Philanthropic Roots

May 2010

Working for a company rooted in philanthropy continuously reminds me of perspective. With over $300,000 donated to numerous community charity partners, our unique platform of consistent philanthropic donations supports our community through each real estate endeavor. Each of my successful real estate transactions results in a donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital or a worthwhile Arizona charity of your choice that benefits those far less fortunate than you and I. If you are considering selling over the next few years, call me and we can discuss maximizing your interests well ahead of time. If you know someone who might like to obtain the Paradise Valley lifestyle for today’s new prices, please have them call me. If you want some additional information on the fine charities you see highlighted in each issue – call me and I’ll never even ask you about buying or selling real estate!

Brief Market Data for Paradise Valley (Inclusive of non-gated areas as well)

• The median home price of Paradise Valley homes is $1.315M versus $1.300M last month, $1.350M last quarter, $1.650M last year and $1.975M two years ago. • The average home in Paradise Valley sold for 89% of list price last month, last quarter and last year. • The price per square foot for all listed Paradise Valley homes is $460.95. The price per square foot for the 28 properties currently in escrow is $274.83. • The sales per month in Paradise Valley have averaged 28 homes for the last three months. The average for the last two years was 19 homes per month. (This stat is staying up.) • The number of Paradise Valley homes listed for sale has held steady for six months now. (Once again this stat is better than if listings were increasing.) After looking at the statistics above it’s natural to feel disappointed. But as much as we may pine for the values of 2004-2008, our desires don’t affect value. “Perception is not what is, … it’s what man thinks is.” In our market today, the perception of home values has changed. As much as we don’t embrace this change, we must remember that values are what the market will bear. If you are curious about concrete quantifiable information with which to make your individual informed real estate decisions, you will not find a more interesting statistical analysis than I can provide. One particular set of data I compile will empower you with some simple knowledge you will not find elsewhere. Call me at your convenience.

& Quench the Need! Next time you raise a bottle of water to drink, think about GIVING some water to the deserving and responsible St. Mary’s Food Bank. Water bottles seem to be everywhere…except where it’s needed most! Summer is coming and water for the poor and homeless is a critical necessity in Arizona. There is never enough, and dehydration is the number-one cause of deaths for the homeless during the coming months. St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the world’s first food bank, is a cornerstone distributor for food, water and services to Arizona’s 13 of 15 counties. They are committed to improving the quality of life for Arizonans in Homeowners Financial Group, need. For over annual “Water for Life” Program five decades, it has tackled many challenges through the vision of founder John Van Hengel. Keeping pace with the growing need in our poor economic climate is a daily challenge. There are simple ways to contribute JUST WATER to St. Mary’s Food Bank that we can do as individuals, schools, businesses, associations, clubs and groups to assist our underserved fellow Arizona children and families. We are willing and able to create interesting and fun ways to contribute to summer water drives. Once you get your water donation, fill those truck beds and backseats and take them down to St. Mary’s Food distribution center at 35th Avenue and Thomas. They will weigh your water donation and give you a receipt for the pounds you’ve contributed. You donation could mean preserving a life.

TIPS TO DONATE WATER: • Challenge your office members to bring in a pack of water and match it! • Collect spare change in the house and encourage kids to turn it into a case of water to donate. • Create a mini water drive: Post neighborhood signs, and meet at a local park on Saturday to collect. • Neighborhood Water Stands! Have it be the new lemonade volunteer project for kids. Collect change or water cases to donate. • Ask a local store to donate some water cases to St. Mary’s – they will receive a receipt. • Classroom Project: Stack donated water in front of the class as a reminder of the competition and organize a donation day down to St. Mary’s. • Host a family “Water-Q.” Grill outside and invite guests to bring a pack of water to contribute.

Hundreds of bowties, thousands of children, and Arizona’s leader in pediatric care. This paints a picture of a world-class community hero, Dr. Jeffrey Buchhalter MD, PHD at Phoenix Children’s Hospital who has pioneered ways to diagnose, treat, and cure epilepsy in children. He is the director of the PEMU (Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit) at the Children’s Neuroscience Institute and is a pediatric epileptologist.

A character in his own right, with his signature Harry Potter glasses and colorful bowties – which kids really love! – make Dr. Buchhalter a welcome

sight for anxious parents, family members and children who deal with epilepsy. Caring Dr. Buchhalter explains to his patients, “Epilepsy is like a storm in your brain.” Once the storm and its frequency of occurrence are properly identified, a number of treatment options can be utilized. Buchhalter’s career highlights read like a Who’s Who in world-renowned pediatric medicine. He’s taught at Harvard and University of Pennsylvania Medical Schools, as well as directing and co-directing epilepsy programs at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Oregon Health Sciences University, and most recently, The Mayo Clinic, Rochester. Dr. Buchhalter opened the epilepsy program at PCH in 2006, the first of its kind in Arizona. Dr. Buchhalter’s research funding comes from the National Institutes of Health. He is currently working in collaboration with Columbia University to understand what components of epilepsy are inherited. He also reaches out to local neurogeomics divisions at the Translational

Geomics Research Institute. He’s quick to give credit. “You can buy all the technology you want, but you can’t buy the kind of personal dedication you find at all levels within Phoenix Children’s; from the nursing staff to the administrative executives, to the physicians. It made it an easy choice to come here and build the kind of programs Arizona deserves,” says Buchhalter. It takes a village. CHOOSE TO GIVE

DAN WILLIAMS, PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER THE WILLIAMS REAL ESTATE COMPANY What if we all received a “give check,” instead of the almighty paycheck? As summer approaches, many of us are thinking about how much we want to go on vacation, hit the beaches, play in the sun and take ourselves far away from the hectic life we call “work.” Let’s think about others who would change places with us in a minute to have our “hectic life,” but their options are limited. There’s not one person on the planet who has not been affected by, or knows someone who’s been affected by, the economic uncertainty. That’s precisely why our Arizona-based real estate company and our associates all gravitate to a clear mission of “growing our community… one home at a time.” In simple terms, every time there is cause to celebrate by selling, buying or successfully completing a residential or commercial

real estate transaction; our company, its agents and all who surround our dedicated mission know the common thread. A paycheck becomes a “give check.”

WORK TO GIVE Funny, it isn’t work to some. Many fortunate individuals today have the luxury and ability to work, to bring home a paycheck and earn a living. Yet, we get caught up in our own world, and may not be focused on the many daunting issues facing our communities. It’s all of our responsibility to create awareness and take action. Just look around your area. Vibrant businesses have closed; men and women who had exhilarating dreams about their futures may be facing changes that they never dreamed would happen to them. Yet, we can change all of that. It’s a choice. It’s your choice.

Like going to the grocery store, El Charro, a ballgame or the beach, life is full of choices. Giving should be one of those choices we fit into our daily regime which takes on a life of its own. Our children and young adults are eager to learn and do. Therein lies an enormous pool of talented “givers”! There are so many ways to give, and they are not all monetary. This big wonderful world revolves around yin & yang, giving & receiving, action & reaction. Here are a few simple ways to make giving… your choice: • Give of your time. It’s the most important part of any giving – human caring and interaction. • Give of your expertise. Specialty? Professional? Turn your years of knowledge into years of giving. • Give of your influence. Consummate networker? Share your gift of influence to make giving connections. • Give of yourself. You have a special gift. Pass it forward to the many deserving charities that need you.

We can give to our chosen philanthropic causes in one of three ways. We can give money, we can give time or we can give our influence. Here is an opportunity to use your influence to gain exposure for the cause that you are passionate about. In each issue I highlight three worthwhile local charities. Simply call or email and I can include an article about the worthy cause you want to see garner more attention. You can help write the piece or put us in touch with the appropriate person and we will write it for you. As usual, I won’t even ask you about buying or selling real estate.
