appealing, as are groupings in varying heights and varying shapes. One piece should be dominant in each grouping.
Combine all ingredients in a tall shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain into chilled martini glass, garnish with edible orchid...Enjoy!
BUYING NEW
As you’re shopping for more accessories, consider color, scale and balance. Browse through design magazines and wander through furniture stores to gain inspiration and a sense for what appeals to you. Note your ceiling heights, wall measurements and accessory-holding surfaces. Have some ideas in mind
when you’re out shopping, but also allow yourself to contemplate items you may never have considered. Often it’s those unexpected surprises that end up adding the most interest and whimsy to your interior space.
HOT DESIGN TRENDS
1. WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT Solid neutrals, florals and stripes give way to metallics, fur (faux or real), distressed wood, textured linens, leathers and eco-friendly vinyls. 2. COLOR, COLOR EVERYWHERE Purples, golden greens, fuchsia reds, yellows, deep blues, grays, platinum, copper, dark silver, and other colorful metallics sizzle. When using color as an accent, the rule of thumb is to use it at least three times in a room (i.e. - pillow, artwork, a candle). Any less than that and you run the risk of having your “accent” seem like an “accident.”
4. PILLOWS AND RUGS Fresh, new throw pillows can turn any space from “blah” to “aahh” in moments! Think embellishments, textures, fabulous fabrics and interesting trims. Pillows in varying sizes and shapes add even more interest. Area rugs can transform a room completely. Choose from boldly patterned rugs or simple understated rugs with an eye-catching border. As far as pillows and rugs are concerned, animal prints are always a classic and can be integrated easily into contemporary, traditional and transitional décor.
3. LET THERE BE LIGHT Lighting in and of itself is an accessory. Use incandescent lighting to create a soft warm glow to your ambiance. More intense light brightens up a room and lends an energetic mood. Vary the levels of light within a room with the use of chandeliers, table or floor lamps, wall-mounted fixtures and ceiling-mounted down lights.
5. START WITH THE ART Choosing artwork doesn’t have to be intimidating. Pick what you love and build the rest of your room around it. When displaying framed art, always hang it so the middle of the piece is at eye level. If you are grouping several pieces together, design your layout like a gallery would, whether it’s prints, photos or paintings.
Showing Your Home To Sell! When you’re ready to put your home up for sale, keep in mind the most important tips for making your home “presentation ready” at any time. When potential buyers are touring homes for sale, most buyers automatically dismiss homes that are otherwise structurally sound, priced appropriately and in an excellent location, if the home is cluttered, worn or unkept. It is simply human nature. So, take care that your home stands out and looks its best. CURB APPEAL Research shows that most buyers will decide whether they like your home or not within the first 20-30 seconds. That’s just as they’re walking to the front door! First and foremost, make sure your house numbers are accessible and easy to read. Have all the exterior windows (and screens) professionally cleaned. If you can’t afford to repaint the exterior, a good power wash can help it sparkle. Does the mailbox need to be
Johannes Möller in Concert Coconino Center for the Arts, Jan. 21st 928.779.2300 | CulturalPartners.com The Swedish guitarist and composer Johannes Möller has captivated audiences throughout the world with charismatic and soulful performances. After playing his first public concerts at the age of 13, his performances now total over 500 and span Europe, Asia, South and North America. In 2010 he was awarded first prize in the GFA Concert Artist Competition, considered by many to be the most prestigious guitar competition in the world.
replaced? Does the doorbell work and sound pleasant? Keep your landscaping professionally maintained if possible. Trim bushes and trees. Power wash tire marks off of the driveway and scrub any hard water stains off of exterior surfaces such as flagstone walkways. One of the more expensive (but usually worth it) tips is to completely refinish or repaint your front door. It’s amazing the toll that the elements take on the door and there is almost nothing more inviting than a rich, glossy front door to greet potential buyers. Lastly, consider replacing or simply just polishing the front door hardware and purchase a fresh wreath and brand new door mat to top it all off. In the backyard, it is crucial to try to make it as appealing as possible. If you have children, NEVER allow toys to be strewn around the yard. Consider replacing the cushions on your outdoor furniture or at least purchasing some new accent pillows and possibly even an outdoor throw. Add candles, potted flowers and even some lifestyle magazines to outdoor
tables. Lastly, be sure to pick up any pet waste at least once a day! INTERIOR EMBELLISHMENTS The two C’s to live by are Clean and Clutter-free. First, invest in a really deep-down professional cleaning. All the way down to scrubbing the shelves in the pantry, to vacuuming the window tracks, to polishing exposed light bulbs. Have the carpets cleaned and any unpleasant or pet odors in the home eliminated. As for clutter, try to box away about 50% of what you have in the home. Take down most of the knickknacks, remove some furniture, and clean out cabinets, drawers and closets. Your goal is to make the home appear larger. The kitchen counters should be cleared of appliances. Take magnets, artwork or notes off of the refrigerator. Remove personal collections and personal photographs. It’s harder for potential buyers to picture themselves living in the home when they are constantly confronted with reminders that this is YOUR home. Let them imagine their family living there, not yours.
