Will Desert Hot Springs Go Fresh And Easy?
3
BY LESLIE ANDREWS DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CAA new chain of upper-end grocery stores has hit the Coachella Valley and Desert Hot Springs may be getting a piece of its franchise. On Tuesday, the city’s Planning Commission voted 3-0 to approve construction permits for the Fresh and Easy company, which plans to build a store at the corner of Hacienda Avenue and Palm Drive, where the former Freestyle Furniture building stands.
Fresh and Easy, an El Segundo-based grocery store chain, has created 2,000 new jobs within the past year expanding throughout Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. Will Desert Hot Springs bask in the company’s glory soon? “I think this is a beautiful project,” said Planning Commissioner Gabriel King. The store will be 13,929 square feet large and have 68 parking spaces available. It will stretch from Hacienda
Avenue to Granada Avenue, as the empty lots have been purchased for that reason. The project includes occupying seven lots. Once constructed, about 10% of the building will be devoted to selling beer and wine. City staff suggested that the hours of alcohol sales be restricted to 9 AM to midnight, as the store generally opens at 6 AM. The designs for the exterior of the store will be contemporary, beige in color,
with landscape. The old furniture store building will be demolished, to make way for the Fresh and Easy store to be built. If approved by the City Council, the building will start construction by June 29th and will be completed for opening in 24 weeks. The nearby cities of Cathedral City, Yucca Valley, Palm Springs and Coachella all have plans to open a Fresh and Easy Market in the near future.

29 Positions
May Be Axed From Palm Springs Unified School District BY LESLIE ANDREWS PALM SPRINGS, CAOfficials from the Palm Springs Unified School District have tried to spare as many jobs as possible due to budget cuts from the state. Tuesday, the district board voted to cut no more than 24 teaching positions and five pre-school positions for the upcoming school year. Board Member Justin Blake commented, “This cabinet has been in lockdown for several days. They’ve
done an impressive amount of work. This group is to be commended.” The Desert Sun reported previously that 165 positions would be axed for the following 2009-2010 year. Through vigorous cuts in social and educational programs, the district was able to save 131 positions. “There will be a lot of program cuts, but we will still benefit a lot of students,” said Board President Gary Jeandron. He also believes that perhaps fewer than 29 positions may be cut after all.
Desert Sands Unified School District in La Quinta and Coachella Valley Unified School District in Thermal are also facing large numbers of teacher cuts, as a result of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s massive cuts to education as a result of the statewide deficit. Teachers will know by March 15th whether or not they will have a job. Seniority will most likely play a factor in determination.

PALM SPRINGS EIGHTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NATIVE FILM & CULTURE
Eighth Annual Festival of Native Film & Culture STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAT KRAUSE PALM SPRINGS, CAThe Eighth Annual Festival of Native Film & Culture was held at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs, Calif. It ran from Wed., March 4, through Sun., March 8. Long and short films from all sectors of Native American culture were shown. The final night’s film was ‘Older than America.’ It was a very emotional, gripping and enlightening story about how American Indian children were forcibly taken from their parents at an early age and forced to attend boarding schools. Many children suffered irreparable damage from emotional and physical abuse. It was mandatory in many states for Native American children to attend a boarding school
until 1975. The film is about a boarding school in Minnesota, where many atrocities occurred. People involved went to extreme measures to cover up all those crimes after the school was finally closed. They saw haunting visions of cultural genocide to bring this to light. This is truly powerful story that must be told. After the film there, was a question and answer session. Some of the questions asked were pertinent to the story. One audience member asked the actors if any of them had spent time in a boarding school and if the film brought back memories. One actor told of how he was taken from his family as a child. He spent his childhood in three different boarding schools in three different states. He kept running
away from each of them and finally succeeded in returning to his home after 11 years. He told of beatings and other punishments children endured. Others said they still carry scars from their experiences in boarding school and being taken from their parents as small children. Members of the cast said this film is supposed to enlighten all sectors that these things did occur. The story can help heal the tribes from past injustice. Shawn Milanovich mentioned there were stories of boarding schools in Palm Springs, known as the Americanization Little Red School. The Show at Agua Caliente Welcomes, ‘The Best Singer in the Business.’ STORY BY LISA ROBYN LAWRENCE PHOTOS BY ALLEN LAWRENCE AND MARLENE ALEXANDER Friday, March 6, 2009, was the night of a landmark event in the Coachella Valley. Tony Bennett took the stage at ‘The Show’ at Agua Caliente Casino-Resort-Spa. BennettÕs performed internationally for 60 years. It was 60 years ago, in 1949, that Bennett, using the stage name ‘Joe Bari,’ opened for Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village and was the only white act in her show. Bob Hope attended that performance and went back stage wanting to greet Baily and meet Bennett. Hope said to Bennett, ‘I know that’s not your real name,’ (and said he didn’t like how it sounded). Bennett told him his full name was Anthony Dominick Benedetto. Hope announced, ‘Well from now on, you will be known as ‘Tony Bennett’,’ and so the adventure began. A little known fact to the fans of Bennett’s music is that for an equal number of years, Bennett has been an accomplished painter. He uses his given name of Anthony Benedetto. Benedetto’s paintings hang in museums and galleries worldwide. There is even a Benedetto titled “Central Park” now hanging in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s permanent collection. Certainly I could argue that there are many great contemporary singers, but after Friday night’s performance, at least in my eyes and those of the almost two thousand who attended the concert, there is no need for further discussion. Bennett personifies class, personality, charisma and smooth vocal talent. If he wasn’t before, he is now one of my alltime favorite singers. The evening’s show opened
with Bennett’s daughter, Antonia Bennett, singing her heart out to the audience with Tony’s quartet. Antonia clearly demonstrated that she inherited her father’s jazzy vocal talent and stage grace. With a clear voice and beauty like an angel she demonstrated her own unique quality. Antonia’s opening act kicked off the evening’s excitement, but when ‘Tony’ walked out on the stage, the energy went from high to hyper-drive. It is almost impossible to describe the level of electricity, appreciation and adoration Bennett drew as he walked out on stage. People stood, shouted and cheered, ‘Tony, Tony, Tony,’ his name seemed to fill the beautiful showroom. The energy was beyond electric. The auditorium fell into a palpable silence. During the performance, Bennett took the time to acknowledge someone very special in the audience, who, among his numerous media credits, is a major writer, producer and actor. Bennett credits Frank Military as also being the ‘keeper of the Great American Songbook.’ Then in true Bennett fashion, he went into his jazzy arrangement of the Jules ‘Julie’ Stein song, ‘Just in Time.’ Some singers perform only a few songs and their act is finished in 45 minutes. This was definitely not the case. ‘Tony’ stayed through countless standing ovations and ‘bravos’ (more than five) and gave the audience his all for more than 90 minutes of songs and music. The audience was spellbound with Bennett’s dazzling performance. No matter what Bennett did, it was evident that the audience
loved it, and the more they appreciated him, the more he gave to them. After a while this symbiotic relationship blended to where it was hard to tell where the audience’s appreciation ended and Bennett’s ‘giving’ began. We stood, cheered and applauded his excellence. Again and again, the audience stood and applauded. Bennett graciously smiled, bowed or clasped his hands in front of him, saluting the audience for their love and appreciation. When Bennett began singing his signature song, ‘ I Left My Heart in San Francisco,’ there was an audible sigh and thunderous applause and yet another standing ovation at the song’s end. I’ve seen many great performers in my life. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet many of the great entertainers in my role as writer. But without question, meeting Tony Bennett after the show was one of my greatest experiences. Bennett is as gracious and warm off the stage as he is onstage. He smiled and shook my hand as if I was one of the most important people in the world, and for that moment I guess I was, since I was a member of his audience and clearly Tony cares about the people for whom he sings. Bennett said several times during his performance that the people who have come to see him in the past and present are the most important people in his life. I would add one more piece to this equation what was clear to me in watching the performance was that his musicians are his family as well. I am told that Bennett regards his band as being of
equal importance to him and his show. I could see this deference and respect for each musician’s skill and talent as Bennett, time after time, gave credit to each artist for their exceptional musical talent in so many of the songs performed this night. There were many unbelievable ‘zinging hot’ guitar riffs from Gray Sargent, ‘sizzling piano scat’ solos from music director, Lee Musiker, then there was Jim Hughart who provided some of the ‘swingingist’ and amazing bass fiddle pizzicato. Last but not least was Count Basie’s favorite drummer, Harold Jones, providing the most ‘outrageously cool’ drum riffs that really ‘smoked!’ The audience exploded into applause with each musical treat. Tony demonstrated that he still has the ‘stuff,’ to belt out ‘high octane’ notes at the end of several songs and go on strong onto the next great song. A quote from Tony Bennett’s art Web site www.benedettoarts. com says it so succinctly, ‘He’s the premier interpreter of the Great American songbook, a 15-time Grammy winner and a Kennedy Center honoree, among countless other achievements. When performing, he connects to people everywhere through the timeless appeal of his music.’ The only thing I would add is that Tony Bennett is eternally young and is the quintessential example of a true ‘young at heart’ attitude at the tender age of 82, an inspiration to everyone. Gilda’s Club Desert Cities and Spotlight 29 Casino Present The Comedy of Rita Rudner ENTERTAINMENT
R
ita Rudner, of ‘Saturday Night Live’ fame, was the headline act for the 2009 Gilda’s Club Desert Cities annual gala event. Rudner broke into the comedy scene in the early 1980s, coming from a career as a dancer on Broadway. Rudner has honed her own ‘epigrammatic’ style of comedic timing, using run-on statements and poignant descriptions. The two most influential comedy personalities in Rudner’s early decision to transition ‘from chorus line to punch line’ were Jack Benny and Woody Allen. What a treat to see a comedy act that was without obscene language that made the audience laugh heartily out loud. Rudner used her trademark quick talk and wacky wit to tickle and almost dare the audience into laughing. Rudner really had the audience going. At one point it was women versus men in regard to shopping. ’You see, men don’t get it,’ she explained. ‘Women see shopping as the ultimate ‘hunt,’ men grow weary and bored unless it is to shop for something large like a big screen TV to watch sports events on.’ Men like to hunt only big game I guess. And in regard to shopping sales, women see sale items as a chance to ‘save’ money ‘Look at how much I saved with this new purse.’ Men see it as, ‘how much did you spend?’ The hilarity of her honest, incisive humor had the audience chuckling and laughing throughout her entire act. Rudner took pot shots at GPS systems, the fact that men hate waiting for us to get ready to go out, yet they will spend the better part of a day fishing waiting for a fish. There were loud cheers and applause for Rudner as she concluded. Rudner has a newly released book titled, ‘I Still Have It’ I Just Can’t Remember Where I Put It: Confessions of a Fiftysomething,’ and a new DVD titled, ‘Rita Rudner: Live from Las Vegas,’ because she is alive and really lives in Las Vegas. Don’t miss Rudner’s upcoming PBS special on KVCR, 8 p.m., June 2, 2009. For more on this event including

Home Inspection Helps Ensure Dream Deals Don’t Turn into Nightmares
(ARA) - You found your dream deal on a foreclosed home, but will that great price tag come with a different kind of higher cost? Buying a repossessed property, short sale or a home offered at a bargain price -- because of its condition -- can mean you’re assuming much higher risks. Repossessed and short sale homes are often abandoned and neglected, leaving them with much more potential for unforeseen structural defects, plumbing, electrical, heating systems, environmental issues and many other problems. Fixing these woes can cost far more than the financial savings from a distressed property purchase. There also may be unknown defects, such as mold or radon, that could affect your family’s health and safety. Still, it is possible to
get a dream deal on a distressed home. Before you sign on the dotted line, be sure to have the house thoroughly inspected by a professional, so you can reduce these potential risks as well as financial costs. A home inspector can help you identify potential problems in the home you’re considering buying, so you know in advance what you’re getting into -- and what you should walk away from. There are many ways to find a home inspector, including consulting family, friends, your attorney, real estate professional or mortgage professional. You can also find information on inspectors across the country on www.ashi. org, the Web site of The American Society of Home Inspectors, the organization that sets the standards of practice for the inspection industry.
Homebuyers aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a home inspection. If you’re selling your home, having it inspected before you list it may help sell your home in less time and for more money. Moreover, homeowners can benefit from maintenance inspections, such as an energy inspection, which can help reduce monthly energy costs, and a home safety inspection that can help seniors stay in their homes longer. If you’re thinking of hiring a home inspector, ASHI offers a few tips on how to evaluate candidates: * Visit the “Find a Home Inspector” section of ASHI’s Web site to find a qualified ASHI inspector in your area. Many inspectors also list their specialties and other background information, such as their experience, on this site. * Ask the inspector how
he operates. What format will the report be in? Ask for sample reports. * Talk with each candidate to see who is the best fit for your needs and comfort, as well as for the property being inspected. * Check all references. Don’t automatically go with the lowest price. Remember, the old adage is often true -- you get what you pay for. * Attend the inspection to ensure you get the best value -- and most information -- for your investment. A home inspector can be your best ally in ensuring your dream deal doesn’t turn into a nightmare. Visit www.ashi. org and take the Virtual Home Inspector Tour to see and hear more about home inspections. Courtesy of ARAcontent

A Night With the
Playboy Playmates
STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAT KRAUSE Fantasy Springs Resort Hotel & Casino held its fun night with the Playboy Playmates again. This years February and March centerfolds were brought in for autographing Playboy magazines on Sat., March 7 at 8 p.m. Media were allowed to photograph and interview the women prior to their stint in the casino. Most everyone in the Velvet Palm room had questions for the Playmates and wanted to have their photo taken with both of them. They signed the magazine for special guests with passes to the VIP lounge on the 12th floor. At about 8 p.m., the crowds started gathering on the casino floor. They all wanted to be one of the first in line to meet the Playmates, get autographs,
Jessica Burciaga and Jennifer Pershing ~photo Pat Krause
talk with them and get a photo if possible. Both men and women were in line. I talked to one lady who wanted to get a photo of her husband with the beautiful women. She brought her camera and her cell phone for a photo. She wanted to be able to send out the photo on her cell phone right away to family. Once the Playmates got on the stage at 9 p.m., the excitement grew. Crowds got larger as some guests who had not heard about this event showed up. They wanted to know what was going on and then would rush to get in line. It was very well run, so each person got a couple minutes with the women and then the next person would come up on the platform. It went very smoothly
and everyone seemed very happy with their free autographed magazine. They would go off to friends in the crowd to show off their new prized possession. The line continued until the playmates left at 11 p.m. This is a special event put on by Fantasy Springs Casino a couple times a year. It has become a favorite of casino patrons. February’s Playmate is Jessica Burciaga from Santa Fe Springs, Calif., She is 25 years old. March Playmate is Jennifer Pershing from Somers Point, N.J. and she is 28 years old. INDIO PERFORMING ARTS CENTER
Patricia Welch: A Singing Legend Settles In The Desert Up-coming show at the Indio Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m. BY LESLIE ANDREWS INDIO, CAAnother star has arrived to shine brightly in the Coachella Valley. Patricia Welch, a Broadway musical and opera singer comes to town after nearly a lifetime of singing with some of the largest stars in the world. Desert Local News sits down with the diva herself, who has a four-octave range. “I have 4 different voices and when I sing Patsy Cline’s Crazy, I change my voice like a chameleon changes its colors,” Welch said. Just about every kind of popular music Welch has sung. From country/western to opera, she’s done it all. And, she has been singing since she was a teenager. She further explains, “I started off very young in my teens and did the national tour and on Broadway. Tuptim was my character in the King and I.” Originally from Steubenville, Ohio, she attended West Virginia University where she majored in music. Welch
was trained classically with former Metropolitan Opera star Francis Yeend. Some of her many musical theater roles include Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Marsinah in “Kismet,” Hodel in “Fiddler On The Roof,” and also played Maria in “West Side Story.” One of her crowning achievements was working onstage with the late Yul Brinner. Welch also has been seen at NASCAR events singing the National Anthem. In recent years, she has also worked on films involving Sharon Stone, Calista Flockhart and Britney Spears doing singing roles. Plus, she has sung with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras throughout Southern California in concerts, at least 200 times. Welch lived in the Las Vegas area for seven years, where she was able to work with Wayne Newton and Robert Goulet. “I co-starred with Robert Goulet on a PBS special and I did two solos in Wayne Newton’s show,” she says.
But why did she come to the Coachella Valley? Family, of course. She states, “My husband has five grown children that live in the desert and that’s what brought us here.” Her husband Pete DuBarry also is involved in music as well. During the attacks on September 11, 2001, they both wrote a song called “United We’ll Stand” for the memorial. “It was very well received. People will know who I am fast out here,” she says. And now, she’s coming to the Indio Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m. This will be her first debut performance in the Valley. Plus, through her website, Welch is available to perform for private parties. “I have a 7 piece band and a 15 piece band. Whatever fits their budget and level, I can produce it.”

Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa
Archbishop Desmond Tutu speaks at Desert Town Hall
STORY AND PHOTOS BY PAT KRAUSE Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the third speaker in this year’s Desert Town Hall series. He spoke on Wed., March 4, at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in the Emerald Ballroom. Actor Lou Gossett Jr. introduced Tutu. Gossett said he was thrilled and honored to be asked to introduce him to the audience. Tutu is a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He was born in South Africa under the apartheid regime. His dad was a teacher and his mother a domestic worker. Tutu was a teacher for three years and before entering the Anglican ministry. He was ordained in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1961. Tutu spoke of Africa, his homeland. He made reference to the unspeakable acts and atrocities committed in Africa.
LOU GOSSETT JR. AND ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU
Power-hungry tyrants take money and have secret accounts in Switzerland. He mentioned the fact that infant mortality is high and life expectancy is worse now in Africa. There is hope, as there is a reawakening and rebirth happening in Africa. Many more free elections are being held. Africa is rising out of the ashes of ethnic cleansing and warring tribes. Hopefully, he said, all this is coming to an end. Tutu said he would have to look far and wide to find a more generous country than the United States. He also made reference to some of our leaders, such as John Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan who helped to form and shape our country. He said that America is the
leader in the world in generosity. As an example, he mentioned that after World War II, Europe got on its feet faster because of help from the U.S. These are lessons to be learned. Tutu said he was very pleased about our new president, Barack Obama, knowing that he is part African. He said he watched a sea of people of all ages, sizes, colors and shapes when the new president was sworn in. People of color now have a new spring in their step, and the world has new hope for a better future. For more photos of this event and photos by Pat Krause, go to www. desertcitiespeople.com.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND AND THE DOOBIE BROTHERS, LIVE IN CONCERT, SATURDAY, MAY 23RD BY STAFF INDIO, CA – Two of rock music’s most renowned and respected bands will share the same stage for one evening of great music when THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND and THE DOOBIE BROTHERS perform at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casinos Special Events Center, Saturday, May 23rd at 8pm. Known as “the band” that opened the door for other Southern rock groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Marshall Tucker Band, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND have remained true to their roots. Since their beginnings in the late 60’s, founding member, GREGG ALLMAN created a style of improvisational “jamming” that fuses blues, jazz, R&B and rock. Their biggest selling hits include “Dreams”, “Whipping Post”, “Midnight Rider”, “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica.” They joined an elite group of musicians who were inducted into the Rock N’ Roll
Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the band at #52 of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. 2009 marks THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND’s 40th anniversary as a recording act. Visit them online at www.allmanbrothersband.com Celebrating 4 decades of “brotherhood” this year, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS continue to be as vital musically as they have ever been. Originally formed in San Jose, CA in the late 60’s by singer/guitarist Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS began a rigorous touring and recording schedule that would in time, produce hits like “Listen to the Music”, “China Grove”, “Black Water” and “Takin’ It to the Streets.” With a musical style that resists any labels, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS have sold over 22 million albums worldwide and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in

What should be my primary objective on every swing?

Square and Centered Contact.
The essence of good golf is distance control, and the key to distance control is a consistent quality of contact; a consistent transfer of energy to the ball. Since ideal contact is square and centered, your primary goal on every swing should be square and centered contact. Contact made in the center of a clubface that’s square to the target. DESERT LOCAL NEWS • MARCH 12, 2009
2009 will be challenging for the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs area business owners to come up with new and cost-effective advertisement solutions. Conventional print, Cable TV and Radio advertisement is expensive and takes special production steps. Many small businesses still do not have web sites, which precludes them from presenting timely and detailed content in the natural search results on major search engines (SEO). Desert Local News *Virtual Paper solves this problem by enabling these businesses to automatically convert any print-ready marketing materials (ads, flyers, brochures, catalogs, newsletters and more) into search engine optimized web pages. Consumers find when they conduct searches for local businesses on their favorite search engines and insert them into the regular weekly virtual newsmagazine edition. (Published every Wednesday evening) Desert Local News is making this new service available to the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs area businesses to provide them an added powerful way to reach potential customers via the Internet without great costs. Local City Governments and Non-profit Organizations can post important notices anytime. For example, a spa resort, or restaurant will be able to seamlessly post a brochure or menu on the Internet, making it search engine friendly, providing enhanced ranking, increased traffic, and tangible return on their investment. Ads, and newsletters can be published by Desert Local News virtual edition and directly emailed to their customers, as well as, to the readers of the newspaper for a fraction of the cost. Thousands of people will be reached locally, regionally and worldwide. This will be particular valuable for the tourist trade, like the Spas, Casinos and Resort Hotels.
Special 4 Page Flyer insert $75 per issue *Desert Local News started its Virtual paper in 2007, and is now a weekly 32-page full color newsmagazine. With a simple click, you can browse (zoom) through the virtual publication in 3D turning page animation as if you had our regular print newspaper in front of you. The publication is alive and interactive, including clickable ads (links back to customer web site and directly e-mail from ads.) You can flip through the pages, search for information or articles. You can print your
newspaper on the fly, or send it with a click via the e-mail button to your customers, friends and family anywhere in the world. In Germany, the Virtual Newspaper has taken off like a storm. The world’s first virtual paper, the AvaStar was launched in early 2007. The world’s oldest newspaper in Sweden went paperless not long afterward. Across the country, a few cities and companies have virtual e-newspapers. For the Coachella Valley, Desert Local News
